Owner description: Currently closed for major renovations and re-opens October 2017. The Bass is Miami Beach’s contemporary art museum. Recognized for organizing the first solo museum exhibitions in the United States of international artists such as Erwin Wurm, The Bass also presents major exhibitions by influential artists, such as El Anatsui, Isaac Julien, Eve Sussman and Piotr Uklański. The exhibition program encompasses a wide range of media and artistic points of view that bring new thought to the diverse cultural context of Miami Beach. The Bass Museum of Art was founded in 1964 by the City of Miami Beach after the donation of the private collection by John and Johanna Bass. The museum opened in what was formerly the Miami Beach Public Library and Art Center, a 1930s Art Deco building designed by Russell Pancoast, which already had a rich history on Miami Beach as the first public exhibition space for art in South Florida. In 2001, the museum conducted its first major renovation designed by Tokyo-based architect Arata Isozaki, adding a new wing and second level to house a total of 16,000 square feet of exhibition space. Went on a half price day. Good thing because not worth full admission price. Other than the Egyptian section and the room with the giant tapestry there was not much there. An entire room on Madonna and child was a bit much. You will need only an hour or so to see everything.Apparently on certain Fridays they have live music, wine and beer. Might be worth checking out

If you're in Miami you'll say, "too far to drive" Hope not, because the look of the place, and the overall experience is right up there with any museum of its size. Staff are uniformly pleasant and kind. Gift shop is skimpy, but then again, maybe that's a good thing these days. Overall sure worth the visit. Their webiste is solid, tells you all you need to know.

We had our wedding reception at the Bass this past December. The director of events, Denise, was very easy to work with, prompt, and helpful. The museum is uniquely designed & we are so happy we chose to celebrate our special day there.

I have always enjoyed this museum. Lots of opening receptions for temporary exhibits I pay little mind to instead heading for the same old ones when I get there. I like this place almost as much as the permanant collections at Lowe.

This small but packed museum has some wonderful specimens of baroque art (much of it Christian iconography) and a great Egyptian room. Some contemporary things mingled throughout. Not a tremendous museum but a good respite of culture from the relentless sunshine. You could spend a good 90 minutes or more. Interesting information on art provenance displayed alongside.
