Viscay Hotel
Ranked #131 of 212 Hotels in Miami Beach
Reviewed May 8, 2006

A friend and I stayed at the Viscay for two nights (room #4) in a room w/ kitchenette from Apr 29-May 1/06. This was our first time in South Beach and we picked this hotel because of the location and price. The location was perfect - right on Collins in the middle of all the action, steps from the beach, restaurants, and nightlife. Although I haven't stayed anywhere else in South Beach, the hotel itself seemed very old and although our room and the hallways were very clean, the floors were creaky, we could hear people walking in the room above us, there wasn't much sunlight in our room (from the window we could only see the alley between our hotel and the building nextdoor), the room had an odd but tolerable smell, the furniture was old and cheap looking and the couch was stained, and our bathroom lacked a shower head. One positive was the bed - a very comfortable Queen - and I was happy that the bathroom was clean and we were given plenty of fresh towels each day. If you are looking for a classy place with a nice looking room, this place is probably not for you. If you won't be spending much time in the room and all you are really concerned about is location, price, and basic cleanliness, the Viscay is an ok option. There is no parking, pool or elevator at this hotel and the front desk guy (I think he is the manager/owner as well) was kinda rude and unfriendly.

Our party of 9 arrived at 10:30 pm Friday the 21st of April. We booked a cruise from Miami 4 months earlier and wanted to go in a day early to see Miami. Actually, this website is what led us to book the Viscay Hotel even after a couple of bad ratings. Anyway, my brother called 4 months ago to reserve our 4 rooms for 2 nights, you can't make reservations online. The guy took our reservation, my brothers Amex number, and said there was no confirmation number just his name, Peter. When we showed up, he looked puzzled, said my brother had called back to cancel the booking, why in world would 9 of us show up that late with 15 bags if we'd cancelled our reservation. We figured the guy was nuts, anyway, he happened to have 4 rooms so we stayed. When we checked out of the hotel 3 days later (with no sleep from the noise, and showering in dirty bathrooms), the man picked a verbal fight with us saying he remembered my brother calling back and cancelling the reservation. We simply showed up to get a lower rate than what he was charging that week. CRAZY! Anyway, I would recommed everyone stay away from this hotel!!! Other then that, South Beach was great, wonderful food and beachs and all of the other people we met were nice.

We wanted to stayed one night on South Beach before a cruise. I was looking for a bargin price since we planned to be on the beach as much as possible. We were very pleased with the Viscay. Great location and the owner was very helpful in every way! Very clean hotel and not much street noise. Just two short blocks to beach and all the street front resturants and a drug store just a block behind for bottled water and sunscreen. I thought the hotel was very quaint and historical, the art deco district is very pretty. Thanks to the owner for a great stay in Miami!

The Viscay was an ok hotel, it did help me understand art deco. Art deco is the word people use to describe the run down buildings all over south beach. When the paint starts to peel off your house and the neighborhood association starts to complain, tell them you are going for an art deco look, it will save tons of money in renovation. The room was small and somewhat dingy looking. The cleaning staff did a nice job with what they had to work with. The bathroom was a mess, the sink, toilet, and shower were all small. I am average size 5' 9" 180 and felt cramped good luck to those who are larger.

The hotel is close to all the action which allowed us to be in the hotel as little as possible. South Beach is a great beach experience, but the nightlife leaves much to be desired. The popular stops are crowed and have long lines, the other clubs use gimmicks to get you in only to find them empty.

Good luck on your trip to Miami, it can easily be a memorable vacation or a comedy of errors, so be wise in your decisions.

We stayed at the Viscay last May 29- June 11. Our experience with the hotel was good. We have nothing to complain about. Location was perfect, service was great and the room itself was very clean and spacious. We arrived on Memorial Day weekend so the area around the hotel was quite packed and noisy...right after the holiday was over we were able to fully enjoy the convenience of being right in the heart of South Beach. Peter, the owner/manager, was helpful and very nice to us. The housekeeper was so gracious and kind as well. We would definitely reccomend this hotel to those interested in staying in the middle of SoBe.
