“Penguin Hotel - Good Stay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 23, 2013

Penquin Hotel is in a great location on Ocean Drive. Slightly quieter end.

Hotel is basic but has character. Server Carlos was excellent. Michael and Martha at the front desk were good.

Potential improvements: more lighting in the halls, with new carpet and brighter paint would cheer things up there. Rooms though are bright.

We would stay there again.

Room Tip: Ocean drive can be noisy with trash collection, thin walls etc. Not much you can do about it but hav...

We had never been to SOBE before. The location of the Penguin has many advantages: across from beach at Lumus Park, short walk to many fine restaurants, art deco center, and lots of beautiful people watching. The price is quite reasonable for the location. Restaurant staff and front desk are top notch, with genuine warmth that make me want to return again. The room had several issues: very old thin sheets, SQUEECKY lumpy mattress, no coffee machine in room, ( to get cont breakfast coffee, you must walk 2 blocks to sister hotel), room was not cleaned until after 4pm each day (we like to relax in room in late afternoon), no heat in room ( it got in the 50s two days, but housekeeping did give us a portable heater that worked), there is no chair. General property issues: no soda/water vending machine on property, things are a bit run down (but for the price OK), the daily $17/pp resort fee gives you - beach towels (they give you as many as you need), a tiny bottled water, access to rusty folding camp chairs to carry to the beach, happy hour drink ( provided with a smile by bartender ), continental breakfast two blocks away. Overall our south beach experience was very good, and we will probably return to the Penguin for the location, and it was great staying in an art deco building. Do not stay here if you need all the normal amenities of a chain hotel. If you don't mind a slightly quirky hotel in a great location, this might be for you.

Room Tip: Oceanfront rooms have beautiful view. Windows do not really open. Top floor was pretty quiet.

My friend and I vacation in South Miami our favorite place and regardless of the problems we continue to book here because of the extremely wonderful staff (i.e.: Laurence/restaurant Mgr and her team are just wonderful, warm and very hospitable ...what every hotel wishes/strives for they have it trust me. The front desk staff are all wonderful and always helpful.

The negatives for the GM to improve because we care...
- The bed was very old, only springs and sore back every night. Was told beds were all now changed but ours was a old one.
- I asked to fix my tub handle and eng. never came regardless of my many requests to soak in a tub it never happened so bath experience was poor.
- The female girl who works the buffet breakfast 2 days a week at the President/Sister Hotel should be removed and retrained due to lack of customer service/approach and lack of the english language. Stayed here for 11 nights and I forgot to bring my comp breakfast receipt AFTER my 6th daily breakfast visit and tried to explain but instead of telling me to please just stop by the front desk and get another receipt, she said to me "You do not understand, GO! Meaning leave! I complained to the Manager as I am a hotel training consultant and was speechless they would put someone with your valued guest to be treated so poorly unlike the rest of the hotel staff.
- Hskg needs to clean all guest rooms by 3-4pm at the latest. We had to call every day to ask
for maid service as our room was never serviced until after 5pm. Far too late.
- The Do Not Disturb Hanging Door sign is inexpensive which is fine but the hole is so large they
always fall on the floor and I see all guests having to bend down and pick it up and rehang them and this little detail is trouble some and can could be resolved for guest comfort by ordering a
hanging door sign with a much smaller hole.

The positives...
- WONDERFUL staff you will find of all hotels on the strip!
- Excellent, BEST location of Ocean Drive side (near Starbucks, not noisy!)
- Food in the restaurant is VERY GOOD. The price is best anywhere!
- Laurence is wonderful and her staff adore her and she manages very well. GM should praise her!
- Complimentary Internet, Continental Breakfast, Bottled Water on a daily basis is a plus.

We stayed at many other hotels in South Miami Beach that is more luxurious, more fancy,
more cleaner to be honest but our home is here at Penquin because we prefer to stay where
the staff are naturally hospitable and welcome you like family, that said is more important
than anything for a wonderful, enjoyable stay. Thank you.

Room Tip: Make sure to ask for a firm/good bed. Make sure you ask that you have a room that has night stands a...

Hello, Tim. It is so wonderful to hear you've been coming to our hotel year after year. We are thrilled that you are always happy with the service you receive, and we will be sure to share your kind words with Laurence and the rest of the restaurant staff. We are glad you like the location of our hotel and your meals in our restaurant. We certainly apologize for the issues you faced with engineering and housekeeping, as well as the service you received at our sister hotel, and will be sure to discuss them with the staff, so to avoid them in the future. Thank you again for your helpful feedback and we look forward to seeing you in the future.

You pay for what you get, or so I thought.

This place, as many other reviews state, is simple and affordable. It was clean, did the job considering how much you pay. A few nice perks such as free internet and free happy hour drinks--the server was extremely friendly and good, especially considering the other service you can get in South Beach.

We had the option of 1 queen bed or 2 full beds. I chose the 1 queen bed and the bed we had in our room was definitely 1 full bed. If I had known I wasn't going to get a queen bed, I would have requested two fulls. I spoke to the front desk attendant who told me she was going to put it in a email to the general manager, but I never heard back. I would have expected a phone call and an explanation and either a new room or compensation for the issue.

For that reason, I will likely consider another hotel next time I'm in town. Or at least request a room with 2 double beds...

Needed a great hotel to grab some quick, much needed sun and fun in Jan. This choice fit the bill. While I was a bit skeptical that it may not fit the needs and mercedez benze taste of my lady friend, it won! Art deco, centrally located to everywhere, it got my thumbs up.

The hotel could do a little better with the cleaning of the bathrooms and the cost of valet was crazy!

From what I previously saw from the show, they have made monumental strides in saving their prime real estate on Ocean Drive.

I was pleasantly surprised during our stay. It was overwhelming to look online for a hotel room at South Beach and not break the bank. I thought our room was beautiful, did not mind the small, simple design of room and bathroom. We were only there to sleep. Only complaint is the very squeaky mattresses, those should be updated, replaced. Besides that, our room was nice and quiet for sleeping.
