We had a lengthy layover in Miami and having never been to South Beach before, booked a room at the Marriott South Beach hotel months ago based on trip advisor comments. What a disappointment. Service was mediocre at best, no one seemed to know of any good Italian restaurants in the area or how to get to them. When they did finally find one to recommend, they neglected to mention there was a dress code for dining.

The hotel location is poor unless you want to take a cab everywhere. It's located on the far end of the beach so expect to walk four or five blocks through an area that is either under construction or shuttered buildings. It's not their fault that there's a construction site right next door but it didn't help their image.

The hotel is nice and the room was clean but average. We left very early in the morning and was again disappointed to find that the web check out feature didn't work and when we went down to the lobby there was no one at the counter and no bell to summon them. We were lucky to find a bellman to hail a cab.

Had recent stay with my wife and was disappointed in overall service. This a Marriott where you get nickel and dimed for everything. Overnight parking is $30.00 which is a rip and it also costs 10.00 per person to rent beach chairs. They do have service on the beach which is nice but drinks were ridiculously expensive.(I guess that is to be expected in South Beach) We also waited very long for someone to serve us at the outdoor cafe. The other downside is that the pool is very small and you are sitting on top of the other guests. Room service was also an adventure as they could not get a simple order right. The only positive of the property is that the location is pretty good and you can walk to bars and restaurants. Being a frequent Marriott guest I would prefer the Eden Roc but that is under major construction right now. For the money, there are better choices in South Beach!!

I had booked 4 rooms, 3 standard and 1 concierge with ocean view. I was absolutely devastated when we arrived to find that there was not only a building site next door to the 3 standard rooms, but they were working on it from 7 am every morning until the New Year Weekend. The dust was awful, and the terrace of the Concierge Lounge was very dusty - every evening when we went up we had to clean the tables and chairs. When we arrived after 4 pm our room was not ready for 3-1/2 hrs and the only person who took any trouble with us was the Concierge Lounge Steward - he was brilliant!! I did have a word with the GM, who was very amenable but to be honest to go all the way to South Beach from England and not be warned did not impress.

We had booked there for New Year's Eve but quickly changed venue. We had a pleasant stay at the hotel as the 3 standards were upgraded to be able to use the Concierge Lounge and the noise did stop. However like a previous reviewer we would not return to that hotel we would go further into South Beach - great place loved it all. We found some great restaurants, and got a lot of exercise on the beach. Good weather too.

So all in all we didn't feel we got value for money - and when I wanted to post postcards back to England the desk had no stamps, and the shop were selling 2 x 84c stamps for $2.50!! Couldn't understand why the reception couldn't help out - surely that would have been an added touch of customer service!!

The only exceptional thing about this hotel is its location. It is located right on the beach (and has its own private section of beach), and it is near all the South Beach action but not right in the thick of things (which we like). Everything else about this hotel is just average. Our room was just average and beginning to show signs of wear, the linens were average, our balcony had a great ocean view but was tiny and had very old tacky furniture, and the hotel restaurant was so-so. Overall the price we paid did not seem worth it. The next time we go to South Beach we will definitely stay somewhere else.

The South Beach Marriott offered exactly what we wanted. Even though a few things bugged us, we'd go back again.

Beachfront:
The hotel has its own section on the public beach, with chairs/cushions/umbrellas/towels (for a fee). Drink service, too. Gratuity's included in the drink bill (some servers may not tell you). The service on the beach is adequate (they could be friendlier). Overall, the beach is beautiful... the water amazing. White sand, turquoise water, just enough waves to make it fun. Great beach for running, too.

Hotel:
It's not a cookie-cutter hotel at all. It's contemporary, has a warm and airy feel to it, has engaging designs/art... it's upscale but not too upscale. Pool is small but comfortable, with a waterfall and separate hot tub. If you're a couple looking for relaxation, this is a great place. I didn't see any kids during my stay.

Area:
It's a short walk to some of South Beach entertainment, but about 17 blocks to the center of it all (Lincoln Rd). Be prepared to take a taxi if you don't have a car. Or, bring extra-comfy shoes for the long walk. A MUST: On a weekend night, go to the Delano Hotel (Madonna owns it) for a cocktail and to view the pool.

Food:
Starbucks is attached, so coffee is just an elevator away. The Big Pink cafe/restaurant (a block away) is addictive! Stroll Ocean Drive and stop at one of the many outdoor restaurants. Check out Lincoln Rd and Espanola Way for food/people watching.

Our Room:
Very happy with it. Granite bathroom counters, roman tiled shower, down comforter/comfy pillows, LCD flat screen TV, etc. However, the outdoor patio (city view) has cheesy plastic chairs, and needs a paint job and some plants.

Gay friendly:
I think we were the only lesbian couple at the hotel. Mostly straight couples, some gay male couples. But we felt comfortable as a couple. We did get invitations from some friendly guys along Collins Street, but it was harmless flirting. :) Overall, however, South Beach seemed less "gay" than we expected. It's definitely not Provincetown.

Complaints:

-- Hotel staff was very friendly, especially George from room service. But, the staff from the company they hire for beach/pool service needs to be more service-oriented, more attentive, and friendlier.

-- The hotel next door is being torn down, so the noise from construction is annoying. We couldn't sit on our patio at all during the day, not even to eat breakfast in the morning or to chill out with a book after a day at the beach. We had to keep our patio door closed to have some quiet. You can hear it on the beach, at the pool, at the outdoor restaurant. Bring headphones!

-- Some of the outdoor chairs at the hotel were a bit old, dirty, or had cigarette burns. Make sure you have a towel to sit on them.

-- If you go check out the famous Pearl Restaurant and Champagne Lounge next door, make sure you wear your trendiest trendy outfit. My somewhat trendy partner and I were shooed away because we had on pieces of "beach attire." Otherwise known as open-toed sandals and nice khaki shorts.
