“Nice with with a few qualms”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 12, 2013

Pretty much what you would expect:

Location: perfect. A nice walk from the extremely busy parts of south beach (its not overly noisy at night), but close enough that it is very convenient.

Rooms: Nice rooms. Lots of pillows but are all very thick. Rooms are very small - which is fine. Beds are comfy and bathrooms are useful.

Amenities: Pool was nice. Chairs get taken up very quickly. More kids / families than I had expected. Have infused water at the pool for your pleasure. Walkout onto beach is very convenient. Internet was terribly slow and hardly worked for anyone in our group. Further making this a disappointing factor was the fact that the internet in the lobby is $7.95/15 minutes. Seems a little outrageous.

Service: great service. Doormen were very helpful. So was front-desk. Attentive, polite staff. Restaurants/bars were nice...good food and drinks.

You get what you pay for. Lived up to reputation.

Room Tip: North facing rooms on north side stare right into a white side wall of another building.

Happy to hear we lived up the reputation! For next time, be sure to call down to request a softer pillow- we have those upon request. Our WIFI system and hardware is going to be improved in the near future. Thanks for staying with us and sharing your experience.

We were a family 4 staying in a deluxe double room for a short visit - 2 adults and two teenagers. The hotel has undergone a modernisation and has a funky feel about it. I would recommend careful thought before booking as we found it small by US standards

Positive
Beach location and within easy walking distance of Ocean Drive and Lincoln, etc.
Pleasant pool area and we encountered no problems securing chairs. Pool staff and front of desk were very warm

Negative
Delux Room is too small for family of four. One small rail and 4 drawers was the only storage. We had to put some cases into storage to make floor space.
Bathroom was tiny and air condition unit noisy .
External noise from outside and other rooms.

MCRTravelers-

We like to offer a great pool experience to get you out of the art-deco-sized rooms! I hope the positives outweigh the negatives on your list! We will be sure to look at ways to reduce noise in our rooms in future renovations.

Best,

Nick

I stayed for the first time at the Surfcomber in February 2012, and returned there for the weekend of April 5 - 7, 2013. The property is in great condition and the location -- with its own access to the beach and proximity to Lincoln Road -- is unbeatable. Ambience is stylish and fun. Friendly and responsive staff, as always at Kimpton hotels. Breakfast on Lantao's sunny terrace was a pleasure, and the poolside staff effectively manage the heavy demand for lounge chairs and towels. The Surfcomber is not the cheapest hotel in South Beach, but unlike many of its competitors, it provides the kind of quality aimed at encourging repeat visits.

DCTraveler -

Should I make you another reservation for June? It sounds like a return stay every two months is in order. We appreciate you sharing the kind feedback. I'm happy to hear you enjoy our property. See you soon!

we were delighted by our 2 night stay in April. They did not have rooms near each other for us so they upgraded one room to a suite which was lovely. front desk staff were amazing and no lie - the housekeepers were ALWAYS smiling and done early. Yes - rooms are small but it is SoBe. We loved the funky decor and enjoyed the wine on one night. nice

Location is great, on the beach, walking distance to Lincoln Road. The room was clean, small, but great for the two of us. Quite expensive for what you get, especially when adding in parking and wireless fees. Front desk staff and lobby/guest services staff were excellent. Had breakfast downstairs in the restaurant every morning, less than desirable. The service was awful, and it only consisted of a very simple continental breakfast. We had to ask multiple times for water, for utensils and napkins, and for coffee refills every time, and service was incredibly slow. It was an amusing part of the trip, wondering what our breakfast exerpience was going to consist of daily. The pool was small and very uninviting in comparison to other hotel pools, never used it. Did go to the beach daily which was nice. Being in the hospitality industry, I am discriminating, and this hotel is not.

Stayed there over 4 nights as a quick getaway with my wife. Overall very happy with the place.
Location - Excellent - far enough from the 'scene' to be quiet, but close enough to Lincoln St., lots of other nearly restaurants, and even Ocean Drive is not a major walk.
Staff - Excellent - Always very helpful & curteous. Not too sure about the concierge though - he/she was rarely to be found, but the front desk staff answered all of our questions anyhow.
Wine reception - be on time! Pretty good white, didn't care so much for the red, but that's just my opinion, and hey it's a free glass of wine.
WiFi - probably the best I've seen to login to, no need for repeat logins, and pretty fast!
Valet - Price-wise...it is what it is, but service was prompt.
Design - funky, fun, modern, but not over the top.
I saw a couple of reviews complaining about poor conditons, trash, etc. The grounds were well kept everywhere we were.

We had some minor concerns were mostly beyond the control of the staff. There is no hot-tub, which would have been nice. The Courtyard is basically a palm-lined walkway, so having a courtyard view is nothing really special, and most of the views are blocked by palm leaves anyhow. If you're there to stay in your room and enjoy the view, then pay to upgrade, but if you're there to enjoy the beach or the scene firsthand, then you're not in your room much anyhow. Bathrooms are small - you tend to stand kitty-corner to the sink, partly over the toilet, when you're brushing teeth, etc., but more of a concern is the shower glass wall that only goes 1/2 way back - the floor gets soaked. Whatever towel we had just used to dry off was then added to the floor to soak up more water - this was just bad design from the architect.

Breakfast at Lantao was a disappointment - it started with a lipstick-smudged glass for my OJ, and no milk/creamer for my wife's coffee. Once that was dealt with, my wife got over-easy eggs instead of the scrambled she had ordered. This is a $5.99 breakfast, not hotel quality. Go to the Diner at 11th street!

Last, the pool officially closes at 5pm, and I think the outside bar at the same time. Not sure if this is because Lantao has outdoor seating, and they want to keep a calmer scene for the diners. Personally I would expand the bar, and open it and the pool up until late in the evening - more revenue for them, and I'd get the chance for an evening swim!

Despite the laundry list, those concerns didn't detract from our experience by much. Given the estimated price range of other hotels in the area that I'd want to stay in, or the condition of others in the area that I wouldn't want to...this is probably one of the better ones around.

Business trip so should have known better than to stay right on south beach...very noisy between 3 and 6 a.m with people coming in from the bars and walls are paper thin. Older hotel so can't be helped. Rooms are tiny for the money...but nice enough and very clean. Beds are very comfy. Staff was wonderful...especially Chris at front desk. He gave some excellent recommendations for supper and made us feel very welcome. Skip room service all together...huge disappointment for the price and quality.
