Mondrian South Beach Hotel
Ranked #41 of 210 Hotels in Miami Beach
Reviewed May 14, 2012

Overall – I would definitely return and recommend, but not for everyone. We are locals to South Florida and enjoy the short drive into Miami for long weekends. I didn’t want the loud and crowded party scene this weekend, instead opting for a relaxed, low key but active weekend. Unless there is a special event or party planned, then Mondrian is usually not a loud, party, crowded and clubby hotel like some of the other bigger places.

HOTEL – Décor is obviously unique, modern, trendy and in my opinion charming. Service was fantastic from the valet, check in, fast room service, lobby and pool bar, etc. The hotel was busy, but not super crowded, which is what we were looking for. Has a smaller boutique hotel feel, not a huge resort. The lobby bar area was comfortable, but not a huge party scene. Again, this is what we wanted. Friday was quiet, and Saturday was a little more lively, but again, if you want a very lively, club-like scene or place to dance, then you’ll want to explore elsewhere at night.

VALET - $$$$$ Like all of the Miami Beach hotels, Valet is robbery at $37 a day. Not including tip. Trust me with this - If you don’t plan on leaving the Miami Beach area (i.e drive up to Fort Lauderdale, Palm Beach or the Everglades, etc) then don’t bother renting a car at the airport!! Take a taxi to the hotel and out during the day/night. You’ll spend a fortune on valets everywhere you go or drive yourself nuts looking for parking.

GYM - The gym is modern with a decent selection of cardio and weight equipment. Can’t beat the view of the bay and skyline from the treadmills. I didn’t visit the Spa, but have heard numerous wonderful reviews.

POOL - Loved the pool area. The set up is very charming and picturesque with numerous seating areas, including a section of “beach” chairs in a huge sandbox. Loved the cabana “caves”. The service at the pool bar and eating outside was fantastic. On Friday afternoon, we spent a few hours poolside and it was so relaxing and peaceful. However, it can get more active and lively on weekends.

LOCATION – I was not looking for beach swimming or tanning on this trip, hence the 10-15 minute walk to the beach was not an issue for me. In my opinion, this location is fantastic! Walk to shopping and dining. Ten minute walk to beach or Washington or Collins shopping, another 15-20 minute walk or 5-10 minute bike ride to Lincoln. Loved the amazing bay views, especially at night when the skyline is beautiful.

I LOVE the DecoBike system! There are self-service stations all over Miami Beach, including several around the hotel. Rent a bike and explore all over Miami Beach. I highly recommend downloading the DecoBike app to your phone… it will tell you the closest stations to your location to drop off/pick up bikes, including availability. Another tip – even though there are a ton of DecoBike stations for you to check bikes in/out, bring or buy a bike lock. Much easier when you want to run in a store and don’t want to look for a station – just chain your bike up in front. However, since you can’t take DecoBikes over the bridges, we spent a day renting hybrid bikes from Bike and Roll shop. We rode over the Venetian bridge (very pretty), over to Bayside and then down Brickell to Vizcaya. Long ride, but so nice. We rode back from Vizcaya to their other location in Bayside and dropped the bikes there instead of back to Miami Beach origination. Grabbed a taxi back to the hotel.

ROOM – We selected a room facing east (not the bayside view, instead a city/ocean side view). Being on a high floor we had nice views, however, the lower floors wouldn’t be that nice of a view. I intentionally selected this side of the hotel instead of overlooking the pool/bay, as I’ve read other reviews that when they have pool events, parties or DJ’s on the weekends it can get very loud. The room itself is spacious, modern, comfortable and very functional. Dramatic bathrooms (loved the shower!), small but very functional kitchenette, and comfortable queen size bed. Room was very clean and comfortable. As others have mentioned, the hotel food price is outrageous ($80 for eggs, OJ and coffee for breakfast – and that does not include any blood mary’s or champagne!). DEFINITELY walk across the street to Whole Foods and stock up your kitchenette and small fridge with drinks and snacks. There is a very small two burner cook top, microwave and coffee maker in the room for simple cooking.

Room Tip: TIP – ONE: If you absolutely don’t need a rental car – then DO NOT get one. Take a taxi from the ai...

I had reserved my room very early this year and was sent a confirmation to upgrade to a suite if available for a rate of 9 Dollars a day. When we arrived we got a real nice suite in the 12 thj floor overlooking the Bay .The place was really nicely designed ,probably 800sq.ft.,and in perfect condition.very nice are the amenities from in new york.the breakfast is ok for 22.- US,continental buffet, eggs and capuccinos are extra.the valet parking for 37.- USD is a little pricy, but there are no parking possibilities around.Because of the location, not at ocean drive, you find some nice and easy eateries around. The pool is nice, but there is a lot of Music. After 6 pm thursday to s sunday, its a party place of young nice people.

Our biggest concern with this hotel was the location, since it wasn't on Ocean Drive. That is actually one of its biggest strengths! The west location on the bay lends to beautiful views of the city, especially at sunset. The location also protects you from the evening breeze off the ocean, which allows you to comfortably sit outside by the pool all night (not possible at the east side hotels).
The pool area is fabulous, with the service staff outside absolutely focused on doing everything they can to make our stay perfect. Food was excellent, drinks were even better! (Try the ceviche, and the Bellini's!)

Room Tip: Pay more for the rooms with the bay view.

First time at South Beach Mondrian and overall we had a pleasant stay. The pool area is fantastic as is the staff. My only hiccup was with the room cleanliness when we arrived and some inconsistency with the food quality (under cooked/over cooked/burnt).

The rooms show a little signs of wear and tear, considering it's fairly new hotel. Other than that I recommend it for contemporary getaway in South Beach.

Room Tip: We had a One bedroom balcony suite. The balcony is facing south beach and apparently there is couple...

Joni,

Thank you for your review and for your stay. We’re sorry for the hiccups but trust we were able to sort these out quickly for you. To clarify, we have 1 Bedroom Suites on both sides of the building, facing the Bay and facing South Beach—both afford excellent views.

We hope to see you again soon.

Yep. It's on West Avenue overlooking the water and out to the City.
That's a blessing as its away from the scene on Ocean Drive. But still only a short walk/cab/cycle.

Beautifully decorated boutique hotel. Lovely public areas. Quirky hotel shop which is an automated machine. Bar area and restaurant Asia de Cuba are excellent but a little expensive.
We had a three course dinner and it was fresh and delicicious. The mojitos come in jam jar glasses and are really refreshing.

The rooms are huge, with a small kitchenette and a bathroom with a rainfall shower.
The kitchen was not well equipped. So I would say a little difficult to stay longer than a few days.
The balcony overlooking the pool was spacious and afforded excellent view of they bay and the city skyline. Really great sipping a drink at sundown.

Dont stay in the poolside rooms if you arent into partying. Weekends they crank the music up to create a cool vibe. This hotel and perhaps Miami is not the place for those wanting a quiet weekend.

Hotel attracts a fair share of dressed up clientele. But a good mixture of different people around too. Did not feel it was "too cool for skool"

Facilities nearby were excellent. Starbucks and a couple of restaurants just opposite. Also a Wholefood for provisions. A 10 minute walk down West Ave is a small shopping complex with larger more mainstream supermarket. Barton G is also only a 5 min walk.

Staff in the main were polite and friendly. Only one person was rude.
Had an issue with the swipe cards which kept resetting themselves. Not handled nicely.

Overall a great stay. Loved the spacious rooms.

Room Tip: Pool/waterside with balcony are awesome rooms

As a former resident of Miami now living in Atlanta, I frequently travel back and forth to meet with clients, visit friends or just for a weekend getaway. In the past, I've stayed at another hotel which has a relationship with my firm. However, I don't think I will ever stray from the Mondrian. The location is absolutely perfect. You're not privy to the unsavory parts of the beach but you're also walking distance or a $5 cab drive to Lincoln Road and Ocean Drive. You also have easy interstate access so you can get to Brickell, downtown, the Design District or Coral Gables relatively easily. I would be remiss if I didn't mention the accomodating and friendly staff. David Arth at the pool was very attentive to our needs both at the pool and our overall stay in general. Ditto Nocle Ormeno at the front desk.

Room Tip: If you can, get a room with a view and a balcony. The view of the bay and the city is spectacular. I...

This is hands down one of the best experiences my wife and I have had in Miami. From start to finish this large hotel had a boutique atmosphere, personalized service, and an extremely attentive staff! The hotel was exceptionally clean, and the outside area was roomy, had plenty of staff to help with towels and lounge chairs, likewise, the view of the islands was excellent! Specifically I would like to call attention to Olya the bartender outside who knew her drinks inside and out. We had an opportunity to sample some of the new creations the Mondrian had to offer, as well as some classics. The staff at the front desk was just as helpful. Likewise, I don't believe I've ever experienced a more prompt valet service. Over all the hotel's contemporary decor did not isolate you or feel cold, it felt just right and very inviting. We cannot wait to stay at this hotel on our next trip. I strongly recommend the Mondrian as a very necessary part of anyone's Miami experience.
