The Freehand hotel had a really chilled out atmosphere. I would not recommend it for a romantic getaway or family trip--but for me and my 20-some year old friends it was our kind of scene. The room is a dorm room--small with super comfortable bunk beds. It didn't have a television--which you don't need in Miami anyway--or shampoo/conditioner--for sale at front desk--but the price was right and we didn't spend much time in the room. The hotel lobby is a relaxed hang out, and, even on a Monday night, there was partying in the 'back yard'--complete with a pool, ping pong tables, and a bar specializing in mixology. It is in a safe location, a block from the beach, and about 15 blocks to the main strip of bars and restaurants in South Beach. If you want to experience South Beach Miami on a budget--this is the place to be! (Just make sure you are renting a room//not a bed//unless you are looking for a hostel!)

Room Tip: The elevator is out of service//so if you plan to take a lot of baggage request a lower floor

Barely two months old, this place is a true gem in Miami Beach. Close enough to the craziness of South Beach but far enough that you can actually find quiet time. Though initially quite easy to miss if you were on the driver's seat looking for the address while your GPS is telling you that "you've arrived at your destination", once you've found parking (not always easy) and made your way to the entrance, walking into this place will catch you off guard with delight. The decor is contemporary with a hint of shabby chic, without the snottiness of South Beach. The lobby is inviting not only for the backpackers that are caught by surprise that actually IS a hostel, but also to the locals who pass through in high heels and short skirts to get to its hip (and really popular on saturdays) mixology bar, Broker Shaker, located in the garden area.
The dorm rooms (either 4 or 8 bed) are what you'd expect from a dorm room with regards to bunk beds, shared table spaces, and lockers, but have elements of small luxury that one wouldn't expect in a hostel - already prepped beds with fresh linens, daily fresh towel, personal "cubby holes" with outlets next to the head of the bed, and an actually ample sized & comfortable mattress. They even managed to line one side of the bed on the wall with a slightly angled cushion so that you can rest your upper back or neck while watching a flick on your ipad or reading a book. Clearly they thought about "the little things" that hardened backpackers would notice as luxury immediately.
And for the price? Though dorm beds are a little more pricey than those in hostels in parts of eastern europe, south america, and asia, IT IS, after all, Miami Beach. It costs less than staying at a buddy's place downtown or midtown for free, paying for valet parking in their building, and hopping a cab back and forth to the clubs in the beach AND way less than paying for a tiny old room in an Art Deco on Ocean Drive.
Overall - the attention to detail, the comfortable beds, the hotspot mixology, the price, the location, and the almost hipster-ish VIBE (there's ping pong tables and bocci ball courts as well) make this the best value for money in Miami Beach.

I'm a freshman in college thus I am underage to check into a hotel and don't make much money. I love staying at the hostel because it's really inexpensive, they have breakfast (a cool variety of breakfast foods at that), the rooms are clean, it's decorated really nicely, the pool area is nice and fun, and the front desk is really helpful. For example, at four a.m. someone was playing PIANO and it woke me up, so I called the front desk to tell them to stop and the person stopped! It's also nice because right across the street is the beach, a food mart, and Subway. It's not far from downtown at all either. If you're used to a dorm then this will be fine for you considering other people will be in the same room. If not, then there's always private rooms available! Definitely going again. WOO Spring break!!!!!

Room Tip: Try to be farther down the hall away from the main doors. You will hear less commotion. Also, if you...

I have stayed in hostels before and they were okay but nothing special. The Freehand is special. The private room was fantastic. The decor throughout the place was cool. The pool was perfect. Breakfast was okay (pastries and fruit salad). A two block walk to the beach. We loved it! The only bad part was parking. On street or in a public lot. We took back the rental car and took the local bus back to the hostel and walked everywhere and used the local bus after that. There is a cheap Cuban restaurant up the block as well as a little grocery store. Good times!

We’re working on fixing the parking situation here at the Freehand, soon we will have an affordable valet service. We’re glad you took advantage of our close proximity to so many destinations by just walking or using the public transportation.

I stayed in this hostel for one night, having previously visited it with a friend a few nights before with a friend.

The single sex dorms are well kept, with a vibrant atmosphere evident throughout.

A bar out the back is pleasant, albeit a little on the expensive side.

A fruit and cake light breakfast is available and pleasant.

Overall, I would recommend a well-priced stay at Freehand.

If you are looking for a low cost quality hostel/hotel in Miami, you have found it. Very relaxed, cool and friendly atmosphere. I was planning to stay for 2 days but ended up staying for a whole week. The room was clean, moderately spacious with new towels every day. After a good night sleep in a comfortable bed the hotel serves complimentary breakfast of fruits, yogurt and croissants with orange juice and coffee.
Location is great, about 15-20 minutes from Ocean Drive and 3-5 minutes to the beach. You can also use the bikes and free mini cars to get around the beach in a fast and affordable way.The Shaker (bar) has a cool lounge, nice crowd, great easy listening music selections, cheap drinks, innovative cocktails and friendly bartenders. You can also take a dip in the pool if you like.
Last but not least is the staff. The Freehand front desk staff was extremely helpful and friendly. Quality service that any luxury hotel would be proud of.

Bottom line: This place has all you need to have a good and affordable stay in a beautiful city. Highest recommendations to the Freehand and its staff. I would definitely stay there again.

I spent one night here recently, loved it and will definitely be back. The Freehand is in a great Iocation - close to the beach and only a 15 or 20 minute walk to the heart of South Beach! I stayed in a private quad room. It is very clean and the beds are amazingly comfortable! A little noisy during the wee hours of the morning, but that should be expected. The lobby area was comfortable with a Bohemian flair - I wasn't quite sure if I was in the US or perhaps in Zanzibar! The complimentary breakfast was adequate - coffee, juice and mini muffins and other pastries. The pool and garden area has a very cool vibe with twinkling lights, lanterns and plenty of comfortable seating. If boredom sets in, try ping pong or boule and there are also bikes to rent The Broken Shaker bar -- wow!!!! ---- although tiny in size, it is probably the coolest, most unique bar that I have ever been in - anywhere!!! Offerings include pretty wild takes on classic cocktails, daily punches (wonderful!) - mixology at its finest!! and a good beer list as well! The music was great and the staff was friendly and attentive, which brings me to my only complaint...the front desk staff needs some work...the majority of them are not very friendly - almost flippant with a touch of arrogance - lacking in good old fashioned customer service. Hopefully those issues will be resolved as the Freehand just opened, but the poor attitudes and service from a few staff members would not stop me from returning.
