I never write to things like this but I do have to say that the trip review helped out allot in our decision to stay at the Essex. We just came back on Sunday from this great weekend getaway. The hotel is quiet, clean and the location is even better. The bathroom is small, but it didn't bother us. The people at the front office is great, talk to Tomas or Domigo. Make sure you get VIP cards to the clubs from the front desk. $25 pp to get into a club, VIP cards (FREE), you have to ask for them.

My girlfriend and I were very happy with the Essex House. After reading the reviews, we weren't expecting a five star hotel, and it's not one. Just a good, solid mid level hotel with some architectural character and an unbeatable location. It's literally a block to the beach. The pool is teeny but cute. Our room was smallish and dim-- but it was perfectly comfortable and SILENT-- a godsend in a noisy strip. I'd say this place is best for non-partying, laid back types and people with reasonable expectations of what their money is going to get thuem in a hot tourist strip. I'd happily return to the Essex House.

I just got back from a 7 night stay at the essex house and had a very nice time. There are good and bad things about every hotel especially if you want to pay less then 125$ per night including tax. It seems that many reviews focus on the neg. making it difficult to know what your really getting!

The good. Clean Room! Big TV with expanded cable and movie channels (rained hard for 2.5 days, glad to have it) Daily room service with fresh towels and soap and stufff. Quiet!!! Never more noise then one might expect at a hotel (occasional foot steps above or voices down the hall. Never a problem) Location is GReat!! albiet a bit noisey out on the veranda with the traffic on collins. No musty odors or Bugs or water stains! Everything you would expect in a decent room.

The bad. No bar for afternoon cocktails/ but it keeps the foot traffic down, so maybe not all bad and theres hundreds of places to go get smashed all around. No food..same deal. keeps the place Mellow and theres no shortage of options all around. The room is Small.

If your having a tuff time deciding where to stay because of all the scare tactics used by a couple poopoo'ers on the web, then stay here.
Have a clean quiet room in a great area of SOBE and go make noise some place around the corner.

Past reviews on TripAdvisor and other websites led us to expect more than we got. A number of amenities we thought would be available were not. The hotel didn't seem to be very full, and we got the impression it was trying to cut costs by doing little things that weren't going to amount to much (eg, not replacing the shampoo in the bathroom). Earlier reviews had talked about a concierge, but no concierge. Earlier reviews had talked about how helpful the bartender was, no longer any bar or bartender. Reviews had said the hotel could help with VIP access to clubs or a discount at the local health club, but that stuff was gone, too. I suppose if we never knew that these features had existed, we wouldn't have been as disappointed. However, when it comes right down to it, these were some of the reasons we decided to book at the Essex House.

We found the Essex House Hotel overpriced and a little worn (like everything else in SoBe). The public areas--lobby, pool, porch were in good shape, but the room was in need of maintenance and sprucing up.
Even with the soundproofing windows, the bar band at the Clevelander on the other side of alley from the Essex could be heard most of the night (and we were on the 3rd floor at the far end of the hall from the alley).

My husband and I stayed 3 nights in early December - loved the decor, the staff, the location and the pool/spa. First floor room with queen bed was comfortable and overlooked a quiet courtyard with a bubbling fountain. The staff was always available and invariably polite and ready to answer questions. Parked in the nearby ( 2 blocks) municipal garage at reasonable cost. The sunny veranda was a great spot to people watdch and sip a morning coffee or enjoy a late afternoon snack. A good choice.

We just returned from a 4 day stay at the Essex. I chose it over the others in the Art Deco district because it was the only one that seemed to garner consistently positive reviews from other travelers. I was a little disappointed to find ants crawling on top of the mini fridge, crumbs and beverage rings on other surfaces, despite the fact that our room was "ready" for us. Our next room was bug-free but the top of the fridge was just as sticky. The staff were relatively friendly, esp. the front desk, and the rest of the hotel seemed neat if drab. However, I would choose another hotel if I visit Miami again.
