“My stay at the Avalon”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 11, 2011

Just stayed at the Avalon, the staff is wonderful and accommodating especially Edith, Ana and Jorge. The hotel is clean, beds are very comfortable, the air conditioning is more than sufficient, the water pressure in the shower exceeds most hotel, the continental breakfast was very good. The location was perfect. Will definately stay there again. GREAT STAY IN SOUTH BEACH.......

My daughter Sabrina Kitchens, Nick Mansel and Ricky Reyes stayed at the Avalon Hotel after their trip to Venezuela for the Pan Am Games. Nick and Ricky are both deaf and my daughter was the interpreter for the US MENS DEAF SOCCER TEAM.

My girlfriend Beth Krumholz and I met them in Miami and the Front Desk staff JORGE and ANA were amazing, they went so far as to look up sign language on a web site and signed to Nick and Ricky when they arrived. Jorge and Ana both gave us printed maps for good places to eat while the kids were visiting.

Ana set up a wake-up call for their departure the next morning and called a TAXI for them to take them to the airport.

The room was clean and they were in a quiet part of the hotel so they could get much needed sleep before their flight.

My girlfriend and I are always being asked by our neighbors to go on a Cruise with them. After the attention that we received at the Avalon Hotel, I believe that that will be our destination when we want to get away for a weekend. The hotel is located in the mix of South Beach and offers a very nice restaurant on site and many restaurants in the surrounding neighborhood.

So if you are considering South Beach, consider staying at the Avalon. Tell Jorge and Ana that Jack and Beth sent you.

Sincerely,
Jack Lodato

Finding a reasonable and friendly hotel in South Beach is not an easy thing to do. Most seem not to care if you stay with them or not, charge ridiculous resort fees on top of room rates, and don't include breakfast. A notable exception is the Avalon. It would be hard to say enough good things about this place. No resort fees, fair pricing, an excellent breakfast, and service that is unequaled. George at the front desk is without equal at making guests feel welcome, as is Edith, and we greatly appreciated their efforts. Message to management: give these guys a raise! The rooms are fairly small, but are well appointed, with very comfortable beds, and terrific towels. The front desk even provides beach towels--without charge, and without a resort fee. An excellent stay overall, and we look forward to our next visit.

Evidently they spent much more on their website than they invest in the rooms. The hotel is cute on the outside and the lobby/restaurant area is nice enough. However the rooms have not been updated in a long time, the carpet is dirty and doesn't reach the baseboards in some places. There are scuffs on the walls and the furniture was dingy. The drapes were awful and smelly. Overall I'd say there's a lack of attention to detail and an "oh, well" attitude among the staff that seems to prevail throughout South Beach establishments. I will say the bathroom was a nice size for a small room and was spotless! Even though I was sternly warned about the fines imposed if I smoked in the room, I could never get the smoke stink from the previous guest out of my room, even when they brought up some ozone contraption that was also dirty. If you do stay, don't pay for an oceanfront room. The restaurant at the Avalon and the surrounding foot and car traffic at the front of the building create heavy noise that goes well into the night and the old windows are not insulated.

Although we were only there for one night before embarking on a cruise, I was extremely disappointed for the price I paid and felt stupid for being swayed by all the nice pics on the website. There are nicer, cleaner, more spacious and gracious hotels on the same strip. We stayed at the Crescent "resort" one night after the cruise for the same price and it was lovely.

My traveling companion felt like I had unrealistic expectations for South Beach. That may be the case but I stay in hotels for a living. The very least they should have done was move us to another room.

Room Tip: avoid beachfront unless you are on a high floor... even then it will be noisy.

We had two rooms at the Avalon and upon arrival were initially slightly disappointed, but quickly learned that what this hotel lacks in basics it more than makes up for in personality and location. Let me start by saying that when we came in I was incredibly impressed with Ana at the front desk. I read a previous review saying that she was rude- i'm not sure if she had a bad day or if it was a misunderstanding b/c I usually can't remember names, but hers stuck b/c she was so nice to us! It is important to note that these "art deco" hotels have little in common with what most of us are used to at the cookie cutter chains, but this hotel was more than adequate for our needs. The restaurant downstairs is nothing short of AMAZING and the rooms were clean and comfortable. Not a great view, but we didn't spend most of our time in the room. The breakfast is also not your standard fare- it is european style (meats, cheeses, fruit, breads, hard boiled eggs, etc. They have cereal, danish and bagels for those who like sweets in the morning, too. Like I said before- this is not a new, perfect, polished, luxury resort so don't expect it to be. It is a clean, comfortable, affordable and cozy architectural gem on quite possibly one of the best corners in south beach. Close to everything!

Room Tip: Streetside rooms can hear music playing from shop across the street fairly late into the evening.

Great location on Ocean Drive, cute room, really great bathroom - at a very decent price.

Breakfast included, but don't bother - ready made rubbish in plastic kitchen ware for self serving - terrible...

The hotel accommodations, cleanliness and general state of repair were average. The location is great if your interest is the beach by day and the strip by night. They had no crib in the hotel (yes, we went there with kids, but Miami Beach was not the primary destination of our trip, just a diversion). The staff was friendly and helpful enough. I would compare the accommodations to a Comfort Inn.
