Miami has a new art museum located on the bay in center of city, near AA Arena, etc. The design is outstanding. The permanent collection is interesting, but not yet outstanding. Of note there is currently an extensive exhibit of the works of Ai Wei Wei, the Chinese artist, architect and human rights fighter. It is outstanding.

The Perez Art Museum is a great place to visit if you like modern art. It starts with the building, which is a superb place with trees coming down from the ceiling. The museum is bright, open and fascinating

We made a reservation to go to the restaurant on Thursday night and security at the entrance sent cars away telling people in every car to go find parking somewhere on the street. They made us be late and they created a whole traffic jam on Biscayne Blvd. The Valet parking staff is not organized and not polite at all. Every third Thursday of the month there is also an event, they have a DJ as a special guest from 6-9pm. If they do events of this magnitude they should have enough parking spots for guests and specially for the ones that go to the restaurant with a reservation, they should have a different area reserved. What a shame!
The museum is great and I will return during the day to enjoy -hoping to find parking, of course-

The architecture of this new museum is truly spectacular. The entrance off Biscayne Blvd was a bit hard to figure out as the road is still under construction and we drove by it once, thinking the road was closed. The parking lot is not paved, but rather has a pebble floor which allows for water, due to the possibility of heavy rain and flooding, to filter through and go right back into the ocean on which the building borders. The building is on stilts again allowing for the weather. There are huge plants native to Florida both in the ground and hanging down from planters on the top floor - just gorgeous. The roof and overhang that the planters are attached to is all wood, with the doors to the building made out of teak. The flooring inside is also wood.

The inside of the building is large and very bright as there are massive windows all around the building, looking out onto the port, the high rises of Miami and the bridge nearby. The space was designed very carefully to allow for lots of movement.

There were lots of children there and our guide (free 45 minute tour) explained that every Grade 8 child in the Miami-Dade area will visit the Museum with his/her school this year.

Now for the exhibit. We were fortunate to be able to experience the Ai Wei Wei exhibit. This was the second time I had seen it and it was still wonderful to see and most impressive. There also was a room of photographs and various other works of art. However, the main focus of the museum was the Wei Wei exhibit and depending upon the exhibit at the time, the building is just as much a destination to see as perhaps the exhibit.

We had lunch in the café which was very crowded. We had to wait for a table (or could have eaten outside with no wait.) The shrimp salad was excellent and the other options - hamburgers, salads, sandwiches - all looked most delectable as they passed by our table. Very good coffee.

All in all a very good day
