“use bug spray”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2013

It's a short walk through the hammocks to the site, but in that short time you will be eaten alive by all the mosquitoes if you don't come prepared. It's a nice little spot for a picnic but there's really not much to see. The waterfront area is pretty small. It's only a $2 donation to get in and a few more for a tour. It's right in downtown Coconut Grove, so a good spot to get away for a short time.

“nothing to see.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2013

I understand it is historic but honestly there is nothing to see.
If you want go see it, look at water, shrug shoulders and leave.
Then you do not need to visit again for about 20 years..
If you went to eat across the street, drank too much and wanted to burn off the buzz then it will work.

“Good Site, Great Value”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 27, 2013

Located in historic, trendy downtown Coconut Grove, Barnacle State Historic Site is well worth your time. Park nearby in public parking ($12/day) and you'll also be set for browsing shops and restaurants in the downtown area.

Built in 1891 by Commodore Ralph Monroe, the Barnacle House is the oldest house in its original location in Miami-Dade County. Walk down a beautiful shaded lane, through one of the last remaining tropical hardwood hammocks, past a carriage house, and you'll arrive at the custom-built house, which still contains most of the family furnishings.

This five-acre property also features "the cave," a mysterious, hand-dug pit cut right of of limestone, and a boat house Monroe used to design, build and repair various craft he sailed in Biscayne Bay. (During his lifetime, he designed 56 yachts.)

Bring cash to the site; admission is on the honor system and is a paltry $2 that you place in a state park envelope and drop in a metal box. Touring the inside of the house costs $3 and is well worth it; pay at the house. Tours only run 4x a day, so mind the schedule.

For a mere $5, you get a terrific stop with great atmosphere, an insightful look into a long-forgotten past, and a charming introduction to one of south Florida's most interesting pioneers.

“Great tour guide”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2013

I think you have to review this place in proportion to the cost of entry which including the tour is only $5. Bearing that in mind I think it is great value and a very interesting place when taken in context with the history of the local area. If you already know about Merrick, Deering, Flagler etc then you will love a visit to this place to find it's connection to the history of the area. The tour guide we had could not have been any nicer. Please remember to check the site for tour times because if you arrive an there is no tour you will not be allowed to enter the house.
