We have certainly seen our share of historic estates/palaces and gardens in Russia, Germany, France, Portugal and Spain. I feel that Vizcaya can proudly hold its own among the great architectural sights especially because it combines European and American traditions in a very unique and breathtaking location. Instead of 1-1.5 hours as we expected, the tour of the house and gardens took about 4 hours including a lovely tea on the terrace. There are numerous photo opportunities outside as no photography is permitted inside the house. An audio guide was extremely helpful and informative without providing too many technical details. Our 9-year-old listened attentively for most of the tour and was curious about many things. I am glad that Vizcaya was our first stop during the visit to Miami as it provided a very unique introduction to the area. I would gladly visit it again to take in the beautiful sights.

First, most kids would be bored to pieces here, so this is great for adults wanting a quiet stroll through gardens (don't go in high heat) and a tour of an eclectic, historic mansion. While there's no photography in the mansion, bring a camera anyway because the back has a great view of Biscayne Bay and the formal gardens make for nice portraits. Like everything in Miami, this attraction is expensive, but the tour was included and the docent was excellent - telling us about the original owner, the original designer, and the stories behind a lot of the pieces in the house. The house is odd, but fascinating and features most of the original decor. If you've been to Villa D'este outside of Rome or seen the canals of Venice, you'll likely see what the original owner, James Deering, and his designer were trying to re-create and merge with tropical themes like palms and seahorses. Also, crazily enough, the burger at the restaurant cafe was the best I've had in a long time.

Vizcaya was built in the early 1900s by a wealthy industrialist as a private home. The home and gardens were beautiful, but we were impressed by the number of 16th and 17th century artworks in the house. Worth a trip.

Vizcaya is the winter home of millionaire James Deering. It's right on the bay with gorgeous water views. It's 15 dollars to get in and well worth it. There are free guided tours of the ground floor and self-guided tours of the upstairs and gardens. The gardens are beautiful and even my husband enjoyed it. He says Ingress players should come here, I think that's a cell phone game. Overall this is a great place to leisurely enjoy an afternoon in Miami.
