Owner description: Built in 1916 as a winter retreat, this lavish villa is a tribute to the Italian Renaissance. The museum contains much of the original furnishings and artwork, and is surrounded by lush, formal gardens.

The interior of the large mansion is amazing and is full of antiques: each room has explanations on the furnishings which have come from all over the world. It was interesting to see the small rooms at the top of the spiral stairs and also the kitchen which looked as though work might start work in there at any moment. For me, the gardens are my favourite part of my visit: the orchid garden, close to the mansion's pool, is well kept. There are wonderful areas which remind me of the book The Secret Garden: stairs lead here, an arch leads there. It's a lovely place to just take time to wander around, enjoy the sound of trickling water and unwind. The view of Biscayne Bay is also superb. Definitely worth a visit if you're in Coral Gables/Coconut Grove

The house is full of magnificent art but my favorite part was the gardens. Keep your eyes peeled for the various critters (we saw several cats & a raccoon) dipping into food bowls that were set out for them in the garden.

I LOVED the gardens, they are really great! I didn't expected them to be so vast! The house itself in my opinion is not that great. It's oldest building in Miami (but it's only 100 years old so you can't really say that's history!). It has a lot of things crowded inside from different styles and eras... Not very tasteful and not very impressive to me.

this is one of the most beautiful "houses" in America. In Europe it might be called a palace. The gardens are a joy and all of this sits on land open to the sky and Biscayne Bay. I make my pilrimage there at least once a year ... It never fails that a first time guest there marvels at the place ... on hot days it is air conditioned inside!
