Owner description: Zoo Miami (also known as The Miami-Dade Zoological Park and Gardens) is the largest and oldest zoological garden in Florida, and the only sub-tropical zoo in the continental United States. The unique climate in South Florida allows us to keep a wide variety of animals from Asia, Australia and Africa, representing a broad mix of species that is unlike any other zoo in the country. Zoo Miami today occupies almost 750 acres, and is home to more than 3,000 animals representing over 500 different species. Of this population, more than 40 species are classified as endangered. The zoo also houses more than 1,000 species of trees, palms and other plants, and over 100 special exhibits showcasing a broad number of species and scientific topics. We are accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) which means we have passed a rigorous application and inspection process and meet or exceed the AZA's standards for animal health and welfare, fundraising, zoo staffing, and involvement in global conservation efforts. Zoo Miami is proud to be an active leader in many global wildlife and environmental conservation initiatives, and we are currently involved in over 36 projects taking place on six continents.

This is a large zoo and it will take you some time to walk and see the whole thing. The nice part about the size is they generally have big, open animal exhibits. The elephant and giraffe areas are particularly nice. The pathway is paved all around the park which makes walking easy, but it also makes it feel hotter. I would recommend this during the dry season but it would likely be pretty miserable from late May to early October.

I am not sure if it was because of the cold weather front in February or because it was Wednesday but it was almost an uneventful trip. There is so much empty space and it felt as if the zoo animal displays didn't flow- awkward layout. Do get a bike thing it will save half the time in your day. GIRAFFE feeding is probably the most exciting thing. Wouldn't go back.

We took in Zoo Miami on the way home from a family vacation to the Bahams and it turned out to be a great day. Probably helped that it was near perfect weather and the zoo was not very full, but it is a very nice zoo with good ways to get around if you are less than mobile.

Outside of the fact that the zoo has a real nice way of displaying their animals (pretty natural environments with animal that co-mingle in the wild living together in the zoo), there are several ways to get around if you don't want to hoof it all day. There is a hop-on/hop-off tram that makes a round about every 45 minutes or so. We chose the over ther top monorail. It is also a hop-on/hop-off system with four stations and makes its round every half hour or so. If you want more flexibility, you can rent a two or four passenger bike. I think they have the obligatory strollers and wheel chairs as well. I believe they also have some motorized wheelchairs.

One surprise was the food. They have some deli sandwiches and salads that were really good and had what really seemed like higher quality ingedients. I wasn't expecting that and it was a very pleasant surprise.

Nice place and very clean atmosphere. Don't miss the CritterCam building - fascinating!!

We just spent over four hours walking and seeing animals and were not able to see everything. If we had rented the bicycle carts built for two to four, we would have been able to see the whole zoo. Zoo was clean and animals looked well cared for. Most animals had very nice enclosures where they could exercise. Paths could have been marked more clearly. You really need to refer to the map to know where you are going. If you have young children and it's a hot day, there are a couple of spots they can go through and play in water sprinklers so bring bathing suits and towels.
Great family excursion.

I go to the miami zoo at least four times a year and every time I go I enjoy it more and more
It is the perfect place for family fun surrounded by all kinds of wild life
Feeding the giraffes is my favorite thing to do in the park. If you are lucky enough you can feed the rhinoceros
The new water park is great for kids all year round
Totally recommend this zoo
