We were treated like good family at this water themed motel. The view is all water and the area is still "old Florida" with emphasis on fishing and seafood. Take the staff's recommendations on dining and fishing.

The Inn's web site gave a good feeling for the accommodations and choices. www.bridgewaterinn.com The very recent new management team, Janet and Matt, made our stay very enjoyable. We booked Suite 2 for Labor Day Weekend. Since our daugher joined us, we also reserved room 5b. The latter is very small but comfortable. Our beachy decor suite faced water on two sides. The TV was fairly new and linked to a satellite service. We had a walk-in closet with drawers. The bath was old, but the tub has the new curved shower rod and a newer pedistal sink. What lacked in counterspace, items filled the mirrored medicine cabinet over the sink. The potty flushed really well. The two double beds were comfortable. The fridge kept our beer ice cold and steaks ready for the grill one night. With Hurricane Gustav heading into the Gulf, the outer bands sent lots of rain & wind our way. Matt knew that the park-like grills probably wouldn't flame our steaks well, so he put his Weber on the back of his truck and brought it over early in the evening. THANK YOU! They were great. Then he knew we were going to fish after and brought a bait bucket with a few minnows. That's hospitality!!! It's a rustic place to stay but if you are looking for a slice of Old Florida...this is the place to stay. Prepare to relax and enjoy the views! Kick back, open a beer and go barefoot. Meet your fellow guests on the deck that surrounds the Inn. Bring a fishing rod and fish from right outside your room. The place is clean, clean, clean. Bottom of feet didn't get dirty. Be sure to bring a roll of paper towels and napkins. A new coffee pot w/o a chipped spout would have been nice.
Walk over to the infamous Bert's Bar and enjoy all you can eat fishfry on Friday night. Drive to Palm Island and have Oysters on the 1/2 Shell for $6 on Saturday evening at the Waterfront. Roam around all the shops. Sandals, shorts & tank shirts or tees are the dress code!

Matlacha is a piece of old Florida, en route to Pine Island to the West of Fort Myers. Its majors on fishing and the Bridgewater Inn is geared primarily towards fishermen. It sits on the water, set on piles driven into the sea bed and the water laps virtually up to the bedroom door. The views are tremendous - except for the drawbridge, which creates some noise. The local eateries are low key and offer good value, but beware of the dusk insects - mosquitoes and the local 'no-see-ems.' The hotel has only 7 rooms; ours was of the quaint but comfortable variety. Management was friendly. The two nights here made a pleasant contrast with the chain hotels we used on the rest of the trip.
