I booked this hotel through Shearings and on a drive yourself basis. The booking was easy and straightforward and at a good price.I booked myself and my wife and two friends in on a 3 night h/b basis. We arrived at the hotel and first impressions were good, it is easily accessible from the A1 and is a well refurbished old coaching inn with a large car park. On entering we were greeted by the smart Reception staff and immediately felt at ease, they were friendly, polite and very helpful. We had booked a Superior room ( an upgrade available on booking) and were immediately pleased with what we saw, it was situated on the first floor at the front of the hotel and even though there is a busy road not so far away, the double glazing kept the noise out. The room was of an excellent size and had everything you would normally get in a four star hotel, the bed was large and comfortable. Downstairs the hotel has an excellent leisure section, small but attractive pool, steam room and sauna, and a fantastic hot tub type whirlpool.
The dining room was light and airy and tables well spaced out. The menus for evening meal were interesting, and the restaurant staff again kept up the same excellent and friendly service, though the meals could do with improvement. The size and quality of the food was small and basic, which for the cost of the break considering all factors made them just acceptable, this was the only area our party found disappointing. The breakfast in the morning though was excellent and of different quality, obviously budgets hit the evening meal.
The hotel had entertainment, this consisted of aged cabaret acts though they were very competent and entertaining.
Overall this hotel is an excellent choice for a short break, the hotel is spotlessly clean and a fantastic location for Beamish and Durham which we visited, we would love to stay here again.

Room Tip: The Superior rooms are well worth the extra

Thank you for posting your review. I am sorry to hear that you felt the hotel is not suitable for guests with disabilities. As we are an old coaching hotel this retains the charm and character of the hotel, however the entrance to The Windlestone Suite is wheelchair accessible. Toiletries are always available from reception on request.
I do hope you enjoy further breaks with Bay Hotels.

We stayed here for 3 nights on a half board deal. The hotel is in coaching inn style with plenty of parking and although on a busy road the rooms are double glazed and we weren't disturbed at all. Our room was basic but clean, tea and coffee making kit, plenty of storage. It would be good to have some instructions on how the TV works - 2 remotes, a bit complicated for me. The bathroom was adequate but clean. The staff were very welcoming although I got the impression sometimes that they were a little rushed and a trifle curt. The choice of meals was good, although serving starters on a SAUCER does not make them look larger! A square of pate the size of a matchbox and 2 small biscuits isn't that great. I found the portions to be rather meagre and I do not have a huge appetite. The vegetables sometimes seemed as if they had been cooked a long time prior to service. Having said that, the meals were palatable and we enjoyed our choices. The entertainment on Friday evening was fine and the singer was very good. There is a pool indoors which looks good although we didn't get time to use it. To sum up, this is a nice place for a weekend stay, loads of things to do in the area, and you get what you pay for. We paid a very reasonable price for our stay.

Room Tip: We had ground floor rooms at the side which were fine.

We enjoyed a five day coach trip with Shearing's to this hotel on the 3rd to 7th June. We had a lovely big basic room which was kept clean and tidy. The food was very good and plentiful. We also made use of the gym, spa and pool which was a bonus. The entertainment in the evenings was also excellent, however it's such a shame that very few of the hotel guests stayed for this! We went on the coach trip to Beamish Open Air Museum and Crook Hall & Gardens (excellent). All in all a very welcome break.

We where heading down for a nite out and decided to book a hotel this was the first hotel we came across so just booked it, lovely from the outside which is a good first impression, headed inside then booked 2 double rooms for the nite, receptionist was very nice and the gentleman that was on aswell, we booked for breakfast in the morning, then went to our rooms, the hotel was very clean our room was lovely bed was really comfortable, good sized room with plenty of drawers plus wardrobe, bathroom was immaculate it was nice to see a whiter than white shower curtain.
If we had stayed longer a could have written more about this hotel but we only checked in for one nite left about 10am following morning.
The only thing a didn't like was the room we was in did have a connecting door so you could hear the other guests very clearly.
A would defo stay here again but for longer next time, as they do have a did have entertainment on the nite we arrived, they also have leisure facility's which we never got the chance to use.

Room Tip: Don't get a connecting room.

I had a lovely 4 night break at this hotel through Shearings. It's not cutting edge modern, more sort of well maintained vintage which I prefer and is very in vogue anyway! The staff were super friendly and genuinely welcomed any queries. I especially loved the fitness area because it was clean and had a bit of everything. The pool was big enough to get a good swim in, the steam room perfect for a deep cleanse, the gym had enough machinery to get get a good workout and a tv to watch while you're doing it and the Jacuzzi had the strongest bubble effect I have ever experienced! I was in there every day and it sparked of a health kick when I got home. Every meal was enjoyable and served really quickly considering the amount of people there. Great country walks nearby if you walk to the other side of the village. This isn't a five star hotel but it is incredibly good value for money and probably a lot friendlier :)

Room Tip: I stayed in April and the heating wasn't on in the rooms at night. It's probably the time o...

Don'teat here, they can't even do a cheese and onion toastiie, they put 3 slices of bred together and put a little cheese in with a silly amount of onion then warmed it threw it on a plate with some crisps and pepper slices. It was a disgrace to even call it food. This was once called the Rushyford
arms hotel with outstanding food, it is now a shadow of it's former self. Don't forget to check your bill as I was charged for something I did not have.

Thank you for letter and I would like to take the time to offer you a response. I read your initial views on the quality of our bar food with some regret. Only quality food is sent out of the kitchen and we apologise that you found this not to be the case last Sunday. I should point out that had you raised your concerns at the time we would have gladly rectified the problem. On looking at our records you were only charged for the cheese toasties.
