Owner description: Magnificent Edwardian gardens flowing from grand vistas to intimate spaces overlooked by a large mansion Dyffryn Gardens are an exceptional example of Edwardian garden design. Covering more than 55 acres they feature a stunning collection of intimate garden rooms including a rose garden, Pompeian garden and several ponds. The enormous great lawn is bordered by seasonal bedding and a croquet lawn. There is also a large glasshouse, statuary collection, and arboretum featuring trees from all over the world. Designed by eminent landscape architect Thomas Mawson in 1906, the gardens are the early 20th-century vision of coal magnate John Cory and his son Reginald. Within the gardens, Dyffryn House, a grand Victorian mansion overlooks the key aspects of the gardens. Parts of the ground and first floors have been restored and are unfurnished.

“Restoration is under way......”

Good to see that the old house and gardens are now receiving some loving care. The gardens are full of beautiful spring flowers and give a tranquil ambiance. Good to see that the house, which had been neglected by the former County Council and limited support from the Vale of Glamorgan, is now beginning to reap the benefit of lottery funding - and has great potential for the future.

“Needs a lot of TLC”
Reviewed April 25, 2014

I visited Dyffryn Gardens especially to see the arboretum and its collection of champion trees. I was very disappointed. There is no leaflet or guide to help find these trees. The only way is by looking for the small green labels on the trees themselves.
The arboretum, which must be about a third of the entire gardens is in very poor condition and very overgrown to the extent that it is not possible to get anywhere near some trees without wading through brambles or heavy undergrowth.
There is a little evidence of clearance work being undertaken with some piles of rubbish left lying around.
I saw several fallen trees which need to be attended to and this all contributes to a neglected air

“Work in progress! ”
Reviewed April 19, 2014 via mobile

Really lovely afternoon out! The gardens are beautiful and some rooms of the house are lovely! However the house is still very much a work in progress. Extensive renovations are on going but it is being beautifully done. A lovely afternoon out.

“Easter Visit”
Reviewed April 14, 2014

What an excellent experience!

Friendly, attentive and knowledgeable staff only served to enhanced the visit, which was the first for my daughter and I to Dyffryn.

The weather was excellent, and this was a bonus, but children were well looked after (which is the norm for most National Trust properties).

Visits like this make the NT membership well worth it!

“Lovely Gardens - very tranquil!”
Reviewed April 9, 2014 via mobile

Visited Dyffryn Gardens & house (now part of the National Trust) last Friday as 'D' on our A-Z National Trust Family Challenge! We had a lovely couple of hours meandering around the variety of spaces in the Gardens and vowed to return in the summer with our cricket set & a picnic!

We went in the House and although enjoyed learning about the Cory family, felt a feeling of sadness as feels a little unloved. But great that the NT now have it in their portfolio & can weave their magic on it!
