Review of Dyffryn Gardens

Dyffryn Gardens

Attraction details
Owner description: Magnificent Edwardian gardens flowing from grand vistas to intimate spaces overlooked by a large mansion Dyffryn Gardens are an exceptional example of Edwardian garden design. Covering more than 55 acres they feature a stunning collection of intimate garden rooms including a rose garden, Pompeian garden and several ponds. The enormous great lawn is bordered by seasonal bedding and a croquet lawn. There is also a large glasshouse, statuary collection, and arboretum featuring trees from all over the world. Designed by eminent landscape architect Thomas Mawson in 1906, the gardens are the early 20th-century vision of coal magnate John Cory and his son Reginald. Within the gardens, Dyffryn House, a grand Victorian mansion overlooks the key aspects of the gardens. Parts of the ground and first floors have been restored and are unfurnished.

“A lovely place”

This is a lovely place to visit and there are various events going on there at different times of the year. Not far from Cardiff and Cardiff Wales Airport.

“Beautiful, tranquil setting”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 10, 2012

This is a fantastic place with a lovely calm atmosphere. The garden is divided into "rooms" which all have their own character and delightful charm. The herbaceous border is my favourite, and the aboretum is also great for a wander. The local council is struggling with its upkeep at the moment, but the NT are due to take over in January next year, so it will surely benefit from more staff and better organisation. The cafe is pretty grim, could do with a NT makeover without a doubt. Well worth a visit - bring a picnic and spend a few hours wandering. The house is also being worked on and will be open at some time in the future.

“Beautiful formal gardens”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 30, 2012

We set out for Dyffryn Gardens based on its write-up in the National Trust Handbook only to find that it is not yet an NT property. As a result we had to pay the £7 entrance fee, be that as it may, we still had a very nice time. The gardens were virtually empty at 11.00 on a Sunday and wandering about in the sunshine we able to imagine the place as a private home. The gardens are wonderfully varied: a magnificent catus collection, a well tended kitchen garden and some imaginatively planted gardens rooms are the prelude to the real highlight of the formal lawns and water features laid out in front of the house. We did use the cafe, which I think will benefit from being run by the NT. My wife described the experience as 'service with a snarl, but that was the only sour note in the whole visit. We look forward to retrning in a couple of years to see what changes the restoration project has wrought.

“Work in progress”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 27, 2012

This is an amazing garden being restored to its old grandeur, together with an arboretum within the ground. The restored glasshouses hold a great cacti collectiond and there is some colourful island bedding but the real joy are the restored areas within the larger whole. There is also a small exhibition showing before and after photos of the restored atreas and plans for the future. If I lived nearer I'd join the Friends! If you have any interest in gardens you will love this one. Due to be taken over by the NT later this year.
There is also a small shop and plant sales-extremely good value (NT please note!)

“A very pleasant experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 21, 2012

I have just visited Dyffryn Gardens near Cardiff (not Fishguard) with an elderly relative and we both enjoyed it very much and would like to return at other times of the year. We were offered the use of a complimentary wheelchair and as a result were able to see most of the gardens using the wheelchair route on the map. Some of the small gardens are only accessed by steps but there is plenty to see otherwise and lots of seats. I look forward to being able to see inside the house when it is opened. The gift shop, also selling fresh vegetables from the kitchen garden and plants was well stocked and staff polite and helpful. We wished we'd brought a picnic, partly because the grounds were so lovely but also because the queue for the tearooms was so slow that we decided not to bother and went elsewhere to eat.
