“Can't recommend Joe highly enough.”
Reviewed August 28, 2013

We visited Marco for the month of August and arranged to spend 1/2 day fishing with Captain Joe on his boat Unreel early in our stay.

We have been on many fishing charters over the years, and I can say without hesitation that I have not come across such an experienced, helpful, entertaining and honest captain. On our first trip we were about half an hour out from dock when Joe cut the engines, and came to speak to us. The sea was pretty rough (though it was a beautiful bright day) and he felt it was only going to get rougher, so it was his recommendation that we abandon the trip and try again another day. We took his advice and returned a few days later.

We were due to head out ~14-15 miles into the Gulf in search of Grouper, but as we left the Marco river, Joe saw large numbers of birds circling. We made a bee line for the birds, who were feeding frantically on large bait balls. These fish were also being assaulted from below, by Spanish Mackerel. Joe, and his helpful mate Michael set up the rods to troll for these fish and off we went. Some of the fish we caught Joe said were as big as any he had seen. After an hour of so we had as many fish in the cooler as we could eat, so all further fish were released.

Everyone had a great time (and a fantastic lunch a the Sandbar who cooked some of the fish Michael has so expertly cleaned for us). We booked another trip with Joe later in our holiday, unfortunately the weather again intervened and Joe emailed me first thing in the morning to call the trip off - a great disappointment, but another example of Joe putting the safety and comfort of his clients ahead of his own financial well being.

The bottom line is, if you are visiting the Marco area and are looking for a fishing charter, look no further than Joe.

“Awsome fishing”
Reviewed August 23, 2013

Me and my friend had plans to go with Captain Joe for a 3/4 day but my friend was sick that morning and I decided to go by myself. Joe had no problems changing from a 3/4 day to a half day to fit my needs when I showed up, he even said I could just go back if I did not feel like fishing without my friend. Joe is an extremely friendly person and a cool guy to hang out with and at no point did I regret going by myself, he is full of fun stories and good humor. At first we were in unfavorable fishing conditions due to the tide, however Captain Joe was able to pinpoint and location where I would catch some grouper and the action was nonstop. I highly recommend Captain Joe as a guide. I am a homeowner in Marco and an avid fisherman and I will definitely use Joe's services again.

“Great fun fishing!”
Reviewed August 14, 2013

Captain Joe had us reeling fish in on the first hook of the day! He was extremely knowledgeable about the fish, their environment, and their locations. Very personable and able to provide the right degree of help to this inexperienced family of four. Our 12 year-old had little interest prior to our trip, but Captain Joe helped him have a great time and bring in lots of fish. He was genuinely concerned for our comfort and enjoyment. His 29 ft, center console boat didn't have a lot of frills, but had more than enough room for us and was a great platform for fishing. He even had a cooler for our drinks. We had a great 4+ hours and came back with enough fish for three days of meals. Capt. Joe expertly filleted them for us and they were absolutely delicious. Highly recommend. We are Marriott Vacation Club owners and try to come to Marco Island yearly. So glad to have met Capt. Joe, we will call him again when we are in town.

“Capt Joe knows!”
Reviewed July 25, 2013 via mobile

Our family of 4 (2 adults, a 10yr & 12yr old) took this tour and really had a great time. Capt Joe knew all the best fishing spots, we couldn't pull the fish in fast enough! He was very helpful with our girls. If you don't know how to fish, he will help you! We shipped most of our take home, but saved enough to bring it to a local restaurant and have it prepared the same afternoon. Delicious!! He was more than fair with the pricing, we booked a 3/4 day trip, ended up being half day just because we were worn out, and he refunded part of the fee. The boat seemed small at first, but really, it's adequate for fishing. Seemed about the standard size for private charters in the area. One suggestion, take something for motion sickness before you go!! You'll be glad you did.... Thanks Capt Joe!!

“Tropical Storm Andrea”
Reviewed June 14, 2013

Originally, we were scheduled to go out fishing with Joe the day when Tropical Storm Andrea was scheduled to hit. In what we had hoped was a bit of good luck, he was able to get us out a day earlier, hoping to avoid any bad weather. Unfortunately, after driving the boat out a couple miles or so and getting repeatedly pounded by large waves and seeing ominous dark clouds on the horizon in the direction we were headed, he stopped the boat and gave us the option to continue through the storm (which he was willing to do) or head back. Given the circumstances, he said many charter boats would've just docked somewhere closer to shore and charged full price for very little chances of catching any fish -- in good conscience, he didn't want to screw us over. After turning around and heading back to the dock, Joe refused to take any money from us for the gas/ bait/ his time. While we didn't get to fish, Joe was a pleasure to hang out with and seemed like a genuinely good guy who loves his job. We'll definitely book him again when we're back in Marco.
