We stayed here with family (our kids and grandkids). Although we were on a high floor, we probably had the poorest view on the floor since we were furthest away from the ocean. The rooms are nice and the balcony is huge - biggest we have seen at any hotel or Marriott Vacation Club. We like the size of the complex as it never felt crowded. The pools are good and the bar/cafe was good.

Room Tip: Request an oceanfront view or as close to the ocean as possible on a high floor. My first priority...

My family of 4 just returned from our 2nd stay at the Crystal Shores in 4 years & are already talking about returning again in 2 years. If rating the resort itself, we would give it a 5...absolutely love this place…rooms are spacious, clean, views are to die for, all staff encountered were very friendly & helpful & would return in a heartbeat. We love the resort so much my husband & I talked about ownership & since our room was not ready upon arrival, we visited the sales office immediately to see what we could find out about the ownership process. Since it was mid-day Saturday, the sales receptionist told us she had no one available to speak with at that time, so we promised to return during the week before our departure. The thought of ownership quickly changed after hitting the beach on Sunday & the reason for my "3" rating. We rented out 4 chairs & 2 umbrellas at a cost of $170 for the week. Not long after sitting on the beach we noticed something we had not noticed on our first visit to the resort….the beach was heavily occupied by non-resort beach goers. We were extremely disappointed to learn that Marriott sold out its owners & guests by making a deal with the city for a bigger piece of the real estate pie by allowing public access to the beach through their resort back in 2009. Since this had happened just prior to our last visit, it was not a noticeable issue, but fast forward 4 years & now it appears to be very popular. First off, half the parking lot which is small to begin with is now used for public parking at a charge of $10 per day. Secondly, not once did we go to the beach to utilize our chairs & not find public visitors sitting directly at our feet. If the Marriott was going to allow this, they should have stated public visitors need to sit behind resort chair set up. Also, we had a view of the beach from our room & majority of times when we left our chairs to go up to our room for brief periods, we could see in the 10 minute walk from beach to room people jumped right into our pricey chairs when we left. We had to have the Marco Island Watersports staff “evict” public users from our very expensive seats several times during our stay. In addition, security presence at the resort is much more prevalent since public users literally have to walk down the side of the resort to access the beach…we even witnessed 2 people getting kicked off property because they wandered into resort areas. And timeshare users are now required to wear colorful rubber bracelets which is a bit of a pain to identify themselves to resort staff & security as belonging on site because in the past public users were caught using the resort pools. Overall, our opinion is that the Marriott did a great disservice to its owners & paying guests by allowing public beach access. The price to stay at the resort is not cheap by any means & therefore, I should not have to be inconvenienced in any of the ways described above during my stay because of their greed. We will return in the future, but will never consider ownership.

Thank you for taking the time to share your review of Marriott's Crystal Shores. We are happy to hear you enjoyed the resort but disappointed the public beach access impacted your stay. In Florida all beaches are public and cannot be restricted to resort guests. Marco Island also requires beachfront resorts to provide public access to the beach. While we cannot change the laws regarding public beach access, we will advise the beach vendor to be more diligent in not allowing non-paying guests to use the rented chairs and umbrellas.

First of all, let me respond to the review regarding coolers. We too were very surprised by the policy of not permitting coolers at the pool. Our family has stayed at many MVC and never were told to get rid of our cooler. We also use the cooler to bring our lunch, water, etc...we do not bring alcohol. In discussing this issue with the MVC at Crystal Shores, it was apparent that this was a controversial issue. I believe Marriott at Crystal Shores needs to reevaluate this policy since many of us do not want to spend excessive amounts of money for food when on vacation.

Now to the good stuff....Crystal Shores is very quiet and peaceful. Construction for completion of the project is scheduled for later in the year. The nice thing about Crystal Shores was that there was no traffic or congestion. It truly is a paradise and the beach is absolutely gorgeous. You can easily walk to the Marriott hotel via beach or street and shop or have a snack. The Marco Island Marriott is stunning to say the least, and I have been at many Marriotts.

Probably the best part of Crystal Shores was the wonderful staff. The loss prevention staff was excellent as well as the activities staff. The activities staff (especially Matt) was so professional and accommodating. They all greeted you no matter where you were and made you feel like familly.

Crystal Shores had many complimentary activities unlike other MVCs we have been at...I especially enjoyed the coffee tasting event.

We will definitely put Crystal Shores on our list.

Room Tip: All rooms have gulfview....very beautiful...my new favorite MVC

We stayed in a 2 bedroom villa which was very comfortable, nicely appointed and had a fully equipped kitchen. There were 2 balconies - one was quite large off the main living area (large enough for 2 chaise lounges and a table with 4 chairs with plenty of room to spare) and another smaller one off of the master bedroom. The villa itself, the grounds and the beach were all extremely clean and well kept. The 2 pools were small but were perfectly fine. The only complaint I have is the poolside service was non-existent. On a rare occasion you might be able to find someone but we ended up going upstairs to STILTS (the on-site bar/grille) and ordering at the bar. We had to keep going back & forth to check to see if our food/drinks were ready. They just didn't seem equipped to handle poolside service.

First some background. We own multiple weeks of Marriott Vacation Club Properties for the past 7 years. This is the 5th different vacation club property we have stayed at around the world. Thus we traded into the property rather than rent for the $500 to $600 per night. If we had rented outright the review would have been below average since the "value" received for $3500 to $4000+ outlay per week would not have been worth the experience.

There are positives and negatives to our experience at crystal shores in Marco Island, though the negatives outweigh dragged the rating to just average and in our opinion not to the standards of a marriott vacation club property.

First the positives.
Marco island had One of the nicest beaches we have been to.
Short walk to the beach.
Large balcony with a view of the Gulf of Mexico. Two chaise cushioned lounges and table with chairs
Great sunsets
Kitchen is very nice with stainless updated appliances.
7/11 across the street (3min walk) with reasonable prices for basics.
Staff was sincere in their intention to help or just say hello. The key here is they were sincere no just trained to be nice.

Negatives

1)The reason why we purchased Marriott timeshares is we can vacation in a very cost effective manner. This goes beyond spreading the cost of lodging over time ( we prepay upfront and amortize the cost based the implied rental rates we would have paid over time ) we enjoy the ability to bring coolers of food and beverages to the pool which is significantly more cost effective than buying food and beverages at the on site restaurant(s). Example a draft domestic beer at the onsite restaurant is $6.00 (plastic cup). I can buy a case (24 cans) of coors light at the 7/11 across the street for $17.99. You figure out the math, it is pretty simple. Here is the problem. NO COOLERS ALLOWED AT THE POOLS. No Marriott vacation club property we have ever stayed at previously has this policy. Hotels have no carry in policy at their pools for the obvious reason. They make a lot of money off food and liquor. This policy alone will result in us not coming back or recommending the property to others. If you rent a cabana at poolside for $50 per day you can bring coolers. I will not pay $50 for the right to bring a cooler I asked management why this rule was in place. The answer revolved of local floridians renting two bedroom unit with a dozen people in it and bringing a multiple large coolers to the pool. This led to other issues as you can imagine. My response was that my family and other responsible owners were being penalized by a few who abused the privledge. Staff should police those who are impinging on the rights of others. The inability to bring coolers to the pool leaves you with an option to purchase beverages and food from Stilts restaurant. The only onsite option to purchase food and beverages conveniently near the pool. ( note there is a market place near the check in desk to purchase some basics but at higher prices than the grocery store.)

2) onsite restaurant(STILTS) is very expensive for what you get. I.e convenience. They have a happy hour from 2 to 5 but happy hour offerings are limited in what they offer.

3) parking is limited and crystal shores sell beach parking to people not staying at the resort. We had issues finding a close parking spot during peak beach hours if we had to run to the store. Etc.

4)no ceiling fans in the villas made sleeping uncomfortable on some nights.

5) chairs on the beach are not provided which is typical at many reports but the fee of $32 per day for two uncomfortable
Chase lounges and small umbrella was unreasonable in my opinion

6)door to villa shuts quickly and is very heavy. Can be scary and possibly harmful if you have small kids.

7) master bedroom is small by Marriott vac club standards. Poor storage options for your clothes

Note one other ominous sign for this resort is there was a sign as you got off/on the elevator to and from the villas
Paraphrasing " no alcoholic beverages past this point unless purchased from the market place ( the onsite mini grocery).
The resort management is saying no alcohol unless it is in your room. If this was a hotel that makes sense but for a timeshare where you are paying for a piece of the resort (factional ownership) or utilizing the new destination points program through MVCI this is a deal killer. Cost effective vacations are cornerstone of the timeshare business model, crystal shores home ownership association , resort management and mvci management ( a percentage of the units are in a land trust administered by MVCI) needs to re-evaluate . .

I stayed here with my family back in March of this year. The hotel itself is very nice, but I found its layout extremely odd. The pools are are also nice, the north one more than the other. We stayed in a 2 bedroom unit which was great. It was equipped with everything you would need for your stay. Furthermore, the unit was furnished with upscale furniture, appliances, etc. The unit was spotless, and very comfortable. Another great thing is that the beach is just a very short walk away. The restaurant was also good, but a bit pricy for burgers and chicken wings. I also was not impressed with the way the management handled a small situation I encountered. It sucks when the management of a hotel like this treats you as if you are burdening them with your request. Anyways, not a big deal and definetely look forward to saying here again.

Room Tip: Well, an ocean view (if you can afford it) would be nice.

Great service. Great beach. Above average rooms. Below average bed quality. Would be 5 stars with a kids' pool, dedicated child amusement area and more comfortable beds and pillows. Broader menu and less pricey drinks would help as well.
