“Facility nice, people not so much”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 10, 2013

Silver Sands is a nice resort located on the beach. The pool is nice and the beach, well, it's Longboat Key! The people aspect of the trip could have been better. After a sleepless first night due to getting in late and having a room close to the main road, I asked to be moved for my remaining two nights. It was clear to me that I was greatly troubling the office person with my request. She proceeded to let me know she had been out for two days and had dozens of emails to deal with.

I was always taught customers in front of you should get highest priority. As stated, she did not seem interested that I did not care for the room and wanted to be moved. She even went as far as telling the management company on the phone that, "He wants to be moved because of noise, yada, yada, yada." I was three feet way from her during this conversation. Other than that and the fact I had to pay an additional $25 insurance fee, I had a relaxing visit in the nicely decorated, comfortable room.

I am glad I did not expect much from the facility management, because I would have been truly disappointed.

Room Tip: Room 217 is VERY close to the main road down the Key = noisy!

RVA and our affiliated properties pride ourselves on our customer service and putting our customers and their needs first, so to hear that this guest was not satisfied with that portion of their stay was disappointing. A member of our Management Team has reached out to offer this guest the appropriate apology.

My husband and I had planned on visiting this resort for a romantic getaway from the kids. Unfortunatley my father, who would be responsible for watching our 3 children, needed emergency surgery. I called three days before the trip to cancel (or reschedule), but was told we would still forfeit our $190 deposit because we hadn't given 2 weeks notice. I explained this was a medical emergency, and they didn't budge. Whether we cancelled or rescheduled, the fee stood. Needless to say, we didn't...NOR WILL WE EVER...stay at this resort.

While we understand this guest's circumstances, RVA and it's affiliated properties offer a cancellation policy that is typical within the travel industry. We also offer elective travel insurance with each booking to cover situations such as these. We encourage all guests to consider the possibility of unforeseen circumstances surrounding their travels when deciding to elect or decline travel insurance - whether booking with our organization or another.

The location couldn't be better for a family with children. The pool and beach are "right there".
it was clean and our room was adequate but nothing special. The bathrooms could use some updating and the kitchenware was minimal for families who cook while on vacation. Our king size mattress was THE WORST mattress ever and my back is still aching from it. The owner could really spend some bucks there and replace it. It is awkward walking into the bedrooms from outside but to have the ocean in you living room/kitchen makes it o.k. Would probably stay there again only if I couldn't find something better. They were replacing a tv in the bedroom when we arrived and that could have been planned better. Like offseason! They left drywall dust in our room and forgot to clean it the first day. The staff were pleasant. We had a great time with our family there and overall it was positive experience.

Room Tip: Look around first!

The Silver Sands is a pleasant and reasonably priced, but "bare bones" motel with few amenities. There is no restaurant on the premises, no gym, no shops, no safe in the room. There is a miniature golf course and a pool and a lovely beachfront where I enjoyed watching the spectacular sunsets! My room was adequate, but small and not very attractive. It would have been nice to have some carpets on the bare floors. The staff is friendly and helpful - especially the lady at the front desk who helped me with my luggage. You really need a car to get anywhere, except, perhaps, to Harry's which you can walk to for a decent, if rather expensive, breakfast!

This is a relatively small yet very comfortable and welcoming place. It is right on Gulf, with pool, comfortable rooms, and friendly staff. As a nearby resident and long time visitor to Longboat, we went with my brother who had found this little gem. On the north end of the island, this clean and well maintained property was a great value. It would be great for families who want both a nice pool and direct access to a BEAUTIFUL beach. I know that they have 1 & 2 bedroom condos, as well as hotel style rooms. It was quiet, and very restful. It is not a full service hotel, so you either cook yourself or can go out to a number of nearby restaurants of all varieties. The only reason I did not rate the sleep comfort higher was that I got the pull out, which was uncomfortable.

Room Tip: First floor with Lanai next to pool is great for both pool and beach access

At first glance this was a decent place and the location was good; however our stay began to go off course shortly after arrival.

When booking we were told of a $25 insurance fee and we were told we could refuse the fee, period no questions asked. We paid a higher price when booking and were told our room would be right at the beach and the guy even added it was the best room at the resort. We picked up our packet and keys from the late check in box (the office was closed because we arrived at 5:45 pm) and quickly noticed the number on the keys did not match the number on our paperwork. So we tried the keys on the room indicated in our paperwork however they didn't unlock the door. So we tried the room right under that, the one the keys indicated, and of course the door opened. When we stepped in we could quickly see a computer, dirty socks, blankets scattered around, and half eaten food on the kitchen counter... we had just unlocked the door to someone elses room, AWKWARD. We found some of the housekeeping staff and they were friendly and apologetic and quickly get us the keys to the room indicated in our paperwork.

So we walk upstairs to get to the room, the one we were told was the best at the resort (laughable), and get into the front door noticing you walk right into the first bedroom. So this means any sand you bring in mainly goes onto whoevers bedroom floor AND if other people in your party want to go out late, you better stay in the front door bedroom or you will wake up the people sleeping. We had to move the living room furniture so we could watch a movie, the beds weren't comfortable, and I (standing at 5'5") felt like a giant in the tiny bathrooms. This room was just not set up properly.

The room appeared to be clean however as soon as we got there we were sliding around on the sandy floor... now it is the beach so we could let that go until we moved the couch so that we could watch a movie and there was so much dirt, sand, chips, and cookies on the floor... it was disgusting.

When we went to the office the next morning to sign the papers for the bill and we noticed a $25 fee added. The woman stated, apathetically, that the fee could be refused however they would hold $250 on our credit card and the $250 would be refunded ONLY after the housekeeping crew inspected the room. So obviously this place is so petty they will scam you out of $25 even if they have to lie about it at booking. She also said nothing about the key situation but maybe our expectations of this place and staff were simply too high.

There are so many other places to stay on the key so don't waste your time or money here.

Stayed at the Silver Sands over Easter weekend. The condos look like they have been recently updated and are super-clean and overall very nice.

Highlights of this place are the location on the beach and proximity to Anna Maria Island and St. Armand's Circle.

We paid a premium for a small room given the holiday weekend but it was clean, comfortable and nicely decorated. Included a mini fridge and microwave, which was nice.

Our room had connecting doors to the condos directly to the left and right of us. The connecting doors would be convenient if you rented a neighboring large condo and needed extra space; however, lacked privacy as the kids next door attempted to open the connecting doors a few times and we could hear the televisions & general conversations of our neighbors.

Next time would elect for the full size condo as they are much larger and included screened in patios...more privacy.

The pool at this place is very nice. We hoped to use it more but I have to say that the constant noise volume from the kids made it tough to relax (literally all day). No fault of the hotel but definitely lots of children having a great time. Could of been related to timing around Spring Break...

Spent most of our time at the beach for peace and quiet. Really enjoyed the beach chairs and lovely beach (a highlight)!

Overall great place for families. Would recommend going for the full size condo. If you are looking for a romantic getaway, probably not the place to go.
