“Super condo/location/price”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 22, 2013

What a great deal! We love the gulf coast and frequent the area a lot. We have stayed at many different hotels in the area and most are old, so so and overpriced. Unit 245 at this site has it all. A caring owner, a very nicely remodeled unit that is clean, large, modernized, very reasonably priced for what you get and best of all, it has a spectacular view. The place is properly managed by on site staff, the premises well kept and everyone we encountered was friendly. Not one single complaint about our entire stay, just plenty of good memories. Well, there is one complaint, we wish we had been able to find out about the place sooner so we could have been staying here instead of so so motels that pale in comparison to this place. Great stay, great price, great memories. What more could you ask for in a beach visit!

Room Tip: Definetly try to rent #245.

I really don't recommend-stuck in the 80s-90s decor. Spend a little more for a different hotel/condo for a clean
Pros
Right on the beach!

Cons
OLD! Noisy a/c. Loud Noisy. Lots of people smoking cigarettes and just throwing them in the grass. No housekeeping on Sunday. No beach chairs.

Strong mildew smell in room. Paid for two nights at check in. Had to check out after first night. Told the front desk about the problem, said they would tell the manager. We were never contacted. No offer of a refund.

We've been going to The Diplomat on Long Boat Key in Florida for our Mother & Daughter Girls' Week-At-The-Beach for 22 years now ... and counting. We hope we're still going there 20 more years from now!

The property is extremely well taken care of and nicely landscaped, the pool is always clean and well-maintained, and it sits on a beautiful, wide stretch of beach. Every room is gulf-front. There's a stretch of lush grass between the rooms and the beach with lots of lawn furniture - plenty of chaise lounges and tables & chairs along with several covered picnic table areas. There are also lots of lounge chairs around the pool, along with several tables with umbrellas for pool-side lunch or getting out of the sun.

We stay in two connecting-rooms on the ground floor ( 230 & 231, I think ). One room has a large living area with plenty of comfortable seating, a kitchen stocked with everything you'd need, a dining room that seats 6, and a separate bedroom with a king bed and bathroom. The other room has two queen beds, lots of dresser storage, comfortable chairs, a little desk/writing area, and it's own bathroom. Both rooms have very large closets. The unit owners replace the furniture periodically, so it never looks worn. Last year the connecting bedroom unit had new furniture ... very pretty white cottage-style. This last year the king bedroom had brand new furniture ... rich-looking dark brown rattan - along with new bedding and newly painted walls.

We've rarely had a problem of any kind, but the management has always been responsive to the very few minor issues we've encountered over the years.

The beach and the water are beautiful. Every other year or so we get lucky and there are tide pools ... we set up our beach chairs in the shallow water ( some of us forgo the chair and just sit on the sandy bottom! ) and hang out in the warm water all day. It doesn't get any more relaxing than that. Also if you're lucky - early morning and again in the afternoon - you'll get to see the dolphins swimming and eating and playing. An extra special treat is when you're in the water and see them swimming just yards beyond you!

The sunsets on the Gulf are awesome. Every night, about 15 or 20 minutes before sunset, everyone gathers on the beach with their cameras. There may be lots of folks on the beach, but you'd never know it ... everyone is quietly enjoying the gorgeous colors as the sun sinks over the water. Between the five of us we've taken hundreds of spectacular sunset photos over those 22 years.

We rarely tear ourselves away from the beach and we eat dinner in all but one night ( there's a Publix grocery store a few minutes away where we stock up before we check in ), however, for those who like some non-beach/non-room time or prefer dinners out, there are some nice restaurants within decent driving distance. Also, a short ride away, is great shopping and more restaurants on St Arman's Circle. And then just a few minutes further is downtown Sarasota Main Street, with even more shopping and restaurants.

This is not a "resort". No putting on a cover-up to to pass through a formal lobby, or waiting on an elevator, or long walks down a chilly corridor to get to your room ... just open your door, or look out the large picture-windows, and it's right there in front of you. The Diplomat is a simple old-style gulf-front mom & pop hotel on a beautiful stretch of quiet gulf-front beach ... the perfect place for a laid-back getaway!!

Room Tip: Ask for a ground level room ... the railings on the balcony/walkway in front of the 2nd floor rooms...

For the last 21 years me, my sisters and our mom have been having a girls only getaway weekend and all but a couple of years we've come to The Diplomat - we always stay in the same room and so love this place - it is our home away from home!

Room Tip: Very laid back - every room has a great view of the gulf.

We stayed in 239 on corner. Quiet. Relaxing. Pool is great. When we go to the beach, we stay on the beach. If you are like this, this is the place for you. Plenty of great places to eat. Make sure you eat at the Beach House, Salty Dog, and Lazy Lobster. Staff is very nice. Makes you feel at home. Free dvd rentals in office. Would easily recommend.

It had a very good pool that was a good thing, the ocean view was stunning. One thing is that it is a little dated. It doesn't look very nice from the outside but when you get in it's nice. The beach is super nice and quiet. It's quite close to the publix and cvs pharmacy. Restaurants are pretty close as well
