“Easy access from Interstate”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 12, 2014 via mobile

I had the bbq beef. Instead of brisket, it was a eye of round roast. Served a large serving. Completely lean with no fat or gristle. I personally prefer brisket, but this was a nice change.
This is easy to get to from I-20. You turn right at Lowe's. The service was good and the waitress friendly They offer both hot and sweet sauce. The slaw and beans were both sweet and I liked that. The building looks relatively new and is decorated with deer heads.
I would definitely recommend this to a friend that was looking for bbq.

“Nice Facility, Okay Food, Poor Service”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 8, 2014 via mobile

Four of us driving from Houston to Orlando stopped at Big Wood BBQ & Grill for lunch on our second day of driving, a Saturday. It's easy to find, just pop off the East I-10 at Exit 283 and go south on 129 about .8 miles to 72nd St. As you near 72nd, you'll see the big red roof up the rise on the right (west).

Now you know how to get there, the question is, should you go there. If you are not in a hurry, I suppose so, especially if you're tired of the fast food restaurants (all of which I do like). But the food and service are just okay.

Big Wood BBQ & Grill is large, fairly new, and very clean--perhaps too tidy for a BBQ place. High up, the walls are lined with mounted deer heads, mountain goat, turkeys and other creatures. They are interesting.

I rated Big Wood BBQ & Grill a 3 for food and service, however service was really a 2. Three of us had the baby back ribs, and one had smoked turkey. Two of us found the ribs to be a bit bland and a tad too soft. They had little flavor and no zing. It seemed as if they were smoked without a rub. My wife thought the ribs were very good, and the turkey was reported as good.

Sides were typical. The "loaded" potato lacked zest, was a bit mushy and filled with tasteless cheese—and no sour cream; it really wasn't very good at all. The coleslaw and sweet potato fries were fine. The mac' & cheese was okay. But the best side was the small salad bar (only $1 more if used as one of the two sides). Small in size, but plates were large, all 8 to 10 ingredients were fresh and nicely presented (except fake bacon & commercial croutons), the greens beautifully clean, and at least six dressings. My salad was delicious.

When ordering, one of our group ordered the combo platter, asking for smoked turkey and chicken. After waiting what we already thought was far too long, our waitress came back and said turkey cannot be had on the combo plate, the two choices had to be selected from chicken, beef, or pork. The person ordering this combo said, "I really want chicken & turkey." Nope the waitress said, "We don't do that." The order was changed—and then we waited! All told, it took 25 minutes to get our order, and the only items not taken from the smoker or oven were fries and onion rings.

There's lots of BBQ in Florida that's very good or excellent. I thought Big Wood BBQ & Grill only adequate; and the service painfully slow.

“Good ribs”

Not such good Mac N Cheese - skip the Mac N Cheese, but the cole slaw was good, the salad was good, the ribs were very good, and the prices were reasonable.

4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 5, 2014

okay i consider mysself a bar b q fan and eat when i can --they have a sign on the road and follow otherwise you will miss it --location is out of mainstream . restaurant is beautiful wood, new but if you do not like animal heads ---do not go there there are plenty on the walls. had one of the best waitresses ever unfortunately forgot her name! bar b q was outstanding and sides all great --not a big fan of their sauce a little too mustardly even in the sweet red but eatalbe. if you need bar b q and in the vicinity eat here and bypass the shed. baby back ribs the very best i have had bar none

“It's on the west side of the road”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 23, 2013 via mobile

After a daunting 4 Lane change just past Wal-Mart, there it sits on a hill with its dynamic red roof. The plates are as cheap as the sandwich and a jaunty staff serves the standards in witty style. 3 house sauces to choose from. Slaw & green beans are just right (ham AND garlic) and great value. We'll be back!
