I'm surprised by reviews saying they didn't care for the food or it was over priced. My friend ordered oyster's rockefeller and they came out on a big platter and still brought one more out that wouldn't fit. The oysters were huge and they tasted great! All our meals were very good. (the clam linguinie was super) We had been in the area for almost two weeks and the price seemed comparable to the other restaurants we had been to. But even past the food, this is an experience to be had even if you just came over for a drink. You get on this little boat that will hold several (nothing fancy but nothing shabby either) You go 10 minutes through the canal waterway with lots of pretty houses to look at. Then you come up on literally what looks like a large garage. When you read the history you get what you are looking at and it makes sense.. When you get inside it is quaint and rustic and feels rich with history. I mean Roosevelt and Churchill used to meet here. Ernest Hemingway used to drink here and we were told that earlier this year Bill Clinton came here The food was great and our server was more than attentive but just to go to somewhere that isn't your usual beach fair or basic restaurant is pretty darn cool. It has been what we have told the folks back home about the most out of our whole trip. CapsPlace was unusual, interesting, a great meal and a great experience.

We were disappointed in our recent visit here. We were trying to find some place local and out of the ordinary to go to while on vacation. While it did meet those criteria, we were disappointed with the food, atmosphere and cost of the restaurant. The food was mediocre at best and way overpriced - $3.50 for a small soft drink for the kids with NO refill! Over $35 charged at the bar for two glasses of wine and 3 sodas. That's ridiculous. Our bill came to almost $300 for four adults and three kids - with only 3 alcoholic beverages purchased. The fruit coctail that came with the kids meal was in a dish with warm water - gross. The vegetable that came with the meals was some sort of tasteless summer squash, most of which was mushy and overcooked. The main dishes were average in taste, especially given the $30 pricetag for the entrees. One exception was the steak, which while overpriced as well, tasted good.
The whole atmosphere was very strange as well. There was barely any furniture on the patio where went for a drink because we were early. No one was around to greet us or clean up the patio area. The place looked like it was about to fall down. We wondered where all that money they charged was going.

In our approximately 10 years of coming here, it has always been a highlight that we save for our last night. This year the launch had a new captain, Captain Johnny. He was informative & friendly, a welcome change from the previous stoic captain. Things were starting off well. We were early so had time to stop in the bar for a drink. The bartender was also very friendly. Once seated things took a bit of a turn. Our waiter was inattentive at best. I mean, when we are paying $50 or more for dinner & we are the only table you have - how hard is it really to refill our drinks or bring more bread? Portions have gotten smaller while prices have increased. We may not return next year. It seems to. Maybe time for a change to our routine.

Such a neat experience! Just finding the parking lot is an adventure- its in a residential neighborhood. The boat ride is fun and the captian gives you a little bit of history.

The place is so old and cute- old Florida fabulous. The food was delicious. I had some sort of flaky white fish with a mango salsa type thing on top. The key lime pie was great. The service was prompt and and friendly. Yum!

The bar is worth peeking your head in too!

This is not chili's, don't expect shiny tiles and 10000 menu choices.

The boat ride back is tougher. Our wait was windy and chilly, and the many drunk angry waiting people didn't help. The boat can only fit so many and the captain does not count as you board, instead you board and then he counts and makes people get off!! so make sure you get and stay in some sort of line to avoid anger- if you have a group that came in several cars you may want to plan not to take the boat back together, it's harder when there's a large group to all be on the same boat shuttle. Bring a jacket and Remember that that part is part of the fun and just be patient and not angry!

LOVED caps place!

My family and I (wife and 2 kids) ate here the last week of March, 2012. We made a reservation online on their website for a 5:30 seating the day of our visit. There's a little boat that takes you to the restaurant (a 3-4 minute ride) and when you walk up you think "Oh boy, what have I done..this place doesn't look good". Don't be put off by the looks of the outside; the inside is very quaint, the food is excellent (get the crab cakes...best crab cakes my wife has ever eaten and she's eaten a lot of crab cakes), and the service is very friendly and prompt. If you've got kids they'll love trying to pet the numerous feral cats that they feed before the restaurant opens. All in all, probably our best find food wise for the whole trip.
