This old theatre has been refurbished and is so beautiful inside. There is even an organist playing the old organ before movies. For those of you who remember the good old days, you will really enjoy this! Aside from movies, there are live performances here too. Last spring we saw Natalie Cole and it was a wonderful show. Last week we saw the movie, "Margin Call" there. They boast that Elvis performed here back in the 50's and signed the wall. That has been preserved. They offer tours too.

As the previous reviewer said, the Polk Theatre has been around since the 20s. It'sa special old movie theatre that they've restored but kept the original charm--with sparkling stars in the ceiling, a viewing balcony and comfy velvet seats. On the weekend, there's an organist and raffle drawing. The tickets are still less than the Cobb and they get artsy/indie films you'd have to drive to Sarasota to see. It's sweet.

Created in the 1920s, the Polk Theatre was a product of the booming Florida cultural scene. It quickly took hold as the prominent attraction in Lakeland. Though as time went on, the Polk Theatre was largely forgotten. AMC, Cobb Theatres, Silvermoon, and the Palm Cinema III took the stage, leaving the Polk Theatre in disrepair and out of public eye. But begining in the mid 1980s, the cultural revolution in Polk County sparked excitement in this once-forgotten cinema. With the founding of local Fine Arts centers, such as the Lois Cowles Harrison School for the Visual and Performing Arts, and the Florida Dance Theatre, the Polk Theatre regained a strong level of prominence. In the mid 1990s, the Theatre went through massive renovations, moderizing much of the building's components, while keeping the historic significance of the building intact.

Since its retoration, the Polk Theatre has maintained importance in the community as a medium for emerging artists, and even some top names. Films and Live productions are held nearly every weekend at 7:30 on Fridays and Saturdays, and 2:00 on Sundays. The Rocky Horror Picture Show is the preeminent feature of the year, selling-out every year since its inception.

Aside from offering spectacular shows, the theatre itself is a splendor to behold. The intriguing style of painting and decor really catches one's eyes. There are even some hidden areas that are kept secret that are quite astonishing. Make sure to call ahead and request a full tour of the theatre.
