Holiday Celebration Tour: Ice Slides and...

The Gaylord is definitely an awe inspiring hotel. We stayed here while we visited the ICE exhibit. The hotel like all Gaylords was over staffed which lead to a great satisfaction for us and not having to wait in line for everything like checking in or valet. With as many visitors that they had they were able to maintain the hotels standards. The hotel is divided up to be different parts of Florida. They didn't just name them they actually themed them as well. The hotel is worth a visit even with all of their cool things to do including their family friendly pool. This is probably Florida's best luxurious family friendly resort.

My girlfriend and I were really excited when we found out that Ice was occurring at the Gaylord Palms. We went on Monday night during our Florida vacation, and thought the exhibit itself was amazing, especially the nativity scene. However, we could not believe that the Gaylord charged 19.26 for parking. We were in the Gaylord for no more than 45 minutes, and find it hard to believe that in the year 2014, they cannot install the technology to charge parking by at least half-hour increments.. I remember putting a parking ticket into a reader in the 1980's, and being charged in 15 minute increments.....I have to wonder, how much profit does the Gaylord need?

I, the wife went with three other women for a day out and what a day it was, fantastic. We had the whole afternoon there. We went prepared, which means long pants and a very warm jacket and shoes and socks. We all carried gloves as well. You are given coats, but you do need warm shoes and something for your hands. It was not crowded, so we could take our time and really enjoy the carvings and have a lot of fun. I did the slide too. It was great. It is very well organized so there is no confusion about where to go or how many times you could enter if you did get cold. These carvings are so very good, hard to look at them and think that they are just ice. The carvings all were within the story of the Nutcracker, some very pretty, some very funny. The merchandising outside was very nicely set up and the gingerbread area for the children looked very inviting. We did eat in the hotel and the waitress reminded us about stamping our parking ticket, so the parking was free for us. We had a lovely lunch. We walked all around the indoor gardens to enjoy the Christmas plants and decorations and took wonderful photo's of us, the girls and the beautiful gardens. I will go back to this event next year and there will be many more of us going, that's a promise. It was just so much fun. Worth every penny. I feel this was not overpriced and with the free parking because of the meal at the hotel, it was actually a very fair price.

We booked a room package at Gaylord Palms to enjoy the ICE featuring the Nutcracker over Thanksgiving. It was a great deal, we had wrist bands to enter the frozen display as often as we wanted during our stay. This makes sense, because it is really cold inside, and having the option to leave and come back is nice. You will want to take many photos of the carvings, and your camera may decide it is too cold. Bring your own gloves, hat, and scarf unless you want to buy them, the parka they lend has no pockets. The ice slide is not steep, so it is kid friendly. Our free photo came out great, and you can warm up afterwards with hot cocoa and treats. There is also a shopping area, "Alpine Village" which requires no admission ticket and sells Christmas themed items. We did not do the gingerbread decorating, which is an additional cost, or purchase a ticket to ride the "tubing hill", which looked short and shallow, so not that impressive.

The artwork and creativity in the ice sculptures is fantastic, especially in the Nativity scene. The rest of the resort also has some great holiday decorations and great lights in the main atrium. The night we were there, they did not have the stage show (which was not made known to us ahead of time).

If it is your first time staying at Gaylord Palms, keep in mind it is a huge resort, so your room might be far from the festivities, parking is $19 for self-park, $26 for valet, and they charge a $20 resort fee per day; all of this is explicit on the website when you book your room. We enjoy the food in Wreckers, even if it is noisy with all the big screens going.
