“Fall In Love With Fall!”
Reviewed August 5, 2008

Gold Head Branch State Park is a place for those who love the outdoors..and for those who can be entertained by the outdoors. (But not for swimmers). My family has been camping here for the past 14 years and love it. Granted, we tent camped in May one year and realized that was not best for us. However, the five of us would rather camp here in the fall rather than anywhere else! There is so much beauty to see. The leaves changing, the animals are up and running about in the early mornings or at dusk. Deer and racoon are awesome to sit and watch. If you enjoying walking on brisk mornings or riding bikes in the cool evening or sitting by the camp fire - you will really like staying here. My son (who is now 19) learned to ride his bike here 15 years ago. It really is a wonderful place to stay in the fall. Try it once and you'll keep coming back.

We camped in our travel trailer here over the Easter Weekend. The area is very desolate and so you definitely get that real camping experience. The trees are plentiful and beautiful. Our campsite was in the lakeview camping although that is just a name because you can't see a lake from the campsites. The campsite we had was one of the more spacious sites we have had compared to other campgrounds. There was adequate trees between sites providing some privacy. The campground itself has little to offer besides nature which may be great for some. We have 4 children who became bored. It says to call about the lake levels before you go and I would certainly suggest that if you are planning to do much in the way of fishing or swimming. There are 2 lakes in the park, little and big lake johnson. Little lake Johnson is at least 4 times larger than big lake johnson which is nothing more than a dried up pond to say it best. The lakes were a disappointment but most of all the staff was not at all polite or helpful. One evening, the camphost yelled at our children and other children for riding bikes around the bathroom area. Mind you, our friends campsite was next to the bathroom and this man proceeded to yell at the children who were on their bikes in their own campsite. It was also quite early and not anywhere near quite time if that was his excuse. Furthemore, upon hiking our way back from the "pond" with our two young toddlers we started up what looked like a trail only to be questioned by a staff member about where we were going. We asked if the trail led back to camp (hoping it may be a shorter hike than the one we took in with the kids) and he proceeded to be anything but helpful. He questioned what camp we were in, why we didn't just go the same way we came in and never helped us with directions. This was the same staff member who we checked in with upon registration. We had to ask for a map of the park and he acted like we were putting him out by asking for one. Any other parks we have been to they have given us a map and pointed out areas of interest and been very helpful. So, although the lakes are nothing to be desired, the staff is what will keep us from returning to this state park in the future.
