The Holiday Inn Express & Suites Marathon
Ranked #5 of 16 Hotels in Marathon
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed March 27, 2011

Since this review will be long, here's the bottom line. While not inexpensive, this is the only chain hotel in Marathon and one of very few between Key Largo and Key West. It's new, clean, well-maintained and comfortable and probably the only well-reviewed property in Marathon with a good cancellation policy and which accepts reservations for as little as one night. We plan to stay there the next time we want to stay in the Marathon area.

The details are: We'd stopped staying in Marathon after our last, poor experience at the Holiday Inn that previously occupied this location, and were happy to see it being razed the last time we drove through Marathon. We were happy to try the entirely new facility on the same site, and it worked out very well for us.

The facility: A newly built three story Holiday Inn Express, complete with elevator, business center, fitness room and outdoor pool. Breakfast included, which is a typical Holiday Inn Express self-serve breakfast including cereals, hot dishes (an egg dish and a breakfast meat), breads, fruit, juices, and hot beverages, including very good coffee, served in a pleasant breakfast room which can, at peak times become somewhat crowded. (This is ameliorated by being able to take one's breakfast to one's room or to the nearby pool area.) Note: The new Marina Store (on the property) has installed a full-service "Seattle's Best" Coffee Bar with espresso and iced drinks; it should begin operating in a few days, according to the manager on March 27th, 2011.

Service: I can only rate this excellent. All staff , including housekeepers, smile and greet guests they encounter. Front desk staff are efficient and eager to help guests. After checking in we discovered our room did not include a refrigerator and microwave we asked if there were any rooms that had these, but told they were all taken; the desk clerk then offered to check if spares were available, and, if so, she would have them moved into our room. When we returned to our room the units had been moved in and set up, and they worked well.

Rooms: The rooms are attractive and housekeeping excellent. Beds and linens very comfortable; we slept very well. Plumbing excellent, towels very good and supplied in good number. The windows open; not appropriate in the warm weather while we were there, this would be an amenity in cooler weather. Wired broadband worked very well and consistently.

Price: At almost $200/night, even at discounted rates, this property might seem over-priced by mid-range hotel standards. The other side of this is to note that real estate, energy and utility, and labor costs are high in the Middle Keys. Perhaps the issue should be viewed from the angle of "What will the traffic bear?" Apparently guests must find it acceptable value for money since, according to a desk clerk with whom I spoke, the hotel fills up most nights.

The hotel is fairly new. It's about one hour away from Key West. We didn't mind the drive to Key West at all, we didn't need to be where the action is with young kids. We reserved the two queen beds with a pullout sofa. It had a mini microwave and mini fridge. If you need cutleries or plates you can always ask the front desk. It had a great breakfast with delicious cinnamon buns. The cheese omelette was good too but my sister can't stop talking about how good that omelette was.

The wifi connection was weak in the room and the pool area but they have a business center with printer by the fitness room. It was occupied a few times I wanted to use it but it's still a good to have just in case you need to print something.

The pool was great with brand new lounge chairs and even the pool towels were great. It overlooked the canal and the kids even chased the iguana. It was very relaxing.

I'll definitely stay here next time I'm in the Key West area.

This was a very busy weekend and the staff coped very well and were always friendly and courteous. Comfortable beds, nicely decorated and if you can get a pool and canal view. Other than that this hotel was built as cheaply as was possible. No storage counter below the high bath counter so your shaving kits/makeup bag's go on the floor. The marble throughout is of the lowest quality. A cheap slippery bathtub is the shower base. One very slow elevator for the entire building and the back door doesn't lock so don't leave valuables out of the safe. The breakfast was just okay, lacked some variety, especially fruit and not enough tables for a busy weekend. Even with my hearing aid's removed for the night I could distinctly hear my neighbors above and beside me. Thankfully my next door neighbor was very courteous and understanding when I phoned and asked him to lower the tv volume and he stated that he also noticed how thin the walls were. For the price, never again.

Ah the Keys. Takes forever to get anywhere! We thought this would be a midpoint location for exploring but spent a lot of time in the car. I think this would be great for relaxing, sleeping in, entertaining children at the pool. We went to Key largo to snorkel one day and to Key West another day. Much too busy this time of year to enjoy Key West. Wall to wall people. There's a lot to do in the Marathon area, though with the bridge nearby, the Turtle Hospital and other state parks. This hotel was great but very expensive this season. Refused AAA discount.

new, clean, roomy, very nice hotel. Only negative is we were by the pool so it was a little loud and also we could hear the guests through the walls (and they could hear our children, sorry). The pillows were also very thick. Other than that, it was a great stay in a great hotel.

Nice, nearly new hotel. Clean, with comfortable beds, selection of pillows. Our suite was all one room, with two double beds and a pull out couch, small kitchen area with fridge, microwave, tiny sink, and even a small selection of disposable paper plates, cups, pastic silverware and napkins.

The outdoor pool looked very nice (we didn't have time to try it out) and was overlooking a small river.

Now the two big disapppointments -
1. The walls are PAPER thin! I have never been in a hotel that was as poorly soundproofed! The others who commented on this are exactly right - you can hear every word from the adjacent rooms. We even tried the trick of running the fan to make white noise to drown out the talking, but the fan was actually nice and quiet! So we continued to hear our neighbors' conversations. Very annoying!

2. The free in-room wireless internet - The three of us were REALLY looking forward to each getting on our laptops and catching up on emails, etc. With free wireless, we thought we would be all set. But no, the wireless only works in some rooms! When we inquired why it did not work, we were told, "It only works on the first and second floors." And we were on the third floor. The staff cheerily told us, "The wireless works great in the lobby." When I complained to the desk that they advertised "free in-room wireless internet" yet it was available only in some rooms, she replied, " It doesn't say "ALL rooms."

Would we stay here again - maybe. I would really look for other options.

This is a brand new hotel midway to Key West. Clean and staff very friendly. There is a very good seafood restaurant directly across the street.

I am surprised to read some previous reviews mentioned that the hotel was noisy. I did not hear any noise at all.

The bed was super comfortable. The complimentary breakfast was ok, not top quality, but many good choices.

The price I paid was highest amongst all the Holiday Inn Express I have ever stayed in, but it is still a good value considering other Florida key hotel charge more for not as good rooms. Believe me, I always do research and compare reviews before booking a room.
