The Hawks Nest
Reviewed December 8, 2013

We just returned after a week in the Keys. This hotel was in a great location. Right on the water next to the start of the 7 mile bridge. Perfect! one hour from the Key West. This hotel is a small hotel with very friendly & helpful people. If you are looking for a concierge, resort-type hotel... this place is not for you. For the regular folk who enjoy sunsets, mingling with others, clean rooms and balconies with each room...this is the place to stay We would recommend this hotel to people going to the Keys. They have bikes to use, boats to rent and a great pool by the ocean (and a hot tub!)

We traded through Interval International, which has become increasingly more difficult. Great places are often not available, as they were 30 years ago. Hawks Nest has a steady, loyal group of folks who come year after year. This place isn't for everyone--but if you like no frills, quiet, and restful, you'll enjoy it. We stayed in 204, a large two bedroom, two bath unit. Most of the essentials are provided, and there's plenty of shade by the pool. The hot tub is nice, and little huts provide a great place to watch the sunset. One of the nicest features is that a two mile spanse of the bridge is nearby for walking, biking and jogging. The tennis court is around the corner--run down, but playable. We took one of the resorts boats out, which was very well maintained and clean. The cost was a little over $100., reasonable by any standard.

Employees are very friendly. Jay is wonderful and helpful, as is Steve and Kristin. There's no sales pitch here, keeping in line with the relaxed atmosphere. The best units are 1, 2 and 3 numbers, which face the open water. 07 numbers on floors 3 & 4 have a pretty good view, as well. The office closes after 5, and on Sundays, though, so if you want "attention" round the clock, this isn't the place. Everything is very low key. There are two great grills for barbecuing, a large dining hall for when you have guests, a washer & dryer room, a game room and book exchange, video room. Maid service is daily, except for Thursday and Sunday, and towels are plentiful and plush.

The kitchen doesn't have such things as a cutting board or salad spinner, so we got those and some other extras at the thrift stores. If you need extras, check out Purrrr fect Thrift store, or the Garage Sale Thrift store. For dining out, Lazy Days is excellent.

Use Publix for groceries.

Overall, this is a great place. Not fancy, but relaxed and quiet.

You can't beat this place! Five stories you never felt crowed. Right on the ocean at the Seven Mile Bridge. All the rooms have balconies Our corner room had a great view of the bridge and had spectacular views of the sunsets. Our check in went great. Jay set the tone for the entire vacation with his laid back, no problem attitude. Rooms were spacious and clean. Maid service every day. Great restaurants in the area. This was our third visit to the Keys and our first to Marathon and our best visit.

Been coming here for over 30 years and it is still my favorite place to vacation. There couldn't be a better view of the sunset. Rooms are great size and very comfortable. Pool is always clean and office staff very helpful. A little wear and tear because of the age of the building but they do a pretty good job of updating where it's required. If you like a place that feels like home away from home but with relaxed atmosphere and beautiful views you'll love Hawk's Nest.

Cannot thank the resorts staff each and every one. They were friendly , kind , and helpful .
The units were clean and comfortable. The view was georgous . Sunsets every night behind the

We tried to find a suitable timeshare exchange through RCI, but when that didn't happen we rented a two br, 2 bath corner unit on the 3rd floor at Hawk's Nest Resort. It's in a convenient location and yet off the main road which makes it convenient and fairly quiet. A boat ramp is next door and I enjoyed watching the boats coming and going. There is no beach here but the pool and ocean views satisfied me. The resort is really almost on the water.

This is an older resort, built about 40 years ago we were told and it shows its age but the unit had all we needed. Management was courteous and helpful. The resort has two very nice, well kept up gas grills. They looked new to me. I grilled a steak for dinner one night and met others there grilling fish.

Both owners and renters received maid service most days (not Sun. or Thurs.). From my experience, this is not common for timeshares. Some have no service and some others have a mid week touch up kind of cleaning. Recently some resort info explains you that you've received "starter packages" of soap, toilet paper, garbage bags, dishwasher detergent", etc. but you will need to purchase more if necessary. This was not true here. There was a large pile of dishwasher packets and garbage bags in the unit. The maid brought plenty of bath soap each time she serviced the unit. These small touches simply made for a more relaxing vacation.

If we choose to drive down to the keys again, we will certainly try to rent at Hawk's Nest. It's a timeshare resort available through II, at this writing.

I agree that it's strange to have to pay for the untilites for the unit. I've never come across that situation until now. Our utilities bill was about $64 for the week. However, we knew about that charge when we reserved the unit, so there were no unhappy surprises at check out time.

Room Tip: The corner units let in more sun with generous ocean views. The balcony can be accessed through two...
