We had a terrific stay at this resort. It's well located in the middle keys, right off the main highway, but very isolated. Rooms are 2 story townhouses, fully featured and very comfortable. Ours was on the beach, with the steps leading directly onto the sand. The restaurant, Butterfly, is outstanding. Note that the resort is not full service as it lacks, for example, on site breakfast and a sundries/gift shop. Also, while the main pool was large and beautiful, it was overrun with a very loud group of young boys during our stay, and there was no staff around to help control the noise. Otherwise, we had an outstanding stay.

Tranquility Bay Resort on Marathon Key has been my go-to place of lodging for many years. It sits on a very unassuming and unimpressive stretch of Overseas Highway, on the right as you head south. At first glance, you would not even think a "resort" lay behind the roadside shrubbery that conceals it. In fact, you might even miss it it not for the sign opposite the little Tom Thumb convenience store across the road.

However, once you make the right turn into the circular driveway, the busy road melts away and a beautiful property is revealed. With a look of Old Southern charm to the main check-in area's exterior, to the more modern white sided townhouses, it becomes apparent that this is no mere roadside motel.

The resort consists of connecting bi-level beach townhouses arranged in a staggered ring around its well maintained grounds. A small beach lagoon offers wading opportunities and is fine for kids and snorkeling. It is roped in and overlooks the gulf side. Plenty of clean sand abounds on the private beach, with lounges, a tiki bar and volleyball nets. The beach does not stretch far beyond the property, instead, it is an enclosed perimeter. The sunsets here rival any in Key West in my experience. Lots of palm trees and a beautiful gazebo makes for a perfect tropical wedding setting.

The property boasts three swimming pools. One main pool and two smaller pools provide both family and adult-only enjoyment. All over the property, a flowered fragrance wafts, and little salamanders roam the paths. Terraces with beautiful foliage grace the walkways and porches. Every unit seems to provide a great view of the water. The beach condos are appointed with full kitchens, three bathrooms, flat screen TVs, two bedrooms upstairs (one master and one guest room with washer-dryer in the guest room). There are two beds in the guest room and the main bed is comfortable and BIG. Decor is sunny and pleasant. I have stayed in four different units and always felt satisfied beyond expectations.

One of the best aspects of this resort is the Butterfly Cafe restaurant. I have eaten here even when not staying on the property because it is superb! The specialty is the Grouper but
other highlights include the smoked fish dip, any of the amazing fresh salads, the Cuban pork chop, Mahi Mahi and Crab Cake appetizer. Indoor and outdoor dining is available and each has its advantages. The dining room is full of elegant island/country ambience, with pleasant lighting and comfortable seating. Outdoors offers a veranda with balcony and view of the bay through the palms. Service is equally attentive by friendly staff inside and out. One waitress even offered a spritz of natural insect repellent the night mosquitos decided to join the party.

The resort provides a pleasant fitness center in a separate building tucked amongst the florid walkways. Room key access allows entry around the clock. The equipment is not abundant but this neatly maintained little "chalet" gym is just fine to keep you from lapsing out of your workout routine while on vacation. I confess that I have not indulged in the spa services or other activities the resort offers. For me, the short proximity to Bahia Honda State Park makes this property a great base hub. It is a quick drive to Sombrero Beach, plenty of shopping stores and a very beautiful recreation park that is open at night for games. Even Key West is close enough for a day jaunt.

Overall, Tranquility Bay Resort may be pricey during peak season but what you get in terms of accommodations justifies the expense. The two-level condo townhouse with beautiful grounds and amazing dining offerings makes me return again and again.

Room Tip: Every unit is excellent. Definitely eat at the Butterfly Cafe at least once.

I would give 10 stars if I could. This place is amazing! The staff is so friendly and so accommodating! The pool is perfect for the kids. They have a section where they could wade in perfect for toddlers as well as young child who can swim because the pool never gets deeper then 4 feet. The pool allows floats which is great as well. They also have an adults only pool so you don't worry about bothering anyone. The Butterfly cafe on the grounds is excellent as well as the tiki bar. There is a local grocery store nearby to stock up on some items (recommend breakfast items since restaurant nor room service available in the morning and local breakfast places are slow!) the rooms are immaculate this really is a 5 star family resort!

We are currently at the end of our third day at TB - week duration - and we are thrilled with the place. We read a lot of reviews about TB before booking so saw the good and the bad written.
Just read the 'poor review' listed today so wanted to jump right in. TB is great. The pool is amazing- we have 3 small children under the age of 4 and it couldn't be better. Everywhere we look are families with small children - no drunken louts or people getting crazy. Our townhouse is wonderful. We have 3 bedrooms and, when booking, requested a unit between the pool and the beach. They listened! We are smack bang between the 2 with a great grassy area out front for our kids to play! Tonight we ate at the tiki bar (serves food until 5) and it was very tasty. Fish tacos were delicious and the children played in the sand with buckets and spades.
As for the service? I constantly see staff walking around. Maybe the last reviewer was blind. We have been stocked daily with everything we need and if anything is missed (we didn't have a fry pan) you just call the front desk and they bring it to you. There is only one set of dishes, glasses etc per person but they supply you with dishwasher detergent so you run it whilst at the pool.
They supply you with coffee, tea, toilet paper, paper towels , dish & laundry detergent (do you know how fabulous it is to have a washer and dryer in room?) and bathing supplies.

When we initially looked into this trip we wanted somewhere that would be enjoyable and low maintenance with young children. TB hit the mark. At first we thought it costly until we looked at everything available. Its right in line. The house has all the amenities you could ask for, the beds are comfy and the living room spacious and comfortable. They are clean!
We look forward to trying the butterfly cafe in the next few nights - everyone here says its wonderful food- and continuing our leisurely vacations.
I will point out that the price does fluctuate daily so check back regularly after you book. We booked about 6 weeks ahead of time- checked in a few weeks before and the final amount was $800 less. They adjusted our total to the new rate!
We flew into Miami, drove down to Marathon after a quick stop at 'Robert is here' fresh market. If you like fresh homegrown produce go there! It's on the way and great.
Ok - I have a holiday to resume!

We had great time staying here, nice space that we shared with 2 other couples, cooked hung out at the pool, kayaked, etc.. The restaurant was excellent and the staff were very friendly and helpful. The location is in the middle of the "Keys" so, heading out on adventures was easy.

I love the view from the water side condos. Beautiful white sandy beach with lawn chairs to sit in the sun.
The condo was three bedroom, two bath and plenty of room for two couples or a family. The kitchen however was poorly equipped making it difficult to cook a larger meal. We did not have even salt and pepper and would have had to do a major shopping to out fit the place so we opted to eat out with the exception of breakfast. The condos inside were clean but I was surprised to not see more grounds keepers keeping the sandy area raked and the path ways clear of leaves etc. The units are expensive but probably the nicest units around. the deck chairs were wood and not that comfortable to sit in and would like to see an side table to be able to drink your morning coffee at.

Room Tip: We had room 39 this was the water view and beach units

We recently spent a week at Tranquility Bay with extended family, four adults and two children. If this is rated as one of the best places in the Keys, then families should look elsewhere if Florida is your destination of choice. At first glance TB looks pretty nice, the grounds are clean, the people at the front desk are friendly, but then as things continue, the shortcomings start presenting themselves.

The townhouses are a decent size, but in the three bedroom units, the queen room (which was really a full) has no windows, only a door on to a balcony, with no screen. The kitchens are usable (they only give you one set of everything per person, so you will do the dishes after every meal). No problem there, dirty dishes attract bugs very quickly in the tropics. The beds (in our opinion) were terrible and a week is a long time to go with a good night's sleep, especially when you're supposed to be on vacation.

The beach is small (netted off about 50 feet from shore) and hardly usable. There is a constant inflow of sea grass that washes up on shore and fill up a good third of the water space. This is part of the natural ecosystem which I understand, it's just unfortunate.

The large family pool looks great. It is a saltwater pool, so no chlorine sting, which is great, especially for the kids. The problem however, is that there doesn't seem to be any ongoing maintenance. Both our children came down with some sort of coughing sinus related bug after two days of swimming, and beware of the iguanas that use the pool as a toilet.

The housekeepers are ever present, as it takes them all day to get through all the units, and other than them and the reception desk, there don't seem to be any other employees. Pool towels are left in your room for you at check-in, and are yours for the duration of your stay. This means no towels at the pool, and just no services at all anywhere. This also means that there is no-one around to enforce any of the hotel policies or keep anything in check. There are simply just no staff around to provide anything (unless you speak Spanish, most of the housekeepers do not speak English. The housekeeping was erratic at best, sometimes they would replenish toilet paper or towels, other days not, sometimes they would mop the floor, sometimes they would barely do more than empty the trash.

Over all, this place looks good on paper (or online), but does not live up to what it advertises.

Room Tip: If you still choose to stay here unit 77 looked like the best location, somewhat private, away from...
