I have read many conflicting reviews about Rainbow Bend. My wife and i spent two beautiful days there in mid-February. Rainbow bend is in a lovely spot with big views of the water, ample birds rambling around the property and flying overhead, palm trees, and quiet. Everyone who worked there was pleasant and helpful. Our room was large and clean, with great views. Breakfast every morning was nothing fancy, but perfectly adequate. We used kayaks and peddle boats, and we make ample use of the free motor boats, for which we paid only gas, amounting to $12 for each two-hour period we used them. We went to sand bars where we collected shells, and explored some of the inlets. There is no snorkling within boat distance, but we did take a nice trip from Marathon to an incredible reef at a very low cost. Across the street from the hotel is a bike/walking path in the woods along salt marshes and water. And when it's time to relax, there are swinging benches along the beach, and a hot tub by the pool.
So what is possibly bad about Rainbow Bend? I guess if the weather is bad, then you can't take advantage of all that the resort offers. But other than that, it was a great stay!

My wife and I have been staying at Rainbow Bend for three years running. We love the Grassy Key / Marathon area as it is central to all the Keys. We have stayed in nearly every type of room they have. Some are bettter than others so you have to book far enough in advance to get a good view. If its the Marriott you are expecting this isn't the hotel for you, stay in Key largo or Key West.
This is the keys the way it used to be, uncrowded and relaxing.
The staff at the hotel are courteous and helpful. There are a bevvy of small resorts between Islamorada and Big Pine Key but this is one of the best. Oh by the way take the time to learn about no-see-ums before you come down, bring some skin-so-soft.
Another little tidbit, they don't spray for pests in the state parks so be especially watchful there.

We just returned from a three night stay at the Rainbow Bend. It was everything we thought it would be and enjoyed it very much. The staff was wonderful and the amenities appreciated. The surroundings of the place are very relaxing, the boats are more than sturdy, and the breakfast was a nice touch. You are in driving distance of anything you need, and we had a lovely 2 bedroom which was very comfortable.
It's the Keys..it's a tropical resort and it's peaceful. If you like loud hotels, this is not the place for you. This is the type of place to unwind and play. Bahia Honda Park is a short drive and worth checking out.
I highly recommend it. You have to expect elevated prices certain times of the year. But the Rainbow Bend is a people friendly resort that will allow you a placid vacation if you choose..or a very active one with all the water activities that you can handle and you can go fishing everyday. It's worth staying here.

Oh. my. God. What an overpriced ripoff. Where to begin with the problems. The room was dank an musty. You expect some dampness in the Keys, but this was horrible. The room we stayed in seemed like it had probably been a storage room at some point, then someone decided to slap a coat of paint on it (20 years ago) and charge way too much for it.

The bed felt like damp marshmallows. Completely worn out mush. Rust stained sheets. Bedspread from 1973.

There were little dead flies all over the floor, even after the room had been cleaned during our stay.

Bedside tables were coated in dust.

Blinds didn't raise or even tilt to let light in.

TV was so small you couldn't watch comfortably from bed.

The free motorboats were so rickety looking we were afraid we'd sink if we used one.

Filthy laundry room.

The pool was disgusting. I don't think it was cleaned once during our entire stay. Not even skimmed to get the bugs and debris out.

We seriously thought about leaving, and probably should have, except they would have kept a tidy sum for checking out early.

Do not waste your money on this cesspool.

As I sit here in the broken dining room chair and look at a bathroom off the the living room and see exposed wiring, vertical blinds that do not work and an overall room out of the 60's with wall between the bedroom and the living room that end 18 inches from the ceiling, I am getting the feeling that even in the "upgraded room" room we were given, we over paid. At almost $200 a night room it should have at least had the little shampoo bottles in the bathroom. Sure you get to use their boats for free. But the boats our in poor shape and you pay for the gas at a rate of $6.00 per gallon and you are charged in a minimum of 1.5 gallon increments. The room we had was right next to the road so the traffic noise was very loud and the walls are thin between rooms so the slightest noise from the adjoining room can be heard. Added to the price of the room is an automatic 15% tip for the maid and boat dock worker whether you use to boats or not. As we were driving here there are much better rates available else where for better facilities and they do not require you to stay a minimum of 2 nights.

We spent a lovely six days at the resort with our children. We went with the intention to relax and did just that. The property is older and in places does look like it needs renewing, nevertheless it has charm and personality. As travellers from the UK we are used to hotels serving breakfast, so breakfast being including was a real bonus. We used the free boats on two occasions which gave us the freedom to 'explore'. The staff in the resort and restaurant were very friendly and helpful. As soon as we left the resort we missed it and the wonderful sight of the sea at your doorstep. Thank you to everyone for making our stay so enjoyable.

Try as you may, you'll not find a more authentic and enjoyable Keys experience than Rainbow Bend. My wife and I stayed 3 nights in room 15 (Octagon upstairs), a 1 BR efficiency overlooking the ocean, and the unit was clean, comfortable, roomy, and quiet. The staff was very friendly, from check-in to restaurant to marina. They work hard and are always cheerful. We fished every day, and Tommy, Charlie, and John helped us with everything we needed. We actually caught fish!! If you don't want to fish, they'll direct you to where you can swim, snorkel, or just enjoy a pleasant boat ride thru the flats. After a morning of fishing, we sat in the spa and cooled in the pool which were both clean and well maintained. From there it was an easy drive to other activities in the mid-Keys. We did not get a chance to have dinner in the restaurant but the parking lot was crowded on Saturday night, so it's definitely popular. We did have the complimentary breakfast each day, which was well prepared and served with a smile. At night before bed, we sat in a lounge on the beach, shared a bottle of wine, and saw more stars than we'd seen in ages just a few feet from our room.
We had a great time. Remember this is the Keys. If you want a Miami-style resort with drink service at the pool and plush bathrobes in your room, then don't come down. If you want an authentic Keys experience that's got everything this area offers in a laid back, friendly, service-oriented environment, then this is the place. We'll be back!
