My wife and I took a tour boat from Marathon over to Pigeon Key. Miss Barbara was a wonderful tour guide, with great command of the history of the keys and a warm, genuine delivery. It was a great way to spend a morning. Rather than take the boat back, we walked the old Seven Mile Bridge. The leg back to Vaca Key was only 2 miles or so, and a pleasant cap to the tour. On the walk we were fortunate to see one Green Sea Turtle (we think) feeding within about 50 yards of the bridge. The folks who built the road surface over the railroad bridge used the rails as guardrails for the span we walked. Pretty neat.

Great time. Stayed at the Knights Key Inn at the eastern base of the bridge and would walk the 2 miles to Pigeon Key every day. Great views of both the Gulf as wellas the Atlantic ocean. Great fishing and fish sightings. The sunsets are uncomparable to any place else. We love it so much, that we ended up buying property within view of the bridge.

We did some fishing near the bridge and saw a manatee, a ray and one of the fisherman caught a moray eel! We had fun catching some little snappers and some bigger jacks!

It's a beautiful ride. You've got the blue-green waters of the Atlantic on one side of you and the turquoise waters of the Bay of mexico on the other. What could be better?

I am talking about the old 7-mile bridge, which is only about two miles, runs along the new one.
It is a wonderful piece of Keys history. Sunset is a perfect time, or, early in the morning. Lots of runners, bicyclists, and walkers. It is hard to believe that it used to be the two-lane highway to the the lower Keys. I used to drive it!
It is very peaceful, wonderful time for reflection.
It is free to walk the bridge, but, they are asking for donations to save what is left of this magnificent structure. I believe the is a charge to go in inside Pigeon Key, which is a historical site at the end. Haven't been in there in years. If you a lover of Keys history, it is a must.
