Went on a tour with a bunch of my friends for senior spring break! It was a great combination of challenge, fun, and adventure!

Our family of two adults, our 5-year old son, and our 8-year old son spent an amazing morning paddle boarding. We were on our second trip with the best guide ever, Sophie (see previous kayaking review).

We started from the kayak-company owner's private residence on Grassy Key, and spent an incredible three hours paddling out into the bay, around an island, and back. We had never paddle boarded before, and we weren't sure if our 8-year old would be able to handle a board on his own. As with our previous trip, Sophie was calm, easy going, and fully supportive of whatever we wanted to try. She tied up a double kayak in the bay as a backup, and we let our son try out the paddle board. He got the hang of it quickly, but the conditions were a bit challenging (fairly windy, generating some current). We finally decided to try towing his board behind one of ours, while our 5-year old alternated between riding on the front of each of our boards. Not surprisingly, he decided he liked riding with Sophie the best, and proceeded to talk her ear off for the entire trip. Sophie was such a good sport, and was so nice to him.

The windy conditions were challenging, and provided a fairly strenuous workout. But oh was it worth it! A group of rays followed our boards for a while, and a big ray swam through the shallows with his tail out of the water. We found 5-6 live conchs, one starfish, a small hammerhead shark, and a small nurse shark. What an amazing day for wildlife!

With the wind at our backs, the return trip was a total delight, and our 8-year old had a blast paddling his own board. I would highly recommend this trip to anyone, but I would say that going out in windy conditions is not for the faint of heart. We got quite a workout, but we had an amazing experience. As with our previous trip, Sophie was the ultimate guide. Extremely knowledgeable about the local area and wildlife. And such a pleasure to talk to. Thanks again Sophie! This outing was the top highlight of our trip!

Our family of two adults, our 5-year old son, and our 8-year old son spent a terrific morning kayaking with our wonderful guide Sophie. We departed from Sombrero Beach in Marathon and had a leisurely paddle up Sister's Creek and into the Mangrove forests. The Mangroves were very cool with their roots branching down into the water, and several times we paddled through small water channels that flowed like tunnels through the trees. We saw lots of beautiful birds including Egrets and Herons. We saw lots of fish and small crabs that crawl on the Mangrove branches. The whole trip took about three hours.

We loved our guide Sophie. She was so nice and easy going. She was also very knowledgeable about the area, including the plant and wildlife. She explained all about the different types of Mangrove trees, and how they grow and deal with the salt water. In fact, we liked Sophie so much that we scheduled another tour paddle boarding with her later in the week (detailed in a separate review).

All in all, this was definitely one of the top highlights of our trip and we highly recommend it. Since we have younger kids, we took two double kayaks so that we could do most of the paddling (they have single kayaks available as well). There was a bit of a breeze, so paddling back against the current provided a bit of a workout, but nothing too strenuous. And the majority of the paddling through the Mangroves was very easy. Although a few of the Mangrove tunnels are narrow enough where you must pull yourself along and duck a few branches (which was a lot of fun). Everyone was encouraged to take their time and have fun. And we sure did!

Thank you Sophie for such a memorable and wonderful trip!

We booked the Mangrove Kayak Tour out of Sombrero Beach for 12 participants aged 10 to 73. We chose 6 tandem Kayaks and were assigned 2 tour guides -- Shannon and Daniel. The gear was top notch, the weather was perfect, and the scenery was awesome, but Shannon and Daniel really put this experience over the top. Both were kind, energetic, knowledgeable, and hip. Shannon pounced out or her Kayak to capture and display a snake, handled jellyfish as they stung her, and sang some on-demand karaoke for us. Daniel and Shannon showed patience with us and had encyclopedic knowledge of the mangrove flora and fauna. Very highly recommended.

In mid February, 2014, my boyfriend and I took a camping roadtrip to the Florida Keys. He had never been, but Ive spent my life vacationing in the Keys. I had never, however, taken a kayak tour through the mangroves. We enjoyed our time so much that we will never go back and NOT do this again! :) We had a very small group, which was great, the weather was perfect, and our tour guide, Sofia, knows everything about the mangroves! We saw several spotted rays, tons of birds, some jellies and an Iguana. We had such a fabulous time. There was another tour starting at the same time we were supposed to go out. Luckily, we got our kayaks in the water before the other group (of 20 people!!) did. :) Im glad we went with Keys Kayak, because I know that we would have never gotten the attention and conversation that we go to have otherwise. It was if we had our own private tour....which we kind of did! I will be back and I DEFINITELY recommend Keys Kayak to anyone!
