This is a great place to stay to spend a day or two fishing as part of a longer holiday down the Keys. This is the second time that I have visited Captain Pips. We normally reserve the use of a Boat and a Fishing Guide as part of our accommodation booking. On both occasions we have stayed in the Grouper Room. This is a reasonably large airy room with a comfortable bed. A little bit dated, but homely and charming. Everything is spotlessly clean, with good bedlinen and plenty of towels are provided. Although the Bathroom is relatively small, the Shower is large and is excellent. There is a large Fridge/ Freezer and Coffee/Tea Making machine in the room. There is a pleasant sheltered Garden area with views overlooking the private boat mooring pier. My Wife spent many hours reading in this quiet spot whilst I was out fishing. Captain Pips runs a fleet of well maintained and equipped boats and I was fortunate to be accompanied by a very good Guide Capt Zach Willis. We had a particularly successful day and caught a lot of very large Yellow Tail snappers, Capt Zach really knows his stuff ! - I hope that he will be available next time I visit. On an adjacent part of the property is Porky's Bar/Restaurant, This is a rather rustic and lively affair serving basket type meals, burgers and the like, Popular with the local fishing/boating community they seem to have live music every evening, we caught Dan Sullivan on a Thurs night who sings lively country music with amusing words, very good ! - a happy place altogether. Captain Pips Marina has a good web site http://captainpips.com/ which is well worth a look, We have found Ellie very friendly, competent and responsive to emails.

We didn't say here, but we rented a boat from here during our week stay in Marathon with the goal of diving Sombrero reef.

Back in the fall when we were booking our vacation during XMas to New Years week, most boat rental places I inquired at either did not reply back to my e-mails in a timely fashion, or they just said they were booked or needed minimum XXX days rental when booking in advance. Captain Pips replied back the very next morning, and she (I think her name was Ellie) was VERY helpful, and as I continued to e-mail back 'n forth with her, she was always replying back quickly and just seemed so helpful.

The day we rented the boat, was very windy, small craft warning, not a day to take our 10 yo daughter out to Sombrero reef to five. So we stayed mostly gulf side and around the 7 mile bridge area. Rented the 24' Hurricane deck boat. The boats are a bit more than "used" looking but the engine ran great, starts right up, and for a big 225hp was very thrifty on gas. And those are what count! Price seemed a bit better than some other places too.

The young girl that checked us in with the paperwork was very helpful and nice. And the dude that checked us out and back in with the boat was nice 'n laid back and helpful.

If we ever go back to the Keys and need to rent a boat, it will be from here!

We loved our stay at Captain Pip's at the end of October. We changed our minds a gazillion times but Ellie and Joanne were super accommodating of all our requests including a last minute change in plans which meant we need 5 extra nights accommodation and I sorted it from the airport on our way there! The rooms are a bit out of date but this added to the homeliness of it all and our overall Florida Keys experience and we would stay here again without hesitation. Love love loved it! The free boat that came with the room was great, as well as the help from the deck hands who were always willing to help and also gave us some pretty good tips on fishing spots! Well worth the visit :)

My 9 year old son and I had a great time for our first Keys fishing experience and his first trip ever to the Keys. The staff was great and Barbara set us up with Captain Zach for an awesome two days of fishing. The only complaint was that we had to leave. Can't wait to go back.
