“Places like this need to be preserved”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 14, 2013

This place is so nice but in desperate need of money.
They have a beautiful, long nature trail. And a tour on a small trolley (max 7 people) is included in the somewhat high admission ($12.50 per adult). They also house the Wild Bird Center which is financed by donations only. So it doesn't look as nice as in a Zoo, but their main goal also is to help the birds. The museum seems to be renovated at the moment, but looks very nice too.
Places like this need to be preserved, so go and spend half a day there and leave some money.

“Nice Nature Area”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 8, 2013

The nature walk and the museum area was nice. We enjoyed learning about the history of Florida and how people lived in Marathon many years ago. The place seemed to be struggling for more visitors which was evident by the upkeep.

“Great place to spend half a day - very historical and pretty!”

We had a cloudy day in Duck Key - kids were sunburned. Needed to do something that didn't involve a pool or beach. We didn't know much about the Nature Center, but so glad we went! Indoor museum tells a lot of history about the Keys. Outside, you walk through beautiful gardens and see amazing trees, flowers, etc. Then you come upon the original home of the Bahamians who developed the land, which is cool. There is also the Crane home that is still there...great water views.
Definitely worth the money and a few hours of your time. Very cool resource!!!

“Wonderful nature preserve”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 2, 2013

This was a surprise gem. I wasn't expecting to enjoy this stop, it was my husband's idea. You do need to come prepared. It is full of long walking trails, which are cut into the heart of tropical trees. There are a lot of animals, including spiders. If you walk carefully, it's easy to avoid all of these. Bring some water with you, as it is warm surrounded by all the jungle. There are several stops along the way; including an educational video, a historic trappers lodge, a bird rescue hospital with beautiful birds, and Crane house (closed during our visit).

However, the best part is the end of the walk. The trails lead you to the Point, a tiny island you reach by bridge. Here is a bench with a romantic, secluded view of the water, beach, and small islands, perfect to spend a few minutes relaxing at. That alone was well worth the rest of the hiking. I highly recommend a stop here; so long as you don't mind hiking and enjoy nature.
