nothing special here, though they did go out when most dive shops cancelled (seas 3-4 ft, 15-20 mph winds), so that was a plus. However their instructor on the boat made a big speech about coral protection and reef rehab efforts she's undertaken (great! like minded people), and 40 minutes later the mate dropped the anchor right on a coral head 15 ft from sand in only 26ft of water with damn good vis (45 ft) for the conditions... Walk the walk if you're going to talk that talk!!!

Dives were short and shallow, 45-55 minutes, getting back on the boat with 1200-1600 psi (82-110 bar) in an AL80 sure makes you feel like you didn't get your money's worth on the dive.

Our DM Travis was very nice, and I observed him assisting several divers with a few issues they were having, he saved rating from being 'poor.' His knowledge of local fish and inverts was excellent SIT banter.

Wow, I wish I had read the reviews before we rented a boat here as now I've seen a couple of reviews that had similar experiences. They clearly know these boats are not in good shape, but they rent them anyway.

We planned to rent a boat for 2 consecutive days. The first boat had a fuel pump issue and went incredibly slow. We had 10 people on the boat and had to turn around, drop off the family at home, and take the boat back to Captain Hooks. 2 hours later, they finally sent us off in a new boat. The motor on the new boat wouldn't raise for shallow water, so we were extremely limited in where we could take the boat and couldn't take it to areas where we could get out and swim or take it up close to islands and such.

We took it back after half a day of use because it was of no use to us. So instead of two days of boating and swimming with the family, we had a half day of issues. All of the other marina's in the area were booked for the remainder of the week, so we didn't get to go boating as planned. Thankfully, we were issued a refund and didn't have to pay for the issues we experienced. There was much confusion between the owner of the boat and Captain Hooks - not sure where the breakdown was there. We thought Justin was nice, but everyone else seemed unprofessional and messy.

Even if the boats we tried had worked properly, they had clearly seen better days. They just looked worn out, unclean, and tattered. Holes throughout the upholstery, bird droppings all over, holes in the canopy...

Not sure what's going on here, but the establishment just wasn't professional and we wouldn't return or recommend it. We discovered from locals that they refer to it as "Captain Crooks" - and while I wouldn't say they were crooks (as they issued a refund), there's obviously a tarnished reputation here somehow.

At a minimum, pass on the boat rentals here.

Upon arriving with my hubby, I was given the name " Augusta" due to where I was from.. And this I secretly loved ,lol... Captain Mike and crew were phenomenal and were so great in making sure we were taken care of.. I mean, we could snorkle at the wonders below... I cannot stress enough how easy captain hooks aka Jolly Roger made me feel, like the ocean was my second home.. These guys are best of the best and I have video of underwater adventure... Experienced, and all knowing of the water and below.. I will bet you 30$ that snorkeling with captain hooks vs it's competition.. You will see why Jolly Roger captain hooks team is thee standard of snorkle ready.. Tavayia Coke aka called " Augusta"

We went out in a driving rain storm and we eventually had horrible lightning all around us. The captain made a tough call and turned the boat around, putting our safety first. He called the owner and it appeared that she wasn't happy with his decision. I sure hope she wasn't more interested in the money as our safety. The lightning around us was NUTS and the captain absolutely did the right thing. Kudos to him.
We went the next morning and had a wonderful time. Donut reef was ok but coffin patch was really good. I recommend this group for your snorkel tour!

First, we are glad you got the opportunity to enjoy the reefs on your trip and thank you for the recommendation. We feel we offer the best value in diving and snorkeling in the Keys.

If you look through our reviews safety is a focus and concern for our dive operation. We are the only dive shop that puts a dive master in the water with the group at no additional cost to the diver. We feel it helps our divers that have not been in the water recently and it also helps to show the our divers the key sight and marine life on a reef that most have never seen before. There is added safety because of the in-water dive master is right there. In all cases, it is your choice to follow the in-water dive master or not.

The circumstances for that day was a little unique in that we had two boats out on the water during that storm. One of the boats was reporting that they were in the clear and getting ready to dive. They were at a dive location that was not affected by the storm. The owner was recommending to the captain of the boat that you were on, to go to that same location as the other boat. Due to a few minutes difference and the proximity of your boat, the storm had a greater impact and didn’t allow travel to the other boat’s location. We have a rule that the person responsible for the passengers makes the call, and in this case as with any vessel on the water, the call is the captain’s. He made the right call and everything worked out.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review and please come back to see us again.
