Owner description: Spirit Snorkeling of Marathon – providing daily snorkel trips to Sombrero Reef & Pirate’s Cove. Specializing in families and first time snorkelers, our friendly crew will take you on a fun filled adventure to the either the Sombrero Reef Marine Sanctuary and Lighthouse or to our special location on the Florida Bay—Pirate’s Cove. Sombrero Reef is the third largest barrier reef in the world and this beautiful 30 acre coral reef ranges from 2–30 feet deep with thousands of tropical fish. The Sombrero Lighthouse was built before the Civil War and today still helps mariners navigate the Keys with its light. Coral Reefs are among the most biologically diverse ecosystems on earth. They are second only to the tropical rain forests in the number of species they harbor, and indeed are sometimes called “The Rain Forests of the Sea”. You haven’t really seen the Keys until you’ve seen our under water areas. If the weather is too rough to go out to Sombrero Reef our dedicated crew will take you over to Pirate’s Cove, where the water is generally much calmer. Here you will see many species of tropical fish, under water plant life, lobsters and even sea horses. The water is quite shallow, making it a perfect spot to snorkel. Even sightseers enjoy our trips as many species can be seen from the boat. We take no scuba divers, we only go to shallow water snorkeling locations and Back Water Eco tours.

We went out with Spirit to the Sombrero Reef and had a great time. The snorkeling was wonderful, we saw lots of fish of many varieties, including hundreds of yellowtail and angel fish, many large sized fish, such as barracuda. The visibility was very good. There was also a great variety of living coral. This was far better than snorkeling in Key Largo. In fact, no comparison. The captain and crew (lifeguard Donna) were highly professional. The ship was large and stable. My friend was bitten by a jellyfish, and Donna gave him expert and professional care. The cost was also very reasonable compared with other tours in the Keys.

Excellent instruction, great value. The dive master (snorkel master?) was knowledgeable and helpful especially for the first timers, no rush and they obviously care that you are both safe and enjoy yourselves. Only general point, if you haven't snorkeled/dived off a boat in open water, make sure the seas are reasonable height before going out, you'll be safe either way but it will definitely feel scarier with 2-3 foot seas. They mandate snorkeling vests be worn but they do not need to be inflated so you can still free dive if you so desire. Catamaran was stable and clean and fresh water rinses for gear as well as storage for belongings

This was my first time snorkeling, and I picked a doozy of a day to do it. The water was very choppy, with 3 foot waves. The lady handing taking the payment and handing out the wetsuits did a great job making sure the suits fit. Make sure you don't park in front of Porky's, or else you run the risk of getting towed. Parking is at a premium, but the employees will tell you where you need to park.
On the boat, the dive master went around to see who the first-timers were, and she gave excellent instructions. The captain gave us the history on the lighthouse, and answered any questions we had. The visibility for our trip was excellent. We saw a lot of different fish, and my son was fortunate to see an eel, and my husband saw some little sharks. The captain took the time to ask those of us not heaving off of the side of the boat or laying down fighting seasickness what we saw.
The crew made sure we were safe, and I felt like we were well taken care of, especially since it was so rough that morning. Even though I ended up getting sick (along with quite a few other people), an overall great experience.

It was a smorgasbord for these Saskatchewan eyes! They took the time to instruct and ensure safety and that it worked for each participant. Believe me, it was worth it and I would definitely go with them again. Thanks to banana bay resort for recommending them when asked. The wet suit provided is good to get used to water but when I took it off for the last 15 minutes it was not to cold.
5 stars all the way.

We just spent the afternoon on the Spirit snorkel trip (2 snorkellers with some experience, 1 never done it before). Really well looked after by the friendly crew, made first-timer feel comfortable. Visibility was great, sea a little choppy, but lots of fish to see (and crabs). Lovely location, overall good value and an afternoon well spent. Recommended.
