Owner description: Spirit Snorkeling of Marathon – providing daily snorkel trips to Sombrero Reef & Pirate’s Cove. Specializing in families and first time snorkelers, our friendly crew will take you on a fun filled adventure to the either the Sombrero Reef Marine Sanctuary and Lighthouse or to our special location on the Florida Bay—Pirate’s Cove. Sombrero Reef is the third largest barrier reef in the world and this beautiful 30 acre coral reef ranges from 2–30 feet deep with thousands of tropical fish. The Sombrero Lighthouse was built before the Civil War and today still helps mariners navigate the Keys with its light. Coral Reefs are among the most biologically diverse ecosystems on earth. They are second only to the tropical rain forests in the number of species they harbor, and indeed are sometimes called “The Rain Forests of the Sea”. You haven’t really seen the Keys until you’ve seen our under water areas. If the weather is too rough to go out to Sombrero Reef our dedicated crew will take you over to Pirate’s Cove, where the water is generally much calmer. Here you will see many species of tropical fish, under water plant life, lobsters and even sea horses. The water is quite shallow, making it a perfect spot to snorkel. Even sightseers enjoy our trips as many species can be seen from the boat. We take no scuba divers, we only go to shallow water snorkeling locations and Back Water Eco tours.

“Great time”
Reviewed August 18, 2012

We had a great time with Spirit Snorkeling, and this was our first snorkeling experience. We went on an afternoon trip to Sombrero Reef. The staff were all helpful and friendly. The water was a little rough, but not being used to it, we were both nauseous by the time we were done. She actually vomited as we were leaving the water due to the waves bouncing us up and down. I think most of the others in our group were not feeling well either, we left for shore once everyone was on board, and it was before our time was up. Regardless, the scenery down below was amazing. Lots of different fish, most of which I cannot name. The highlight was coming face to face with a large barracuda. I'll never forget it.

“Great snorkelling”
Reviewed August 15, 2012

We had great time on this trip we took our 2 children aged 6 and 10 our 6 year old had never snorkelled before and loved it. Our 10 year old had only ever snorkelled from the beach and also had a great time. The captain and dive master Donna were friendly and helpful making sure everyone had the correct equipment and explaining the safety rules. The water was lovely and clear, warm and there were absolutely loads of fish and coral to see. The only downside was a quite strong currrent but everyone regardless of experience had to have lifejackets (whether you choose to inflate is up to you) and no-one was allowed in the water without fins and you definitely needed them. Noodles were also available which was a great help with the children. There were 38 people on our boat and we had plenty of room. I cannot understand the negative reviews it is always a good idea to check the weather before booking especially if it has been unsettled recently and if you are taking you children. Overall a fabulous experience for us and our children.

“Great boat crew and fun trip”
Reviewed August 15, 2012

Was a little worried at the beginning of the trip, since the woman checking people in on shore was grumpy. As we walked up, she was on the phone with a customer, huffily explaining that she couldn't stay on the phone with them all day and they'd have to find it themself. Immediately after that, she hung up and announced that the head (bathroom) on the boat was broken so we all needed to go now. This was not looking good.

Never fear, though, once on the catamaran, things started to get better - much better. The captain was competent and friendly and Donna the divemaster was kind, gave everyone personal attention and was very knowledgeable. Fun trip on a gorgeous day.

“Nice people, nice trip”
Reviewed August 14, 2012

This was a very pleasant snorkeling trip. Capt. Herb and Donna were very friendly, talked with everyone and gave good information about the area we visited. Donna also asked everyone about their individual abilities and made sure that everyone was taken care of. I would definitely recommend this to anyone. This place was recommended by locals in the area as well.

“FANTASTIC CREW!!!! Always an amazing experience! A must while in the Keys!”
Reviewed August 12, 2012

Let me start by saying that I have had such wonderful experiences snorkeling with Spirit, that it has become a yearly adventure that my family looks forward to every spring. Not only are the reefs beautiful and teaming with amazing colorful fish, sting rays, turtles and eels, but the staff is incredible.

Carolyn will book your adventure and she is sweet as key lime pie. She saw how sunburnt my husband was at the start of our trip that when we docked 4 hours later she had driven back with fresh aloe from her plant for him and was waiting in the parking lot for us. Captain Herb is a hoot and is helpful and very knowledgable. If you have any questions at all he is more than happy to tell you about the land, sea, and creatures you spot on your trip.

This past spring we met a new crew member, Donna. We explained to Donna that we had gotten engaged while snorkeling with Spirit last year (yes - this happened, right in the water)! Donna went out of her way a few days later to drop by our condo and deliver a special Sea Bean (a seed that travels the Gulf Stream Current from as far away as the Amazon River and end up on the shores of the Keys) in the shape of a heart to us to congratulate us on our wedding. We could not have been more touched. I dont really know of any other business that is so genuinely kind!

I highly recommend taking your family on a trip with Spirit. I know that we will be back next April, and every April following....!
