Spent 2 nights rented rooms 1,4 and 5, it was rainy and windy and it made it even more beautiful. The inn is a place to totally relax and feel like you're on a tropical island without a care. The rooms were very clean and
decorated soooo cute. I am a person that hates dirty grout, or
peeling wallpaper. This place had none of it.
You can't swim there, nor can you swim most islands in the keys,
due to seaweed combing out dead critters, BUT the sunsets, and the
hammock, and the pier, and the coconut and banana trees just
outside your door, in a little tropical setting was so perfect,
I will make this my stop ALWAYS when I go to the keys.
Thank you White Sands and Thank you God for making this
world for Your pleasure and ours.

We just returned from White Sands Inn on Grassy Key and loved it! The place is sooo quiet. The cheaper rooms are small, but very adequate for my husband and I. Cozy, you might say. Everything about this place is cozy. And you feel you are a million miles away, on a small tropical isle. The water is gross, for sure, in the summer, because of massive amounts of grass and sea weed, but we knew that this place was not good for swimming before we booked. We headed to Bahia Honda State Park to swim. We took dozens of pictures of our "bungalow" room, and slept in the hammock in the early evening, and bought all of their postcards to send to our jealous friends. Highly recommend this place, if you are looking for something different than a Hilton or a Hyatt.

This little hide-away in the middle of the Florida Keys is the pearl in my oyster. It's owned & run by a gracious staff & they make you feel like you're part of their family. It's my winter "fix".

We stayed for three nights. We wanted to be somewhere in the middle so that we could go either direction without having to spend too much time on the road.

The first two nights, we stayed in Room 5. The picture makes the room look quite nice, and when you walk in, its almost like the picture. The room has a few problems. The one queen bed is set back (like inside what use to be a closet) so it doesn't get much air. The fan that was installed, was installed too close to the ceiling so it didn't really ventilate the room well. The mattresses were lumpy, even the daybed. The wall a/c unit made a lot of noise and is too small for the room, so it never got cool enough. This is in the spring, I can only imagine how hot it must be in the summer. We did not sleep either nights. Not even our daughter who sleeps through everything. The bathroom is extremely small, no room for toiletries, so you have to keep the toilet seat down, always or else things can fall in. And there were ants, very small ants, everywhere. Towels are very thin and sometimes never looked that clean, although they smelled clean. The unit itself was clean, but I definately wouldn't choose this room again. Oh, and if there are people above you, you hear all the moving around.

The last night, we stayed in Room 6, upstairs. Much better. Bigger rooms and wider rooms. The beds weren't as lumping, but squeaked with every turn. The a/c was newer therefore it cooled the room very well and it was a quieter machine. Fan worked great too, and was over the bed rather than the other unit, which it was center to the room, but it was over the eating area. Bad thing about this unit, ants and if you choose to use the microwave (which was old and rusting) the same time as using the coffee machine, the circuit would blow, because whoever wired this unit, ran the fridge, microwave and coffee on one line. If you blow the circuit, you have to go downstairs and tell the people and they have to reset it from whereever the main box is.

It is located in grassy key. They named this key "grassy" because it is. You cannot swim from the "beach". The pool was small, but nice and clean. The area itself was pretty quiet.

I live in South Florida and for the price we paid, it was ok, but it could have been better. They should spray for the ant problems. We do, and we live by the water, and we don't have ant problems. (Check you coffee machine before you make coffee, I guarantee you'll find at least one or two ants in there.) They should replace the a/c unit to a better one, and update the appliances such as the microwave oven and coffee machine. It doesn't cost that much to replace. Invest in better towels and redo the shower areas, especially room 5 where its still tile and the grout is getting moldy, too moldy to clean. The fridge was fine in both places and the stove, although small, is fine. Oh, don't use the toaster, its full of old bread crumbs...probably why there is an ant problem.

This is nicer than some of the places in the same area. The motels in the Marathon area are worse looking. At least, this place makes an attempt to look and feel nice. I wouldn't stay here again. When I come back to the Keys, I think I'll either stay in Islamorada or near Key West, there are more places to choose from.

The last writer was correct..you have to travel quite a ways to get to an eating area or laundry facility or grocery store because there is nothing in Grassy Key other than a few motels and/or inns. They could invest in a laundry room for guests to use, that would be a plus.

Very friendly and unobtrusive management. They get right on any requests. Can't say enough good things about the management.
Tropical spirit (laid back), but wasn't uncomfortable with having kids around (in other words, not the I Hate Kids crowd). Decor of rooms! Relative comfort of rooms. Off the beaten track (it is a drive to the restaurants and attractions, which could be a plus or minus). Free paddle boats and kayaks! Place was sold out, but you'd never know it. Quiet and uncrowded.

No beach (but that's the norm on the keys). Could really use bicycles. It's pain to go into town and hire a bike when you just want to hop on for a short ride. The closest (and most reasonable) bike rental doesn't have kids bikes or baby seats, so we never rode. Pool is pretty small and no whirlpool. almost threadbare towels.

ROOMS: We first stayed in Unit A, which is in a converted house divided into 3 units. It was newly outfitted and decorated very tastefully. The beds were excellent, as was the kitchen. It was filled with light and quiet inside (with doors closed). The downside is that unless you rent the entire house you are sharing the patio with the other guests. I mean sharing. There is no privacy. In our case, the folks were nice, but all 4 chain smoked and our lungs were aching, our clothes stunk and in general we were smoked out. They also partied until the wee hours. We had to keep our sliding doors closed to reduce the noise and it was so stuffy inside that we had to run the a.c. rather than enjoy the soft Florida breeze. I am an architect and there are two easy solutions: put sliders across from the existing ones for a cross breeze and put Unit A's patio out the other side (using the new sliders). Unless we took over the whole house I wouldn't stay in that unit again, despite the luxury and comfort.
Room 7 (great heron room). When our party reduced we moved to this room. It is loaded with character and has a great deck. But, it is definitely roughing it comapred with A. The bathroom is tiny and needs updating (tiny prefab shower, etc). The kitchen lacks counters and has almost no equipment. They seem to buy the kitchen supplies at the dollar store. The toaster was so cheap you had to hold the lever down (and it was brand new). Unless you bring your own knives, cutting board and just about everything else, you cannot cook in this room. It also needs floor mats!
So, plusses and minuses. But the plusses won. We were charmed and relaxed and will return next year.
p.s. it is on Grassy (not Duck) Key.

We've been going to the White Sands Inn since the year 2000. We find it to be the greatest place to stay in the middle keys. The owners and staff are just excellent. They treat you like family. The grounds are beautiful and the pool is fantastic. I can't say enough wonderful things about this place. In fact I have my 2006 reservations made already. I'm looking forward to visiting them again.

Just arrived home from White Sands. When I arrived there I thought oh geez have I made a mistake. At first I was dissappointed. Web pics are never what they seem to be. After the first day there I was happy. The place was clean and staff friendly. The Guest were great too. A great place to kick back and relax.
