“Restored our faith”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 2, 2014

My wife and I have been going to the Cheeca Lodge since '06, before their big fire and have always gotten first rate service. We've always loved the place, and still do, however we recently made the mistake of staying there this past Labor Day weekend.

Every poorly disciplined child in Florida was staying there and while waiting to be seated in the restaurant the hostess seated four adults and 6 of the aforementioned poorly disciplined children.

We got up to go somewhere else for dinner, but Gabe, the restaurant manager, asked us to stay and that he would take care of us. He told the hostess to seat us in "the special place in the garden" and make sure Madie was our waitress.

We were taken to a very nice, very out of the way table on the beach and our waitress, Madie was right there asking for our drink order. She proved herself to be pleasant, knowledgable about everything on the menu, including the wine list and very capable. My beer was brought before the bottle had a chance to start sweating in the 91 degree heat and our ice cream desert didn't even start melting by the time she brought it to us.

During dinner my wife and I commented several times that what Gabe did to accomodate us, and the stellar service Madie provided is why we keep coming back to Cheeca Lodge.

Our enjoyable Cheeca weekend culminated when Earl at the front gate offered my wife a cold bottle of water after her run. "I've always got some here so just ask and I'll take care of you." He's been on duty several times we've been there over the years and always seems to remember us. He provides enough specifics each time so I know he's not yanking my chain.

The actions of three people that ensure we always stay at Cheeca Lodge: Gabe, Madie and Earl.

Room Tip: Get the Premier Ocean Front room on the 4th floor. They're the most expensive but the ocean vie...

It is always a pleasure to hear from our treasured repeat guests, especially when they have such wonderful things to say about our island paradise. We are very proud and honored to have Gabe, Madie and Earl on our talented staff, they are three of our gems and we are glad they took such good care of you over the busy Labor Day Holiday. It is great to here that you will always chose Cheeca as your Keys vacation spot, and we look forward to having you back. Thank you so much for writing.

Spacious, well appointed room with a million dollar ocean view. Could not have been nicer. The staff made great suggestions for dining. Breakfast was delicious. Stayed here several times and the stays get better and better. This is a favorite of ours...

God forbid that you try to cancel four days before your scheduled stay due to a major family emergency! We have stayed at this resort over six times in the last few years and are regular guests. My mother in law is in the ICU and we had to delay our trip. We were told that we had to reschedule our trip within 30 days or we would lose our entire prepayment! Hopefully it will work out but now I don't really want to go back.

After many years of wanting to experience Cheeca Lodge, we recently did so to celebrate our anniversary. Our accommodations were a suite. The layout and furnishings were fine. Housekeeping was a major problem. After checking in I noticed a gross amount of mildew(mold?) in the shower. I saw one of the housekeeping staff near my room and advised her of the situation. She seemed surprised and concerned and said she would" get some Clorox to take care of it". Well, in short, it never got taken care of. Then came the towel/washcloth/bath mat issue. We were always short on one of the three. One night when we returned to the room, after room service, we had no towels, no bath mats and one wash cloth. After making a call to the front desk, a staff member brought us two damp towels and washcloths. No bath mat.
There was always sand in the room after room service and this was noticed immediately upon entering, and not brought in by us.
Room Air Conditioner: The loudest a/c I have ever heard in any room! Unbelievable and did not keep the room cool.
Ceiling fan and Light in Living Room: Funky controls - obviously something wrong with the controller or wiring. One night while lying awake in bed around 3:00AM(thanks to the A/C) I saw the fan light illuminate. Stayed on for a while then back off. This is not normal.
The above is not acceptable at any price, much less $500.00 night!
Resort Fee: $39.00 - maybe they should raise that some more to fund additional towels & staff.
Tiki Bar: Food and drinks were fair at best. The help seemed to be in training and screwed up the bill twice, making the same mistakes on two separate visits.
Beach: Having visited the Keys on many occasions I knew not to expect much with the beach. It was OK for lounging but that's about it.
Pools: No towels -
Grounds: Nice - everything else was a letdown and huge disappointment.
We have visions of never leaving the property but did so everyday in a effort to find something to make our trip a worthwhile experience.
I have hear that Cheeca is going through some "management changes..." Lord knows they certainly need to. It starts at the top, and certain ones are definitely asleep at the wheel.
We had heard so many good things about Cheeca through the years - this was the most we have every paid to stay at a resort and by far was the least bang for the buck we have ever had.
I met some folks while in Islamorada that were Cheeca Club(?) members. They willingly and strongly expressed their negative experiences about the service, food, lack of hospitable service and how Cheeca has been "going down" recently.
We left there is a state of disbelief. What a waste of money.

Room Tip: Don't stay in the one we had.

We read your review with great dismay and disappointment. We are so sorry we did not meet your expectations, especially on your special anniversary day. That is really a shame, and we apologize. On the bright side, we are glad you found our accommodations and grounds to be nice. You are absolutely correct, success starts at the top and we are indeed under new leadership. We are addressing each and every one of your concerns, one by one. We are undergoing staffing and departmental improvements in housekeeping and our other departments that will soon alleviate the shortcomings you experienced. We are very confident that we are in the process of returning Cheeca to the treasured gem she once was, and we encourage you to come back again in the near future so you can see the progress we have made. We take your comments to heart and we thank you for writing.

This is clearly an upscale and beautifully landscaped facility. However, there are some drawbacks in comparison to other resorts of the same level. First, there is no access to the spa facilities unless you book a "treatment". You cannot simply go to the spa for a steam and shower. This is a major weakness for a resort of this caliber. Also, the grounds are beautiful, but very spread out. So if you are going to the pool or the "beach", you have to walk quite a bit. Makes it inconvenient in the morning when you want a cup of coffee and you are walking the grounds to get one. There is also no beach that is suitable for swimming, however, there is an area where you can layout. Otherwise, if you are a fisherman, this resort is great. There are also unlimited use of bikes, games, golf, and tennis. I had always wanted to stay here. Now that I have, I probably will not return.

Room Tip: If you can get a room in the main lodge, would probably be best.

We appreciate your feedback and happy you found Cheeca to be an upscale, beautifully landscaped property. We do apologize that you were not able to enjoy the steam rooms and indoor showers at the Spa. This facility is very intimate and it would not be enjoyable for our Spa guests if we permitted the entire resort to utilize its amenities. We try to create the most tranquil experience possible at the Spa and overcrowding the steam rooms would taint the atmosphere. We do offer shower facilities outside at the Spa pool for our guests.
Cheeca has 27 acres of lushly landscaped gardens, and many of our rooms are situated throughout this tropical paradise. We do provide coffee and tea service in every room, and coffee is available via room service. In addition, we provide complimentary coffee at the outside lobby terrace every morning.
The type of beach found at Cheeca is typical for any beach in the Florida Keys, which are a string of tiny islands comprised of ancient coral rock. The only living coral reef in the continental U.S. is located just off our shores. The reef is surrounded by crystal clear waters and creates spectacular fishing, snorkeling and diving adventures, but it also prevents surf-like waves from reaching our shores and creates the type of beach found here in the Keys. We are very sorry ours did not meet your expectations.
We thank you for writing, and hope you will consider another visit to our island paradise.

Love driving to Islamorada for a weekend.
It is not Key West, it's more elegant less touristy with amazing sunsets.
The hotel is nice, great beach, beach amenities.
Food is like anywhere in a large family hotel. Go to a restaurant on the bay. "Moring" I thinks is the name, gear food there and sunsets are picturesque.
Hotel is great for a weekend if you live in Florida.

We had an ocean view premier suite for 4 nights. We were greeted upon check in with champagne. Kerry couldn't have been more pleasant or helpful.

The room was spotless and vast; very comfortable and had a fridge, massive TV with DVD player, Starbucks coffee etc, his and hers sinks, massive shower and a bath on the balcony - which also came with furniture.

We ate at Limoncellos and Atlantic's Edge; both very nice and worth a visit. Staff that worked here were very good.

The kayaking, tennis, DVD film rental etc - included in the resort fee - was easy to access and well enjoyed.

All staff I encountered were friendly with the exception of those in the shop - maybe bad timing.

I don't see how you could either moan about this hotel or fail to relax here; granted I didn't use the kids pool and the pool service - if it exists - didn't materialise at all throughout the stay but didn't detract for me - you could just go up and get a drink.

I would recommend the oceanfront suite 100% - just amazing to relax at night in bed and see the sea and the palm trees.

I personally wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel.
