“Confused. Lack of direction diminishes the food.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 22, 2011

Indecision is the theme of this restaurant. They cannot decide if they are a Japanese sushi bar, or a local surf 'n' turf joint. It affects the decor (which is muddled Japanese meets Home Depot), the menu (which jumps from burgers to sushi to grilled local fish to Peking duck to roast lamb) and the food (I feel sorry for the chef who has to attempt all these styles). It is not fusion food. It is schizophrenic, 'jack of all trades, master of none' style catering. The lack of integrity affects the food they serve of course, and our service was well-meaning, but utterly chaotic and confused too.

I guess this is the result of being located in a small town with lots of vacationing one-time visitors, but I can't help but feel that they could do better if they took some braver decisions with this place.

“Excellent food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 19, 2011

We visited as a party of eight with a young child. Must say we weren't sure what to expect and like many restaurants in the area the menu had a fishy theme. However, we like fish and must say the food was the best we have had so far. Slightly more delicate than your usual American pile the plate high with fries places. All food was cooked to perfection and accompanied by varieties of mash including lobster mash and garlic mash. Also served with beautiful vegetables (something we often crave on holiday in the States). Large selection of beer and also sushi if you fancy and a lovely kids menu. Excellent.

“Mount Fuji Hogfish........YUM!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 28, 2011

First-time visitor to Kaiyo, and can't wait to go back! Very flavorful Miso soup, amazing Hogfish topped with a scallop and shrimp stuffing over jasmine rice (they can do any of their fresh fish this way), and a home-made dessert list that was so appealing it was almost stressful to pick just one! (White chocolate macadamia nut pie!) Decor and design all great, beautiful place.
On a final note, the person I was dining with has some dietary restrictions, and our server, Danielle, was most helpful and patient. Excellent experience.

“Fancy food, but overall disappointing"”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 26, 2011

After reading some very good reviews on Trip Advisor, we decided to eat here. The table was not a good one, way in the back of the restaurant near the back door. Our waitress seemed a bit drugged or drunk, or maybe just spaced out, and was far from personable.

The appetizers were good, I should have stayed with them. I had the Wahoo with, I believe "volcano" sauce? The sauce did not make it with the fish, it was a very strange combination. The desert was fair, but all in all not a memorable or exciting experience I was hoping for.

Our enjoyment was further marred by a badly behaved child at the next table who was practically at our table since they were so close together. This certainly contributed to a lack of atmosphere from which, I am afraid, this restaurant will alway suffer.

Might stop for lunch there, but would go elsewhere for dinner.

“Totally Awesome Food and Service”

We truly enjoyed our night out at this restaurant. The "Big Ars Shrimp" were absolutely wonderful and everyone's dinner was extraordinary. The service was excellent.
