Had no idea of this tragic event occurring several years before my birth. Dedicated only two years after the event, this beautiful monument is right on Hwy. 1 in Islamorada. Very moving and emotional, well worth a convenient stop.

Hurricanes are our history and those who died while help build this area nee a better dedication. I recommend stopping but there's nothing else there. Try not o be tok disappointed and also please disregard the liquor store cross the street. The village battled over that and if course $ won. Sad! This could be a very informative area for all to learn about our history

So, I grew up in the Keys, Key Largo to be exact, however seeing a picture of this monument, I asked, what is this? I got exasperated explanations of how this was an icon of the upper keys, been there forever, THE hurricane monument. Funny, I had to Google search to even find out where it was. Nope, still never remember seeing it. Like the other reviewer, I don't mean any disrespect, its just not that noticable.

I mean no disrespect to those who lost their life to this horrible hurricane. If you are making a special trip to see this. Don't.

This was on our list of things we really wanted to see based on reading about it in travel books. We stayed in Islamorada and drove past this several times without realizing it was there. It is right on highway 1 and is a very small patch of land with a small momument.

I would suggest buying one of the keys history books covering the details of the hurricane instead of making the trek.
