“The Stuff Local Legends are Made of . . .”

Any Keys local will tell you that we love a change of pace from the fish shacks and MEAT is so much more than just a change of pace. The team there is working hard to be the best at what they are - a charming spot to grab a great pint and an extraordinary burger - and are absolutely not trying to be something they aren't. MEAT isn't fancy, not fussy, just awesome. For a locale that drinks so much beer, the beer selection around the Keys is disappointing. MEAT provides an oasis of some of the country's best micro brews, serves them on tap and rotates them frequently. (not to mention other country's brews - Chimay, on tap, and in the proper chalice!) The "Juicy Lucy" burger is one of the best I've ever had, and the truffle fries cooked in duck fat, well, they are just addictive. Stop by and catch a game on TV, try something new (or not new - fried chicken every day after 5 until it's gone - get yours early) and enjoy some of the most personalized service anywhere. This is one of our go-to spots for entertaining friends or family when they're visiting and tired of seafood because we know they will enjoy a great burger (or house-smoked pulled pork, or a hotdog, or so many more meaty treats), tasty, creative appetizers and a cold brew. Go soon and often, I know I will!

“What a Joke”
Reviewed January 17, 2013

It is a misnomer to all this a restaurant!, it's an upscale expensive McDonalds. You ask the cashiere for a menu, tel him/her what you want, seat yourself at a little table or bar, wait for you food and then go pick it up at the service point. Really impressed that we didn't have to cleanour table. The Burger was really excellent and justfies the high price, but this is not a place to go for a dining experienc!

Thank you for taking the time to review our establshment, even though we didn't quite appreciate your title "What a Joke". To address your response. All businesses that serve food are called restaurants (yes even McDonalds is a "fast food" restaurant). Many of the highest rated "restaurants" on Tripadvisor are quick service cafes, food trucks or food carts. Each experience is different, unique and special in their own way. What makes each good one important is their quality of food and service and the feeling you take away with you.
M.E.A.T. IS an upscale fast food establishment and our goal is to serve the freshest burgers, pulled pork ( which we smoke in house), duck fat fried french fries, bacon (which we also make in house) lobster rolls, etc. We even make our own ketchup, mustard, ice cream, pork rinds and dessert. We're glad you thought your burger was "really excellent", our Angus burgers are hand patted and served fresh, not frozen and cooked to your preferred temperature, unlike many other "fast food" establishments.
In order to serve as many guests as we can as quickly as possible, we need to have customers come up to the counter when they're ready to order, we get their drinks and bring their food out to them.
We hope you understand our concept better and return to enjoy more of our great food and drink. And yes, we do clear the tables after you're done, as quickly as we can for the next guests.

“Fantastic Burgers; great beers”
Reviewed January 16, 2013

After loading up on seafood for 4 days straight, you need a burger and fries. And this is the place to get your fix.

The burgers are cooked to perfection, and the homemade ketchup and mustard are a nice touch.

Beer selection is also very good, with a lot of obscure microbrewery selections.

“Great burgers, but don't order the upgraded bistro fries”
Reviewed January 16, 2013

We had a group of four, tried three different types of burgers, they were all excellent. The night we were there, they had lamb burgers, which were custom made lamb mixed fresh at the restaurant. Definitely try it if available.

The one downside to the restaurant was the "do you want..." upgrade. When we ordered, asked if we wanted to upgrade the fries for $2.50 to the truffled bistro fries with parmesan and rosemary. Sure, go ahead. That was a mistake. First of all, they use the exact same fries as normal, just using truffle oil, parmesan and rosemary. The fries were just OK, nothing really special, definitely not worth paying for the upgrade. I assumed (incorrectly) that it would be something over the top for that much of an upgrade price. Also, they didn't ask if we wanted cole slaw when we ordered (which was the other option other than fries), just if we wanted to upgrade the fries. So we wasted money on upgraded fries that we really didn't eat. Cole slaw would have been a much better option.

Only 4 or 5 tables, so not much seating available unless you want to sit at the bar. Pretty casual, order at the counter, they do bring out the orders to your table. Good choice of beer and wine.

Great choice for casual burger place in Islamorada.

“Upper Keys Needed This!”
Reviewed January 14, 2013

This is definitely a restaurant that the upper keys needed, and I can't think of any other business like it. It is great to finally have some different craft beers on tap, instead of the normal Bud Light or other american standards you find at every place down here. Great sandwiches as well, and everything is of homemade quality.

Only items I can suggest is more waitstaff on hand when it is busy (fine when I was there, but if it was semi-crowded I could see how the ability to give good service would go down hill), longer hours (if this place was open until 1 or 2 am on weekends I know where I would go everytime for late night eats), and maybe some more decor on the walls.

It was a bit pricier than I had hoped, but for what I received I'm not complaining. Definitely will be back.
