Review of Islamorada Fishing

Islamorada Fishing
Reviewed May 18, 2013

There is no place to fish in the world than Islamorada in the Florida Keys. Islamorada has some of the most exciting bonefish, snook, sailfish, shark and tarpon fishing you could ever find. It's location with the Florida Bay on the west coast and the Atlantic Ocean on the East, you can experience catching so many different species to fish! There are hundreds of charters to take you out with the best captains in the keys. Robbie's and Whale harbor are my favorite marinas. I prefer fishing the flats on the bay side and getting close to the Everglades. Also, fishing right by the bridges always works. I will always be making it down to Islamorada to go fishing and hopefully someday can move there and fish all day!

My son and i did two fishing charter trips - one with Captain Brian McCadie and first mate Daniel and one with Jason. Both trips were great. And with Jason, we scored TWO Nurse Sharks, the larger about 9 feet. My 14 year old was in heaven! Liz at Robbie's worked with us to pick just the right trips and at just the right times. She worked extra hard on last minute notice when we decided to do our second trip same day!

We took a 6 1/2 trip on the Kay K IV with Captain Don and a fill-in mate Jesse. We had a really nice day. We were excited to say the least. The Kay K IV is a 40 ft boat with a nice salon - that was air conditioned. We brought our 6, 8, & 10 year old grandsons who did almost all the fishing.
We caught mainly king fish and snapper. Capt. Don didn't hesitate to move the boat from place to place to find the fish. Jesse kept very busy keeping the lines baited and helping the kids bring in their catch. These fish were perfect - the kids weren't going to be able to pull in the big daddies. The only thing I wished would have been for Capt. Don and Jesse to explain a little more what they were doing and why - the boys were eager to learn and wanted to be part of everything. In all fairness, we didn't ask them to. Anyway, we had a nice time and certainly recommend this charter.

I first would like to say that I am an avid fisherman and travel all over the world with my father and our friends to sport fish for all different types of species. We have been coming back to fish in Islamorada for the past 20 plus years and have used the Seahorse everytime since then. We did take a bit of a hiatus these past few years as we had heard that the captain we used to use no longer was around and had sold the ship.

However over the past few years Capt. Rick has taken over and truly made the Seahorse the best fishing vessel around. I can tell you that Capt. Rick and his mate Jeremy were probably THE BEST fishing captain and mate we have ever had and we will continue to fish with him for the many years to come. He was persistant in finding fish and both were extremely professional from the get go. We cought a variety of Tuna, Cobia, Amberjack and even Toros snappers as well.

If you are looking for a great fishing experience the Seahorse is the way to go! I can promise you that you will enjoy your adventure and your cooler will be full!

Capt. Rick with Sea Horse Charters and 1st mate, Jeremy, are the real deal and the best fishing charter in the Florida Keys. This charter was March 2, 2013. We started out and we tried to get bait at our usual stop, but the ballyho were not there this morning. So we went to another stop and we were able to get our ballho there. Capt. Rick and Jeremy never, ever gave up; they continued to strive to do their best. We started trolling for sailfish and it was very slow. Finally, around 10:30 am, we saw our 1st sailfish! Jeremy threw a perfect strike and we had the sailfish on. We fought it for 15 minutes and it came out of the water, danced, and it spit out the bait. We didn't see another sailfish, so around 12:30 pm, Capt. Rick took us toa patch reef to catch some Jumbo Mangrove Snapper. We were there for about 45 minutes. While at the patch reef, Capt. Rick and Jeremy taught us how to take catching Mangrove Snapper to a new level! At 1:30 pm, Capt. Rick said pull in the lines and we are going for the afternoon bite of sailfish. Sure enough, around 2:30 pm we had our first hit of the afternoon bite. We landed it and it was a 27 lb black fin tuna! Then fifteen minutes later, we had a sailfish strike on the right rigger. Again, 10 seconds later we had our second sailfish strike on the left rigger! After a long day of hard work by Capt. Rick and Jeremy, their efforts paid off as we hooked double header sailfish. We battled both sailfish for 45 minutes. We had a leader touch on the left rigger sailfish, and then finally we brought the sailfish on the right rigger into the boat for pictures and released the fish.
We had an wesome day on the water with Capt. Rick and Jeremy. You won't find a captain and crew that works harder or has more energy than these men; they are by far the best captain and crew we have ever encountered. This is still the best fishing charter in the Florida Keys, hands down. If you don't book with them, it is your loss! We will be back!!!

Rick, Brandon W. Quentin, and Brandon D.
