We rented a tandem kayak from the Kayak Shack and paddled over to Indian Key. Hands down, the most fun we had on our trip to the Keys! We'd never kayaked before and the guys were great about setting us up and giving us directions to the kayak landing on Indian Key. They were very willing to set up a sit-on-top kayak for us even after they'd prepped a sit-in kayak.

The water isn't more than a few feet deep once you get started toward Indian Key. We paddled over to the island close to high tide, and it was a little work but we got there within 30-35 minutes. The trip back was much easier, not having to fight the current.

The snorkeling at Indian Key was quite good, too. Saw some smaller tropical fish and a small nurse shark. Another couple showed up while we were there, but for the most part it felt like we had the island to ourselves. You can see US 1 off in the distance but the sound of the traffic doesn't carry to the island. The "beach" where you get in the water is little more than a bench and an opening in the mangroves. The island was swarmed with white butterflies the day we were there, too.

Cannot recommend this trip highly enough for outdoors/nature-types and people looking to get away from it all. When I think of the Keys, this is the place I'll be thinking of from now on.

My family (two teenage boys and wife) thoroughly enjoyed our outing at the Kayak Shack. The mangrove tunnels were unlike anything we've ever experienced. The owners (John) were very pleasant and customer-oriented -- clearly focused on ensuring a great time. I recommend this experience while in Islamorada -- great way to spend half a day. Plan so you can eat at Robbie's either before or after your outing -- fish tacos are outstanding!

We spent the day at the kayak shack. We rented kayaks and received maps and great tips on where to go. We went through the mangrove canopy system, then to INdian state park. In between we had a great lunch at the cute little outdoor cafe. After the trip we sat at the bar and enjoyed a drink. There are vendors selling t shirts, hats and an area to feed the Tarpon fish while pelicans watch and nearly pose for the camera. Staff were very helpful and laid back. A great taste of the keys. They also rent other types of boats, paddle boards, jet skis etc. lots to do for all ages. Also watched the charter boats come in and clean their catch for the day

Firstly, Lynn was incredible!! She hooked us up with a kayak within minutes of arriving. She gave us maps and sent us on our way. My bf and I kayaked through the mangroves and saw all kinds of wildlife. It was incredible. We then took a small break and then headed out to Indian Key (a remote island). The whole experience was romantic and exciting. We traveled just the 2 of us, and the entire time.....we kept asking each other...."is this really happening? How awesome is this??"

The price was awesome, and the staff was just so wonderful to us. They gave us a cooler to use and accommodated our every need. They didn't charge us for the time we spent on land taking a break. Thank you Lynn!!!!!

Take a camera, some fruit and drinks, a hat, and lots of sunscreen....... You will remember your time on the kayak forever!!! So fun!!!!!

We planned this outing based on the reviews read here and it definately was not a disappointment. The second day of our trip intended to do the self-guided trip to Indian key and then the mangroves. A little windy so the Kyak Shack didn't want to send us to Indian key so we just did the mangrove tunnels and had an absolute BLAST! Went back the last day of our trip and went to Indian key, very enjoyable and relaxing day on the island. We went early at high tide and the snorkeling around the island was great, hundreds of fish hanging out under the rock ledges, lots of sponges and lobster. The staff was wonderful.
