“Pleasant stay”
Reviewed February 13, 2014

This is the second time I chose this hotel for our company's incentive trip. Beautiful room, great staff, excellent service, and everyone enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere the resort has provided.

Special thanks to Alan and all of the staff that made our stay a pleasant one. Cara, Maydel, Roy, Dmitry, Manny, Toni, they deserve a special recognition for their professionalism and support.

We will return.

This is a very nice hotel and the staff is wonderful, but it is a little overpriced for what you get. I had the pleasure of visiting Key West for a much needed weekend getaway, but I think next time I will try to save a little money.

Thank you for staying with us and we hope you enjoyed the nice weather while here and yes since it stays so warm here while the rest of the country is cold the demand is high. For lower rates I suggest you pick dates in our slower season.

My husband and I were looking for a warm place to stay away from the Atlanta cold in February for our "babymoon." This resort was pefect. We stayed for 6 nights on points, but upgraded to a suite for our entire stay. The suite is awesome - full kitchen with SS applicances, dining area, living room, double-decker sun deck, and 1.5 bathrooms.

Yes, you're away from all of the nightlight on Duval, but the hotel offers complimentary shuttle to and from Duvall street every hour until 11:00pm, so it wasn't an issue for us. The van drivers were really nice and accommodating - oftentimes a bus would fill up before everyone got on during peak hours (dinner time) so the hotel would send out another bus right away.

I would disagree with other reviews that the pool is small - it's actually pretty big and you have beach access which is very rare when staying at other resorts near Duval. We rented bikes from the hotel 2 days during our stay and rode up the street (20 minute slow bike ride) to some of the larger beaches which was a nice day trip. The public beaches have chairs for rent and offer some excursions (jet skis, banana boats, parasailing, ect.). There's also quite a few restaurants on the way to eat at. The food served poolside at the hotel was great - I think we got the cheeseburger a couple of times because it was so good.

We never ate at the hotel restaurant at night but we ate there every morning for breakfast. Breakfast is served buffet style (free for continential if you're a gold or platnium Marriott member and only $5 extra if you want made-to-order omlets, waffels, and "hot" buffet). The dining room staff was fantastic. Our waiter at breakfast was named Dmitry - great attitude and catered to our needs. Every day after we were finishing up our meals he'd ask if we'd like a juice or coffee to-go. The chefs are also great - I liked to make english muffins with egg/cheese and the chef always remembered what kind of cheese I wanted before I had to ask.

Due to an ice storm that hit Atlanta, our flights were cancelled and were forced to stay another night. James (the reservations guy) was very accomodating in making sure we were taken care of. Upon checkout, I left some clothing behind and a few hours later I received a call from the front desk letting me know - so considerate!

The negatives - I do think the "beach-side" in the hotel's name is a bit deceptive. There is a beach but it is small, but again, most hotels in the Keys aren't afforded expansive beaches. Even though we were in a suite, our room overlooked the pool area, offering a partial ocean view, so it would have been nicer to have a full ocean view. In one instance, there was a very rude girl working at the front desk (Christy?) - we were trying to rent some bikes but the "host" guy wasn't around and she was very unprofessional about handling the situation.

We stayed for three nights recently. Although far from the center of the town, the shuttle bus was phenomenal. It was great and Manny was fantastic. The bellmen and breakfast staff were helpful and very friendly. The food was great -- we only had breakfast though. If you have a family or do not like lots of partying, this is a great place.

The concierge is great -- Toni! Her recommendations are spot on. We also took the jetski tour which is offered there at the Gulf of Mexico -- on the beach behind the hotel. Really amazing.

The issues were the following --- the front desk staff was really not friendly just perfunctory. Some people were offered champagne on arrival and we were not. Directions were confusing to the room. Although Marriott members, we felt like we were intruding just to check in! The map was practically thrown at us. We are nice and quiet - never complained or argued. Very strange.

Our room was clean but small and no extras. Just one coffee and decaf for two people. For almost 450 a night, it seemed rather cheap and when we asked for more, none came. We had two very thin and worn towels too. Last point, we had a drink at the bar one night coming back early from Duval. The bartenders were so busy chatting with each other and one guy at the end of the bar that it took 15 minutes for service. Weird and the bartender was so bored, she couldn't even say, "hey how are you?" Not what we expect from a Marriott.

Room Tip: If you stay here - get a deal and take a suite. They are much nicer than a room.

We actually spent a few weeks agonizing over where to stay on Key West and debating if we should be spending time on other Keys.. since we had never been to that part of Florida before. We were only staying two nights, so it honestly came down to price and we ended up using a Priceline express deal. Based on the location and rating on Priceline, we thought we'd have a pretty good chance of getting booked at this Marriott. After the long drive from Miami to Key West, we were surprised at how quickly the Marriott comes up on your right when to get there. We really weren't expecting much, just a typical Marriott- so imagine our surprise when we were offered champagne at check-in from some of the nicest front desk staff we've encountered! At the time, I assumed it was meant for other people and they were just being courteous by offering it to us as well. I quickly realized, that probably wasn't the case. After some discussion about where our room and other things were located, they agreed to waive the parking fee (as we thought it was included). We found our room, in the building closest to the main lobby building and headed to our 3rd floor room. We had a regular king room facing the street- no upgrade, but it absolutely felt like it was. The room was beautiful, the bathroom was large and it all felt very luxurious. There was plenty of space in the wall-to-wall tile room to fit the king bed, end tables, lounge chair, small circle table, desk and chair, ottoman, dresser AND us/our luggage! Being those that prefer not to have staff enter the room when we are not there, we made a call to request additional shampoo on our second day and offered to pick it up at the front desk- the staff was so kind and wasn't having any of that.. they brought it up and when they arrived, apologized (I couldn't think of anything to apologize for and I mentioned that to them) and even offered fresh towels. I accepted the shampoo but we were absolutely fine with everything else. I thought the property overall was very nice.. I know there are some mixed reviews about the pool/hot tub area- but we thought it was really great. I do not know what it is like in the middle of the day or if there are a lot of families, as we were away from the hotel, but when we arrived at the pool just before 6pm, it was completely empty- save for a few people at the bar. The beach area seemed nice to sit out and watch the water, which we didn't end up doing, but it is worth it to note that it isn't a beach to swim off of (if you were expecting to be able to do that.. we were not). We did not eat at the hotel, nor did we take advantage of the shuttle (we drove), but it was really great to see that both of those options were available. The Marriott is about a 20 minute drive from Duval St., and anything else on that side of the island so you get the opportunity to see everything else along the way as well. Our moderate expectations were completely blown away- and we were sure to mention that upon check out as well. The property spoke for itself and the staff just added to our great experience. If we could have stayed longer, we absolutely would have. I have already recommended this hotel to 2 people I know thinking about visiting the Keys.

Green Features: Pretty typical for Marriotts... if you want fresh towels, place the ones you used on the ground- otherwise hang them up and use them again.

We assumed that a room which goes for over 400 per night would have at least a partial view Wrong, the "standard" room does not refer to the bedding or size but to the fact you have no usable window AT ALL! The standard rooms are set up along the perimeter with walkways running by the rooms, similar to a 69.00 hotel on the interstate. If you are in the room and do not want everyone peering right in. you must close the curtains and turn on the lights which felt claustrophobic and confining.. Our room overlooked a wall and a busy parking lot/driveway.
Management did not have any other rooms available but offered to "release" us. Spent most of the first day trying to find another hotel, no luck. As the other review stated, we stayed out of the room as much as possible. we left a day early and stayed in Miami.

Room Tip: DO NOT book a standard room unless you would like to keep the curtains closed and have NO view, Sin...

Thank you for your comments and as others have pointed out all standard rooms do not have a view, they are a basic hotel room. This property has 129 one, two and three bedroom suites plus 93 king standard rooms and this time of year every hotel in Key West runs 100% occupied. I suggest if a view is a priority you considering the suites at time of reservations as we have more suites than standard rooms. We are sorry we could not have offered you any thing else during this very high demand period during this time of year when our weather is beautiful and great days to be outdoors.

Very disappointed. Horrible remote location. Area loaded with construction. Smallest pool I have ever seen. Sun for like 4 hours, not enough chairs at pool. Beach is a tiny sandbox. Deceptive advertising. Would highly NOT recommend!
