Owner description: OPEN RAIN OR SHINE Come have fun with talking, laughing and dancing parrots. Join her at 10 to 11 AM daily for Nancy's special presentation "Parrot 101" or "Storytelling" where guests can take pictures of un-caged birds, hold them and ask questions. We gladly welcome families with children and animal lovers to the Secret Garden to interact with our endangered South & Central American macaws and other parrots. Open 10 to 3 daily. Guided 10 to 11, Self-guided 11 to 3 PM. Educational material for each parrot is offered. Help inspire the birds by spending time with them. Certainly worth a visit! Nancy is lovely and so are the birds. The birds are rescued and when you visit you're supporting a mission. Off the beaten path and well worth the time, effort and money.

Nancy's Secret Garden may be smaller, but it's no less enchanting. The parrots - some rescues, some near extinction - are worth the visit. If you're not already a bird lover you will be. Nancy is a very special lady who has dedicated her life to these birds. I agree with an earlier review....it's about protection. Forget the smaller garden and enjoy an afternoon with these beautiful, personable exotic parrots.

Even if the Lonely Planet guidebook rates this place among Key West's top sights it is really dissapointing. It looks like if some parrot-lover suffering of Diogenes syndrome charges you $10 to visit her backyard.
I really don't get the point of why this place is still receiving visits and why she stills asking people for their money when there is no "SecretGarden" anymore.
It's just a messy small backyard packed up with parrot cages. We didn't evenget to see a single orchid!
By the way, we didn't see her,but our $20 dissapeared in less than the five minutes we spent visiting the place!

Nancy's Secret Garden has fallen on hard times. Nancy went through a foreclosure, lost most of her garden to developers, and keeps a minimal back yard full of parrots only by the grace of a reverse mortgage. The garden is gone except for a couple of orchids. There are a dozen cages full of "rescued" parrots. The steep admission price, $10, makes it not worth a visit unless you perchance want to subsidize Nancy's hobby.
You can no longer get there from Free School Lane. Go around the block to 518 Elizabeth street and enter backwards (beside the house).
No facilities.

If you're expecting something elaborate and fancy then this is not the place for you. It's hard to find, rather small, and not all that impressive at face value - until you realize what this place is: a rescue. This is two people who have dedicated their lives to rectifying others mistakes. They rescue birds that others cannot care for and help to protect the few remaining specimens of dwindling species. This is not a zoo or an Audubon house - it's an act of compassion and mercy.

That being said, the birds are beautiful. Peaches, a cockatoo is BEAUTIFUL and vocal - and he'll sit on your arm and chat with you. The other birds are left in their cages for the day - for innumerable reasons they are not suited to handling. At night they take them into their home and care for them as if they are their children. It's definitely worth the visit.

For those who balk at the $10 entry price - realize that you're paying for the care and upkeep of these endangered birds and their home. Wouldn't you rather support that than some monstrous zoo with a questionable agenda?
