Description: Located at 301 Whitehead St., on the corner of Whitehead and Caroline, stands one of Key West's most impressive and historic buildings - Kelly's Caribbean. Well known for being the birthplace of Pan American World Airways, Pan-Am's first tickets were sold out of this very building in 1927. Pan Am was the principal and largest international air carriers in the United States from 1927 until its collapse on December 4, 1991. Founded in 1927 as a scheduled air mail and passenger service operating between Key West, Florida and Havana, Cuba, the airline became a major company credited with many innovations that shaped the international airline industry, including the widespread use of jet aircraft, jumbo jets and computerized reservation systems. Our Namesake - Kelly McGillis Kelly's was opened in 1992 by Fred Tillman and Actress, Kelly McGillis. We are proud to carry Kelly McGillis' name! Noted for her various movie roles - Top Gun, Witness, The Accused - Kelly now resides in North Carolina but she does keep a watchful eye on the Kelly's Caribbean. Should you stop on by Kelly's Caribbean...we do have her Top Gun Jacket in the "Crash Bar" area.

We happened upon Kelly's later in the day after lunch service and before dinner service. The staff was accommodating of our extended family. We were the only people in the courtyard although the bar was quite full. We had an amazing meal in the courtyard. It ended up being a great place for our kids to eat and take a break from our excursions in Key West. The conch chowder was spicy and filling. The ceviche was replete with seafood and key lime juice seemed to be the secret. The conch fritters were served with a watermelon chutney that was delightful. If you have non-adventurous eaters in your party, there are plenty of items to choose from as well such as pasta and salads. I enjoyed introducing my family to all of those dishes and they loved them too. Next time I hope to head back sans family and check out the bar menu.

Happy Hour margaritas are the best at $3.50. We also ate the conch fritters and fish spread, both of which were yummy. The bartenders not overly friendly but pleasant. Never did glimpse the owner, but no biggie. Only wish we could have eaten out on the beautiful patio and still gotten HH prices!

Upon our return to Key West, we were eager to get back to Kelly's for their usually-excellent happy hour. With half-priced appetizers and good deals on margaritas, well drinks, and their own draft beers, it's been a pleasant oasis compared to the generally high-priced offering around town.

After slogging through a downpour to get there, we found a couple of seats at the bar and were...(let's see..."greeted" would not apply here...) confronted by a tall, surly young man that wordlessly took our request for two Key West 'Ritas and two ice waters. He plopped the waters down and returned to the other side of the bar to presumably make our drinks. When he eventually brought the margaritas, I asked if I could run a tab and he snatched the credit card out of my hand and went to the register, again with no comment or response. Then, we figured out what may have been the problem... Evidently, we had interrupted his deep conversation with two young blonde tourist girls sitting right next to us shooting "selfies" with their smartphones, giggling, dancing about, and getting their flirt on with him.

We noticed that a couple of spots had opened up on the outside portion of the bar, so I asked his permission to move so as to not impede his progress with the young lovelies. He snapped "Yeah, just be sure to take that tab with ya.." Yes, sir. After our move, we were taken great care of by the wonderful Mary, who more than made up for his rude demeanor...and pulled this review up to "very good" from "poor". For appetizers, we tried the Jamaican Jerked Wings, which were excellent, as well as the Havana Shrimp. Mary poured some fine drinks for us and provided some very pleasant conversation along with another really nice couple that we met there.

When we head back to Kelly's we'll be sure to seek out Mary if she's there, or our buddy Ryan, who we met a couple of years ago at another Key West establishment. The food and drinks have always been good to great at Kelly's for us, but the service (or lack thereof) makes such a big difference in how one feels about the entire experience. Just a smile can go a long way....

Frozen drinks were not very good (frothy and watery). Conch fritters mostly dough. Crab cakes came out cold, and when we complained about it they rewarmed the same cakes and brought them back out - of course they were dry. Worst part was one person ended up in the Emergency Room the next day from a bacteria traced back to under-cooked chicken. Service was really slow and restaurant was not busy. It was a shame since I remember this to have been a great restaurant in the past.

They have great prices on their happy hour drinks and appetizers, including three microbrews that are awesome! Their appetizers are really good, with big portions as well. Sit in the A/C inside or on the deck outside.
