“It just keeps getting better.”
Reviewed March 18, 2013

Spring break weeks aren't the best time to visit Key West if, like us, you're more into the laid back "locals" lifestyle and cool, quirky people and great, life-affirming experiences the island affords. So to find an oasis like the Heron House Court - which doesn't allow spring breakers - is a pure joy. Not that it's not a pure joy otherwise. This is our 8th stay at the Heron House Court. It remains our favorite lodging experience in the entire world. I kid you not. Small, quaint, quiet, secluded, we'll attended and well appointed...you couldn't ask for more. But the heart and soul of HHC - for each of the 8 years we've been there - is Roman, the Court's Concierge. He makes you feel welcome, he handles everything and anything you throw at him from special requests to bike rentals to dinner reservations to theater tickets to simply making you feel so at home. To us, Roman is as much a part of our annual visits as the sun, sea and the sky. Other reviews here are critical of the quaintness and simplicity of the HHC lifestyle. But that's what we love about it. If you want room service and an on-premise gym and only English-speaking fellow guests and to be called "sir" and "Ma'am" or you'd rather have dinner at Margaritaville than Colombian Grace, well, you probably don't want to be staying at HHC. But I also have to ask why you bothered to come to Key West in the first place. At HHC, you can live like a local for a short while - and be accepted as same. You are within walking distance of Paseo (new Caribbean restaurant), the Old Town Bakery, Eaton Bikes, the Key West ferry, Finnegan's wake, the Armory (art center), Five Brothers, the Coffee Plantation, Blossoms, BOs fish wagon, Sarabeth's, Sunbeam Market, HelpYourself...you name it. Also, if you don't know any of these places, then re-read my last comment - why on earth are you in Key West? Roman can hook you up - and he really really cares! During our stay, a group of tourists from Europe ran into some scheduling issues when their travel agent accidentally cancelled their room reservations. Roman not only booked the rooms he could at the HHC, he also arranged for additional rooms at another hotel (during high-season/spring break no less), and PERSONALLY escorted the group not only over to the other hotel, but to a dinner rendezvous he had arranged so they could all meet at a central location before going to their respective hotels. What does he expect after such excitement - and a 14 hour work day? A smile and a thank you. He is a gem and the hub around which the entire HHC world revolves. There is nothing I'd change about the HHC. If you go there and don't like it, may I humbly suggest that there's something wrong with you? Truly...we're going back in August and again next April. And we wouldn't even think of staying anywhere else. It truly is our home away from home and, I say again, the single best lodging experience of my very extensive travel life.

Room Tip: We like the deluxe kings that open onto the patio with the hot tub...big, bright and beautiful...but...

The location of the Heron House Court is ideal, close enough to the action of Duval street but far enough away to relax at the end of a busy day. We stayed in prime season thus paying prime prices and for that, they need to seriously upgrade the breakfast offerings and fix some of the plumbing in the bathrooms. Our shower fixtures and bathroom faucet leaked like sieves.. On the plus side, in our many and varied travels, we have never encountered a concierge like Roman. Smiling, helpful, and extremely informative, he is the go-to guy for all local needs, from food to drink to entertainment. We would stay again but would be more attentive to the price we paid.

We stayed here for a week. The hotel is in a good location - close to Duval, etc. That is a plus. The breakfast is a bit weak- nothing special- bagels, cereal, hard boiled eggs- no fruit. The rooms are a bit dated and could use some renovation. Two A/Cs in the window as one was not working - all rusty- why not remove it? Headboard was loose so every time you tossed it banged the wall- I guess gave the neighboring rooms some ideas... The manager Roman was wonderful! All of his suggestions were spot on and made our stay so much more enjoyable. The place could be great if they would spend some money renovating. The staff outside of Roman are not friendly and never would smile or say hello to us- such a little thing that makes a big difference. If you are not too fussy and like the location it is a place that will work. One day there was no hot water, but they fixed it that day- an example of what I am saying about renovating.

Very peaceful retreat from the business of Key West. Hotel was quiet. Staff was very gracious and helpful. Very enjoyable and relaxing. wow, I'm using to having to be brief. The idea of having to be wordy is a strange concept....thankyou all for now, sincerely, Happy Traveler.

After reading Trip Adviser reports on this facility we had high expectations.
We also stayed in room 15 and the room was pretty good but the king size bed frame was loose so every movement makes the bed shake. The hot tub temperature would have been acceptable for a pool but not a hot tub. The breakfast was a real dissapointment as mentioned by others. We have stayed in other cities and enjoyed breakfasts with other guests as a way to start the day.
This could be a great place but improvements with breakfast, hot tub and swimming pool are needed. Other Key West competitors offer a 2 hour happy hour for the guests to mingle and share their experiences.Perhaps the Heron House Court could follow their lead.

Roman was great in helping us with everything. He set us up with bicycles and also offered us advice on everything we asked. Hotel is a good 10 minute walk from duval... 5 minute walk to the boat piers... Breakfast was simple: coffee, croissants, muffins, juice.... We just stayed in room... Don't expect a great pool to lounge around in... Next time I visit key west , I will attempt to stay closer to duval street... Overall I would recommend heron house court

It's a pity I can't justify the fifth star for this B&B, because our room (#15, a junior suite) was more than adequate with a comfortable king bed and a small living room adjacent. The staff (Roman) is very pleasant and offered good advice. Additionally, the location in the seaport area of upper Old Town is a big plus for us, somewhat removed from the schlock and din of Duval Street but close enough to walk to practically everything you may need or want.

So why not the fifth star? Very simply, they only offered a substandard continental breakfast. Considering we were paying about $300 per night, I would have expected some fruit choice -- any fruit, even a banana -- but there was none. The buffet instead was just loaded with boxed cereals, bagels, tired looking english muffins, etc. May be good for carbo loading, but precious few protein sources. No yogurt. No hard boiled eggs. I don't expect or want a cooked breakfast, but this was a serious disappointment. There were a lot of Europeans staying there when we were in early February, and I could only imagine what they must have thought given the usual continental breakfast spreads set out at practically every European lodging establishment, with cold meats, cheeses, hard boiled eggs, yogurt, fruit, etc. For $300/night, I thought we deserved better. But not to despair, there is an excellent bakery one block away -- Old Town Bakery -- and an excellent restaurant with good breakfast offerings also a block away -- Azur restaurant. So we ate very well in the mornings, but at additional cost.

I would stay here again, but would hope they would upgrade their breakfast offerings in the meantime.
