“Somewhere to put your luggage while you explore”
Reviewed September 20, 2013

We stopped by here as we needed somewhere to stay quickly as we had a trip booked. So we negotiated and they dropped the price by $20. The lady showed us the room first which was on the nicer side of basic. VERY clean and air con. I must say upon arrival the staff were extremley friendly.

Pros
- Very clean and tidy room
- Free parking even for3-4 hours after you check out
-Very friendly staff (at first)
- WE WERE TOLD free in room wifi
- WE WERE TOLD our stay included full hot breakfast

Cons
- The air con was extremely noisy
- No wifi in the room. We were told the wifi was in the room but a stronger signal in the porch. We couldnt get wifi at either. Once we checked out another member of staff told us we shouldn't have been sold wifi as you can only get this by the pool or reception. We weren't given any compensation for this. The lady who originally checked us in was there but literally hid as we were asking for some kind of a refund
- There was no hot breakfast just a few sorry muffins and a yoghurt. I bit into a lovely chocolate croissant (pan au chocolate) just to find out it was filled with PESTO! horrible! I have never heard of this before
- We stayed on ground floor which was extremely noisy from the room above. They weren't being out of order but just by walking around created really loud banging, especially up and down the stairs (I am not a light sleeper either)
- Bed sheets weren't very good quality very scratchy (and I've done a lot of travelling around hostels etc so for me to mention this, it must be bad)

So to wrap up a convenient stay but I would pay $20-$40 more and stay in a nicer hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for upstairs room and negotiate on price. Ask them to make the price cheaper as no in room Wifi.

Very expensive for what you get, have stayed in 5 star hotels before for less so was a bit shocked at our first room, it had no bedding / towels, smelt of damp, had dirt on the floors & was very dated.
We were given a different & slightly better room near the pool after complaining but it wasn't worth the money to be honest & you will feel like you have been ripped off if you stay here.
The staff are lazy & didn't clean our room one day, they just mooch around the place looking miserable, maybe that's the way it is in key west, to be honest the whole place is a dump anyway & if you stray from Duval st. for more than 100yds you probably will stand in a dog turd the size of a table leg sooner rather than later

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else

The location, staff, pool area and building are all great, our room which wasn't cheap IMHO was very small, the one with the sliding door in the travellers pictures section, had a very relaxing time, pool to ourselves during the day. Breakfast was nice and simple, unfortunately for this review, on this trip we stayed a many nicer places for less money but that's Key West in the summer I suppose, glad we went.

Room Tip: Get one of the rooms without a sliding door to the bathroom

Spent an awesome weekend in a Victorian style house with our own porch and couple of swing chairs facing the gorgeous Truman Ave. Just two blocks away from Duval Street everything is walking distance from the hotel. The front desk lady (I think her name was Lyanna) was extremely professional and was able to answer all of my questions. She even recommended a great restaurant (915). The breakfast is simple but home made and delicious. I highly recommend it!

We had never visited Key West and booked this hotel after reading reviews on tripadvisor. We weren't disappointed. The staff were all very friendly and helpful - checking in our homeward flight and printing boarding passes for us. The location is great, near the nightlife on Duval Street but not noisy at all. Our room had two double beds and a huge, antique fireplace which was stunning. The breakfast by the pool was perfect - muffins, croissants, etc all beautifully laid out. Only two very small 'complaints' - the aircon in our bedroom was very loud and woke me every time it 'revved up'. The place could also do with a little tlc maintenance here and there. Quirky is great, but some areas look a little 'tired'. A great place to stay though - don't be put off, we loved it.

There's only one person working in reception at any one time, so with 33 rooms (busy during our Summer visit), expect to wait a while every time you need something at reception. The hotel is luck to have the young Irish guy (Brian)? there most of the time, as he's extremely, helpful, patient and really goes the extra mile. But here's the rub: early checkout and breakfast times that are strictly enforced in a vacation destination like Key West. We have a little baby and were late arriving at the breakfast area a few minutes before the 10am cutoff to find the housekeepers taking everything away. It wouldn't have killed them to have kept a few cups of yoghurt, bagels and coffee out. When I asked them to just hang on, they kept putting things away and said if I wanted coffee I should go to reception (down the path and upstairs) to get it. These unsmiling and impatient Caribbean staff were clearly put out by having to wait a few minutes so we could grab a coffee. We were then reminded at 11:00 am that we should be out of our room so they could clean. Really? Elsewhere in the world, noon is considered standard checkout time and of the hundreds of hotels I've stayed in, no one is lurking outside your door when the clock strikes noon to urgently clean. There will always be earlier or later departing guests, so housekeeping checks with the desk as they go so they know what room is vacant.
We came to Key West to take it easy for a few days, but the inflexibility of housekeeping here was a put off.

This hotel is a under a local group Hospitality Management company and it totally feels like it. You can't manage people into being hospitable. You hire friendly people and give them ownership for guest satisfaction. It's more than just economy of scale.

The room needed some attention as well. The antique bed could have used a modern (less squeaky/lumpy) mattress. Want to plug in a couple of phones and tablets? Move the bedside table out (2 outlets) and another by the fireplace mantle. An existing power strip that was accessible without moving furniture/across the room would have been much easier. There was black fungus around the bathroom window (which doesn't open for ventilation) and the shower floor wasn't graded properly so water always pools there, compounding the damp mildewy smell.
For what it costs to stay here, the experience could have been a lot better. We ended up staying at the Sheraton the next nights.

Great location! Three short blocks from Duvall, one from 2 scooter shops, and secs. from 7 Fish restaurant...BUT you may experience a leak from the ceiling light fixture in bathroom that has been occurring so long, it corroded the fixture! OR you may get black dust on your feet from the dirty floors. I had to use a wear sandals around the room to keep my feet clean AFTER a shower!? OR you may have to squeeze you leg (I weigh 190 lbs) in between toilet and wall to use bathroom. OH, the bed looks like a King, but really its 2 full mattresses beneath!? Stay away from Room18 to avoid these conditions and request Room 31...trust me!
